Is there anything more hilarious in retrospect than Yugioh? (Besides Yamcha)

Why didn't Yugi just call the police when Kaiba stole the Blue Eyes White Dragon and injured his Grandpa?

He got away with way worse stuff in that arc in the manga. The anime cut out the cast having to ascend the entire tower, which was a gauntlet of deathtraps disguised as amusement park attractions. A roller coaster ride where they were strapped to electric chairs that would activate if they made a sound, "laser" tag with professional assassins, and a haunted house a genuine chainsaw-wielding serial killer. The entire secondary cast was along for all of this too. All of this so that Kaiba could challenge Yugi to a card game. Of course, it was revenge for their previous encounter where Yami-Yugi trapped Kaiba in a horrible nightmare of being eaten by duel monsters that left him with serious mental scars. He created the hologram system just to replicate that effect on Yugi and give him a taste of his own medicine.

The manga was messed up.

Detective Conan is ridiculous because they have the framing device for why they keep solving murders built in to the Detective Mouri character and instead they just keep having the cast just stumble upon murders happening around them at which point "oh well good thing we have a detective (or two) handy". Like jesus, they could make a fortune charging people to stay away from them since everyone they visit ends up dead

I bet if confronted, the author would just say it's an homage to Murder She Wrote or something. They're both absolutely ridiculous for having a murder that just happens to occur when the protagonist is around.

This being the end goal is absolutely amazing.

I still find the Weevil part early on hilarious. The guy knows he can't beat yugi, so his strategy is to just take his cards and throw them off the boat. Complete savage.
That's kind of like what kids at school used to do except instead of doing it as a strategy to beat me in a card game they were just doing it to be dicks

Ain't seen nothing yet, Yusei vs Dark Glass (anatagonist/friend) involves duel on motorcycles around the sun. Dark-Glass shows how to go beyond a accel synchro, (which literally driving into warp space and coming out the space rift you enter with a new monster), by doing a delta accel sync causing the nearby star to Supernova, (accompanied by the protagonist scream). It turns into a black hole and both race to escape the event horizon, the loser gets sucked in and dies.

The show literally stopped giving a fuck and went balls to wall awesome, crazy. Loved 5D's for that pure entertainment

I'm amazed 4Kids left in the plot point about the middle aged dead guy possessing the body of a teenage girl.

Also, Yami/Atem's English dub voice actor started out doing Hentai dubs when those were still a thing.
Don't ask me how I know that. I just do.
Infact I'm sure I saw a YouTube video where someone put his Hentai lines over Yu-Gi-Oh scenes.

So to this day Chaotic is the only show that featured cardgames that didn't have serious business in them.
Because instead the focus is in the lore of the cards being real.

Kaiba was awesome though it beats every anti hero to date. The guy is a pure douche bag even in the jap og translation.

I dunno, he reminds me of "that" character, the one who talks big but never actually has beaten the main character

"Never said I wasn't a hypocrite."
I gave up on Yughioh pretty early on. In the anime it always seemed like there was a new rule or card to deux ex the main characters out of any problem.

"I just drew the 'eff you' card which means all your monsters can go eff themselves, and I take 10000 away from your life points. You didn't see that coming did you? It's because I'm a card master."

Personally enjoyed Jack Atlas he was a more successful and ham Kaiba ( at least initially, before he mellowed) beats the Protagonist before the story starts when their both orphans who live in squalor, steals his bike and favourite card, drives off to become a duelling super star while his friends continue to live in abject poverty. Pronounces himself King. Yusei was of course pissed.

This is actually addressed at the end of story (anime version) where you discover Yami Yugi's puzzle's ability is to draw whatever card in the deck he wants, Basically he actually cheats in-universe, as in straight up cheating.

Since we're on the subject, of Yu-gi-oh, I always wondered, by the time the lead cast went to the island (this was the first season), were none of Yugi's friends aware of his alter ego? I remember watching the dub and while I don't remember exactly who Yugi was dueling, they were pretty far in, and Yugi transformed into Dark Yugi multiple times already in front of his friends, and the the girl suddenly notices that Yugi acts differently and is taller some times. I wasn't sure if it was a dumb dub mistake or what.

Also, the manga is infinitely better than what we got in the anime (either dub or the original). When did it turn into a shitty card game?

If I'm remembering right, they found out about his alter ego in an episode where Bakura traps their souls inside their favourite cards, and Yami takes over Yugi's soulless body to duel him.

Maybe it's just a 4kids thing but it was always super weird how until that point nobody made a big deal about it

The sheer fact that this was a world that took a card game this seriously is hilarious to me. They had a fucking school dedicated to teaching people how to play a card game. Even the Egyptians were in on this shit. The only thing funnier in retrospect imho is Yamcha

Pretty sure there are colleges that provide scholarships for MOBAs now.

What always made me laugh when I got older was the fact that (in the anime at least) Kaiba seems to notice the change during the first duel...but no one else does.

Long before the abridged came out I always pictured Kaiba just standing there dumbfounded and wondering how Yugi could just hit puberty on command.

Always suprised Chaotic didn't take off. It's also one the very few shows that I saw go from Flash animation to traditional.

I never watched the show, but I remember watching commercials and I always found the main character's best friend grating. He just sounds annoying. Yug this, Yug that, etc...blech.

as someone who read atleast 8-9 chapters of the manga before the anime aired here in germany, i tought the anime was a joke.
also, i already played mtg, so the cardgame was boring for me.

In the manga he didn't get any taller, his voice didn't transform, in general he didnt change that much physically. He just got silently possessed which caused him to hold himself differently and stand up straighter, have a more confident look in his eyes, and speak with more authority. The "change" did get exaggerated over time though to make them look more different from each other. At the beginning they looked basically identical except that one looked totally maniacal.

The japanese anime followed a little more closely to this but modeled itself after the later more chill Pharaoh. Usually the puzzle would very briefly glow with a soft "ding" sound and suddenly Atem would be in the house.

However the english dub consistently edited in the big transformation sequence to make it more exciting and gave him a deep ass voice, which makes it puzzling why nobody seems to notice right away. A guy just went fucking super saiyan and Anzu is all like "oh that's ever so slightly peculiar." Meanwhile Kaiba is standing around wondering "Why the fuck is nobody seeing what I'm seeing?!" No wonder he had an even larger stick up his ass in the dub.

I believe the manga didn't go full card game until volume 8. That's where Duelist Kingdom starts, which is where the anime picked up. Then it's all card game up until volume 32 where it backs off from it a bit and goes to Egypt for the final few volumes. Pre-8 and post-31 are actually my favorite parts of the manga though I do enjoy later Battle City as well.

This makes me want to read the manga again. Dark Yugi running around making people experience their own personal hell until they go insane. Good times.

I had no idea that the transformation sequence was edited in the English dub. This is "Shadow Realm is actually Hell" levels of mind-blowing.
