With less than two weeks until its release, “The Force Awakens” is tracking to debut with an opening weekend gross between $170 and $220 million domestically.

How in the hell did both Avatar and Jurassic World make so much money in the BO?

Not a question about film quality- but were people really seeing these movies multiple times in the theater or something?

Didn't Avatar have 2 runs in theaters? That being said, if any franchise has a shot at beating Avatar, it's Star Wars.

Domestic I can see, possibly. Still a pretty big hill to climb. Avatar got there by selling out a month AFTER it was released. Everyone will see SW within the first month.

WW lol nah

It wouldn't be impossible. As stated earlier, Star Wars is one of the biggest IPs in the world. If Episode VII get a 2nd run in theaters, it might have a shot.

If its good, I think its going to shatter the weekend record. You'll get people who saw it thurs/friday seeing it again sat or sunday.

I think it can break the domestic, its basically uncontested until March with BvS.

Jurassic World was about the nostalgia. Many went because of the memories of the original and wanted to bring their kids so it could be experienced. It's a great movie in that respect.

Weather here on the east coast has been amazing. 40s and sometimes mid 50s! This is freaky winter weather.

So doesn't look like a storm is coming like what happened with Avatar.

Pretty consistent 50 degree weather in Boston... its been a warmer winter than the spring.

Wide audience appeal + 3d ticket prices. Also, both movies are well received by critics and audience.

This. And I'm sure Disney won't let J.J. Abrams live to tell the tale if The Force Awakens ends up sucking.

yeah, that's definitely true. No other franchise could hope to reach these numbers
Exactly. Much like how you guys underestimated Ant-Man & Guardians, you all are underestimating Star Wars reach as a franchise. While it's far from a guarantee, TFA has a shot at being Avatar worldwide.

I was joking. Even if it snows, people are ready to die on the road for this movie. I am anyway.

when is the film being screened for reviews?

Is the movie even screened for reviews? I've heard a lot of contradicting news on it.

Box office isn't about deserving though
Correct.

How accurate are these projections? I've never seen them for other films before.
Projections are fairly accurate except for few exceptions, some films tend to blow up (like Jurassic World, Avengers etc.). TFA also fits that nostalgia, buzz crowd so these numbers could also be way off.

Yes for Avatar. There wasn't as much repeat audience for JW.

Yes, Titanic also had a multiple run which significantly added to it's total.

I just got confirmation at work that Disney is limiting the amount of prints being release for the opening week. Probably to drive 3D ticket sales to increase their opening weekend gross. My theatre is running a 25/75 split on 3D shows meaning if we get 4 prints for opening weekend only 4 show times will be 2d and the remaining 12 will be 3D

I predicted 700M, so this isn't too far off. Phantom Menace made 474M back when tickets were cheaper and there were no IMAX/3D screenings to drive up prices even further (except the 3D run a few years ago, which did terribly).

You guys are putting way too much stock in multiple runs.

Those are for a final push to hit a milestone really.

So if it ends at 690 work out another run to push it to 705ish. Numbers out my ass of course.

Same thing happened with TDK and a few other movies here and there.

When Avatar released the Euro was worth 1.46 USD. Right now it is worth 1.09 USD. The GBP was 1.63 USD, right now it is worth 1.54. The AUD was .93 USD now it is .71. The CAD was .95 USD, now it is .73. The Russian Ruble was .3 USD now its .15 USD. Just about everything is down against the dollar, some currencies substantially, since Avatar was released.

The point is that even if SW somehow matched Avatar gross's or surpassed it, it would still bring in substantially less gross in $USD.

I think if you don't have your tickets bought by now you aren't seeing it opening weekend. Certainly not twice. There is a finite limit on screen availability.
