Gibb seems to be coming at it from the standpoint that plotting is pretty important (which isn't necessarily wrong, but...) Most of his negative-ish reactions stem from the fact he recognizes similar scenarios in past movies, period. He doesn't really elaborate on whether the new versions of those scenarios are done very well.

Seems to be the case with Faraci, too, but I'm sure he'll explain himself VERY thoroughly (expect like, a 3500 word review, I'd imagine) on that front tomorrow morning.

Yeah, I've always been a part of the school of thought that plot is close to the bottom of the list when it comes to scripting priorities. Characters and emotions reign above all else, and as long as there's nothing so egregious in the plot that it draws me out of the film during the viewing experience, I won't really care what aspects of the film people are picking apart afterwards. The plot of the OT is haphazzard as hell, but it all works, if this is the same situation than it won't matter at all to me.

Unless Faraci was being sarcastic, he said he loved General Leia Organa or something so...yay? I mean I think she'll probably be cool and a decent performance. Not sure if she gets a standout moment.
 
I suppose it's a no brainier that we are going to get a book (or a bunch of books) about Kylo's training with Luke.

I also wonder if Marvel is going to do an ongoing post Force Awakens comic the same way they did comics between the movies in the OT.

Coming off the heels of the PT I cant see how anyone can be this negative towards a film. Its the jump off of a new trilogy. Why do people have to be so critical. Can they not tell JJ handled it with white gloves and a lot of love. What is wrong with everyone.

It seems weird that from the general impressions everyone seems pretty positive minus Devin.

I'd be curious to know more. Like he is answering questions, and he went to the premiere. Just would love to know if his expectations were different, or just isn't blinding by the "O.M.G. New Star Wars!!"

I mean, I am obviously going to see it and will decide then.
 
So, tomorrow the deluge of reviews and unfairly criticizing or threatening any negative word about the film begins.

And then Friday morning GAF becomes a blood bath talking about the box office.

I think Luke's absence will be something that fan's criticize, but I would be surprised to see it complained about in any actual critic's review. (Because stuff like that doesn't actually matter.)

People will always be critical, mostly because they love something not because they just want to be negative

Because being better than the PT isn't the bar people set for this, it's being as good as the OT. And even though JJ probably tried his best, people might disagree with the overall direction, that is how callbacks are handled and how well the new characters are established. You can have the right formula but the wrong execution.

Agreed.

I think that's why Gibb's critique has problems. He seems to suggest that the quest to find Luke isn't fulfilled in a satisfying manner because they don't find him until the very end.

I don't see why that would be an issue.

If you're gonna give me new characters give me a reason to follow them. This movie only does that for Rey. And she basically WoW quests Luke's saber to him. The movie ends with her holding it out like he's gonna give her a mission reward robe with bitchin flames on it.

Retread of ANH, complete with a new 'Death Star'.

I don't mind Luke not being in it.

Like, if everything goes down as describes it's a perfectly logical reason as to why he disappeared.

But, I know that will not be good enough for some.

I agree, for example, I would have loved this move to be more Luke focused, but what can we do. They have some sort of plan. I am just happy that we are getting more movies, and that there seems to be an urgency to fix a lot of sour shit.

A New Hope was a fetch quest. The plot of a Star Wars movie should ideally be simple.

Clearly the FOrce leads R2-D2 to stumble into him and begin his ascension blah blah blah garbage.
 
As someone who only has a modest interest in the whole SW fiction, I enjoy reading through these reviews and reactions. Finn and Phasma stuff sounds like a bummer though, I like those two actors.

I can't believe people are knocking films using video game terminology like it's applicable at all.

Lots of fiction has the protagonist tasked with delivering something.
 
People use the frame of reference they're most familiar with.

Although I think it's then fair to infer their knowledge of storytelling might be a bit handicapped due to that.

I dislike everything JJ. The writing is always bad (opinion). I'm sure he will make the film a visual delight, but I had hoped that Kasdan co-writing would offset JJ's bad writing and plot direction. Directors usually have a lot of input in script revision though...
