Cruz soars past Trump in Iowa

I think Cruz will say/do anything for power and is pandering to the extreme right because it will get him into office.

If it benefited him, he would argue that water isn't wet.

No way, dude is the worst of the 3. He would do best in a general and is basically a super churchy version of trump who hates gays more and is in the pocket of corporations.

Only good thing about him is that even republicans in congress hate him. He is apparently insuferable.

The way I look at it is this: if I believe he is a right-wing, religious zealot, then I think he believes the shit he says. Otherwise, the alternative is that he is actually a moderate or maybe even a secret left winger saying shit for potential votes, and that doesn't strike me as likely.

I think he's a right-wing religious asshole, I just don't think he's actually going to "see whether sand glows in the dark." I'm sure he wants to get rid of Obamacare because he wants the government to exist for the sake of corporations and corrupt politicians, but I don't think he actually believes that "nothing is killing jobs or hurting the American economy more than Obamacare."

He was on Harvard Law Review, which means top of the class at one of the best law schools in the country. He has some modicum of intelligence, yet he is a godawful person and a complete corporate shill. He comes off like a slimy televangelist, I can't stand the guy. I don't understand how he appeals to anyone.
 
Ted Cruz is such an enigma to me, I can't quite pin him down. He's completely crazy, but he's fully aware he's a nutjob. He's like a young teenager going through a phase who thinks it's "cute" to root for thinly-veiled evil activities, like an MNC that got caught screwing over a developing country.
 
It is amazing how much animosity one guy can stir up inside of me without even saying a single word. If there ever was a contest for the most punchable face in the world he would definitely be the frontrunner. I really hope that none of these republican clowns are able to get anywhere close the presidency. I know a lot of people say that that will never happen but...

Gotcha. Well I can roll with that that, although even then it would be the case that he's not that far off from those statements. I can totally see Cruz drumming up a full-scale war in the ME or ending "Obamacare."
 
Not sure who would be worse from this country, Trump or Cruz. I think Donald is a bigot whereas I think Cruz is downright sinister. Dude is a Slytherin if ever there was one.

Yep, he's smart. I think Scalia is a good comparison. Extremely smart but willing to bend himself over backward to make some asinine position seem logical.

i rather have Trump as President than Cruz, Jeb!, Rubio. Trump is a fake Republican which makes him less scary while Rubio wants to restart a Cold War with his 1984 Reagan erection. Jeb wants to prove that he is better than his brother and will bring endless wars to fulfill the Bush profecy while holding hands with the Sauds
 
Laying low? There is like some disgusting bromance going on. He likes Donald. If Cruz were somehow to win, Trump would be in his cabinet or a supreme court justice? Would be just as bad as a Trump Presidency.

I hope this Tuesday's debate, Trump gets eaten alive. Its time he goes away.

Well he was responsible for the government shutdown in 2013. So, yes. He is unelectable. Just for the record, that is not the only reason he will not win the general. Shutting down the government is the top of a long list of negatives that will hurt him with independents.
 
Iowa is the only state Trump isn't leading in. He leads in every other state and all the national polls. I don't think he is worried
 
Cruz is less electable than Trump, if anything. Establishment GOP people just like him a little more. Independents will like trump more.
 
Cruz obviously believes most of what he says on some level. But he also definitely plays up the firebrand image to sell himself to those he's trying to appeal toward.

The guy initially wanted to be an actor before he decided to ultimately go to college, and it shows in how he carries himself.
 
Well, Iowa hasn't exactly been stellar at picking the winner on the GOP side. Huckabee won huge in 2008 and Santorum won in 2012.

I'm very aware that he's got no appeal, but many Republican funders believe his ethnicity is enough.
 
I would assume a shift of this magnitude would be an outlier, unless other polls starts to corroborate it. I mean, wasn't Trump's Muslim bashing only helping him with the base?
 
Trump actually did worse in this poll a month ago. He gained 2%. He was getting clobbered by Carson in their last poll. Now Cruz seems to be the evangelicals choice.

Iowa is a weird state, Evangelicals rule the right. They don't see Trump as a true believer because he isn't.
 
Does the Republican Party only appeal to the stereotypical religious and bigoted? Shouldn't there be some fiscal conservative people in the party who aren't into all this other junk?

Do they just not vote in these polls?

The "fiscal conservatives" are a handful of wealthy billionaires on the East Coast. They don't represent an actual voting constituency, they just fund the circus.

Alright, c'mon, let's live in reality here: Cruz is extremely intelligent, and he's an excellent politician. Cruz is so much more dangerous than Trump... it's not even on the same level.

Not only that but since '88,Iowa only went Red in the general for Bush's reelection. Is there any reason to think Iowa matters this year in a way it hasn't in recent memory?
