Final Fantasy VII Remake is a multi-part series

I'm out until they release an all-in-one for a reasonable price.

Not paying $60 to play one disc of FF7, only to wait for 3 years to pay another $60 to play the second disc, etc.

It tends to happen when you're playing with nostalgia. Had Square made the announcement that FFXV would be episodic, I imagine people would've been more receptive and considered the many different ways that could manifest.

Instead, they're changing a game many people already love - and just want as-is, updated to modern graphics. So the reaction is naturally going to be vitriolic, as people already love FFVII - and are now convinced this project won't be the same.

It doesn't have to be "naturally". I love FFVII, played it so many times (ranks second behind VIII for me). Instead of fabricating a negative narrative in their minds, people could show some patience and wait to see what they actually mean.

So... sequels?

They can't be doing Telltale style episodes... can they?

HAHA.

In the thread yesterday people were like "who cares about the combat, FF7 is about the story", to which I replied "then maybe they'll make it episodic like a TellTale game for you."

And now we learn it's episodic.

"What will they cut?", we asked amongst ourselves, when the answer was "anything and everything."

What a farce.

Is this how games are going to go? Seasons and episodes like Netflix? More consumable bite-sized chunks? Would be an interesting business model if it somehow ensured more content/value and less buggy software.

I'd wait for more details.

But quite frankly I'd prefer to play disc 1 in 2017, disc-2 6-9 months later and so on instead of playing the full remake in late 2018.

Eh, I guess that had to happen. They have to sell something in the next 3 years. If they truly want to do all the story scenes and all the locations its a huge undertaking. Even something like the witcher 3 doesn't have that kind of variety and breadth of content.

I guess if episode 1 is the midgar section, episode 2 introduces the overworld and goes through junon, episode 3 goes through nibelheim, etc. As long as they are released on a yearly basis I could see them building on the base game this way.

I still think they should have just done really nice quality pre rendered backgrounds and really nice quality 3d models on top that blend perfectly like in resident evil for gamecube. It would have taken a lot less time than this and they could have focused on building good 3d battle scenes and just stuck with the original gameplay system.

Things I'm looking forward to finding out:

1. Will save data carry over between episodes? What about people who buy episode 3 but not 1 or 2?

2. Will we be able to go back with our later / completed save datas to earlier locations?

3. Will all episodes have to be released on PS4 before any of it comes to other systems?

4. Will the battle music be unchanged?

5. Will the world map still be there?

6. Will "episodes" be released physically or digital only at first, with perhaps all of the episodes released on one disc at the end?

7. How will limit breaks like Bahamut Zero or Super Nova work?

8. Will Advent Children costumes be unlockable?

I can actually see this turning out well. Hoping it doesn't completely make the entire series flop

I feel crazy but this seems like confirmation that it's more of a FFXIII, FFXIII-2, etc situation[/QUOTE]

I agree. It could possibly just be bulking out the original ffvii story we got.

I'm talking about recreating them.

You saw Midgar right?

That didn't look cheap at all.

Imagine how detailed the rest of the towns will look in comparison? Plus all the dungeons as well?

True I get what your saying. But midgar is one of if not the most complex areas in the game. Also people do realize they have a lot of ground work laid out for them ahead of time. They also have a lot of hi res work from AC they can use and or modify. Not saying it's going to be easy, but I do think a lot of the challenges will come else where.

It took less than 48 hours for SE to create a massive fan orgasm over the game and the proceed to crush all the hopes and dreams of the masses.

Wow.

It doesn't have to be "naturally". I love FFVII, played it so many times (ranks second behind VIII for me). Instead of fabricating a negative narrative in their minds, people could show some patience and wait to see what they actually mean.
...because SE has any shown so many times how "wrong" we are about them, so we should give them the benefit of the doubt? It sounds like SE fuckery alright.

Based on the WSJ Reporter's comments sounds more like FFVII-R is going to be treated like FFXIII this gen.

In other words...

FFVIIR-1
FFVIIR-2
FFVIIR-3

Each with additional content to expand those parts and flesh out things, maybe even stuff from the other FFVII games and Advent Children?..

Just heard the news.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAAH.....hack wheeze.........HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Oh man, I'll be giggling about this as I fall to sleep.

They know it's going to be huge, so they spread it out into multiple games. Then again, FF7 to this day is a game that's still loads more expansive and ambitious than a lot of JRPGs today, so a true remake is a bigger undertaking than people are giving it credit for being.

Squaresoft is so weird right now. I wouldn't be surprised if we never have the ability to play the full version of FF7 or FFXV ever. We probably WILL, but I wouldn't be SURPRISED if we never do. It feels like they are full of ideas but they have absolutely no idea how to execute them in a reasonable manner.

And they'll charge you $120-$180 for the whole experience, plus cosmetic DLC.
If it's 2-3 games worth of content, that's fine.

If it's not, then I'll wait for a sale. It's no different than any other game. If it's not worth the time or money, I won't buy it.

I feel like episodic games mostly succeed on story.

They're probably less impactful when, you know, everyone knows the story.

i mean, the game's 20 years old soon, which means teenagers who still play console games probably never checked it out, so it could still surprise them like when kids today discover that darth vader is luke skywalker's father.

or not, since big revelations in games and cinematics are pretty commonplace these days.

People:

OPTION 1:
"Here is a remake , same scale as the original, just remade in HD but everything is pretty much the same, same cameras etc."

- WTF NOOOO I wanted a remake, not a remaster ! Give me a full 2015 version of the game, with the world and everything, but with modern gameplay and everything.

OPTION 2:
" Here is a Full remake of the game with new 2015 standard, better and improved gameplay, new mechanics etc; Since the game is so big, we'll split it up in episodes "

- WTF NOOOO I just want the game from 20 years ago but prettier on 1 fucking disc, is that so much to ask? Squareenix Sucks !!!"

OPTION 3:

Square Enix announces that the remake is cancelled because they read a Neogaf thread and feared for their lives.

So I assume so that they can do stuff like,

"Hey, let's throw them episode 1 at 2016!"

And then "Episode 2 at 2017!". "Episode 3 at 2018!". "Episode 3 at 2019!"

Basically trying to lessen the burden instead of "Here, the full game at 2017!" so they can sort of do this at a sideline project while also making other games.

...This doesn't exactly inspire confidence, however.

Could be, I feel like are people are just having knee jerk reactions though, we don't really know what they mean by this. You're name & member tag are 👌

Remaking it was probably always a bad idea. Games should be designed for the platform they're on... Forcing a game with PS1 level of content into PS4 level of quality just isn't sensible.

Yuuup.

Some of you are such whiny asses, it's god damn annoying. Episodic storytelling is not inherently bad, so stop treating this announcement as if the well-awaited remake is already doomed. Wait until the fucking game is out. Or at least until several months before release to get an idea of how the game is shaping up.

Fucking hell.

It's not inherently bad, but forcing FF7 into an episodic structure is sticking a round peg into a square whole.

Can you imagine Dragon Age Origins forcing you to play Redcliffe/Circle of Magi/Dalish Elves/Dwarves of Orzammar in a set order?

Or Skyrim giving you side quests that have to be resolved before certain plot points or else they vanish?

The game structure does not support the gameplay.

You know, this makes sense of why everything shown was from the very beginning of FF7.

Honestly at this point I just don't care. I know I am buying them all. And I will also buy the collection on a blue ray once it's released too and keep it sealed for collection purposes . I want this game and if it means I can play the first part next year then so be it.

I wish they would have waited longer before saying this :(
At least not immediately after they get everyone hyped...

Or they could have used multiple disks.

Man, fuck this thread. There is no point in trying to talk sense to some of you. People are just finding excuses to be disappointed without seeing how the final game will be, let alone what episodic content actually refers to.

Good thing this game is a remake and not the same as your original playthrough of FFVII. It can be made to work.
