[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens - It's True. All of it.

ANH came out almost 40 years ago. I have no problem with it borrowing from it. There is always going to be a dilemma of how you create drastically different stories in this same universe while keeping the feel of Star Wars AND introduce a bunch of new characters.

I expect some crazier stuff from Rian and Colin.

The fact that is 40 years old doesn't work as an excuse when the movie is one if not the most popular film ever made with tons of re releases and special editions.

It's still very fresh in everyones minds, even some young kids

I love the beginning of a new chapter with new characters.

Looking forward to it.

It's just not our Star Wars anymore, it's the Star Wars for everyone,so they kinda restart it a bit.

I think it's for both. Which is why we have the call backs and similar feel to ANH. But you're right. They also have to bring in a new generation to Star Wars which makes sense when people say you don't even need to watch the OT to understand what's going on in this movie.

I just assumed his armor tanked the shot although I think the EU says he used Force Absorb or some nonsense.

If it was armor then why didn't he just let them hit him wherever?

Which,honestly,I am perfectly fine with.

The prequels don't matter for these next three movies and the OT...well...let's be totally honest here, yes they are good and fun films but they are also OLD.
Releasing 3 movies or even just this one movie that build on having watched movies that are between 30-40 years old...you just don't do that.

Keep the links to the past in there for the old fans, but reset the stage for the new generation so they can experience their own "OT".

Dude it's fucking Star Wars. Everyone and their mothers have seen the OT.

Notsomuch in the film.

Ren is backed up by stormtroopers a few times, but otherwise he's flying solo. There is no mass of knights following him around.

My GF hasn't seen any of them. OT or PT. :P

The Force Awakens is a little more fun/funny than Star Trek, but it doesn't manage to hit the emotional beats as well.

Also, I'd say the callsheets/spoilerboard stuff is actually closer to 70-75% percent rather than 90.

My review (and my feature piece) should be up in the morning.

Honestly I don't think it's a problem that this movie borrows a lot from A New Hope. The current generation has ANH of their own now. Maybe if you're like super invested in the movies, it feels like a retread but there are countless others who are being introduced to Star Wars for the first time.

Basically it's only a negative if you're nostalgic about the older movies. IMO at least

I am not super invested in the OT, and the retread talks has me disappointed. I am not super picky with SW, so I was hoping to see new stories, new adventures. Something different. I'm sure it will still be fun, but as someone that even enjoyed the prequels, I was hoping for this new trilogy to be fresh.

I think I've only known two people who haven't seen any of the movies, and both were immigrants. One of them has only seen about 15-20 movies in his life and he's 39.

Probably not the precise answer you're looking for:

1) Star Trek
2) The Force Awakens

3) Mission: Impossible III
4) Into Darkness

5) Super 8

Good, good.
My expectations are set lower than that.

I don't think a few anecdotal "my friend/spouse/whatever" proves that a retread is warranted. We're talking about one of the most recognizable, watched and merchandized franchises ever.

Sure they have, but after the prequels I'm sure majority of fans want something familiar. It's catering to the old while introducing to the new

I understand wanting something familiar but there is also treading water too. Into Darkness got trapped into the void of trying to rehash Wrath of Khan instead of doing its own thing.

Again I'll wait until I see the movie for myself but this isn't really an issue for me honestly. I guess it just comes down to the person.

But in general I feel most people will come out satisfied, have had a fun and have a good overall impression of the movie and I've said this from the get go. That's all this movie needed to do as it'll set up people for the next movie where they can go in any direction they want.

EDIT: Does it have that weird same sense of non-logic in order to have "fun"? How does that "Han looks for the Falcon for years, Rey finds it, flees, gets picked up by Han" stuff work in the movie? Is it coincidence central?

The Force Awakens is a little more fun/funny than Star Trek, but it doesn't manage to hit the emotional beats as well.

I was never a hardcore trekkie, I really liked TNG as a kid, and I never got seriously in those ST vs. SW debates, but if I had to choose, I would have chosen Star Wars.
now the 2009 reboot was good, i honestly enjoyed it, but I don't feel the need to ever see it again. funny enough, I felt it was cold and emotionless, but that's what star trek always was to me, more scientific. and the moment JJ Abramwas was revealed to be the director of episode 7, I immediately thought about star trek, of course, and my expectation has always been that episode 7 would be like that reboot, only a lot better, only star wars, with lightsabers, the force, more emotions, warmer.
so episode 7 being not only worse but colder than star trek? that would be bad, on the other side I feel for me personally, it's next to impossible that it could be colder than star trek, but I'll see on thursday.

But did it delight?

Jurassic World was bad. They only picked him because that movie somehow made too much money. lol

That's like hiring someone as a financial advisor because they won the lotto. Just look at those returns!

Of course Bobby can elaborate, but I don't really interpret "more fun/funny" as "colder".

How are people seeing the movie already? I thought it was just the premiere yesterday and then the 16th for France, Italy, Sweden etc., then officially on the eve of the 17th in the U.S.

Was gonna call BS on Bobby but Amy and Bryan also saying they've seen it, so I have to believe them.

Was this a surprise screening? Most of you Full of Sith dudes were excited to watch it on the 17th or 18th, so I imagine this was unexpected.

Congrats in either case.

The fact that you have it below Star Trek is a major bummer though.

Bobby is press.

the other sentence was about star trek hitting the emotional beats better.
the "cold" comes from me, that's what I feel when I think about the star trek reboot. more scientific, less emotional.

It felt more like Lucas was making the prequels for himself. Which is also a bad thing.

Well I think the issue was more that he hadn't been making films constantly between the PT and the OT moreso than making the films for himself. He was totally out of touch with a lot of elements that made the originals so likable and just general storytelling.

Yeah you can definitely tell Lucas was rusty when it came to the prequels. His skills atrophied over that fifteen year break.

Filmmaking/writing/directing is like a muscle; you've got to keep working it out.

5) Super 8

I'm curious what you're thoughts on Super 8 were to put it at that position. Your ranking is actually the same as mine, minus The Force Awakens, since I haven't seen it:

1) Star Trek
2) Mission Impossible III (I really like that movie, Philip Seymour Hoffman elevates it by being a genuinely terrifying antagonist)
3) Into Darkness
4) Super 8

With that said, I think all of his movies are entertaining, well crafted and executed films, that do a great job of invoking the era/style/tone of the films he clearly is inspired by. There are genuine shit tier movies (ie, the Transformers movies, most of Zack Snyder's work not Watchmen, and even 300). I just don't think Abrams falls into "shit tier" or even "garbage" tier when it comes to his movies/shows. He's good at what he does. His crew also have a great eye for telling stories as well.

What I'm wondering is if there's another trench run, because yes we did see the "Death Star" and a trench in the trailers, but from what the spoilers told us;
Han/Chewie set charges and blow up the base... (or do they blow up the shields so that they can destroy the Death Star III via another trench run?)

What you probably think is a trench run in the trailers isn't a trench run.

Working for Trump!

Yeah. If he'd put his dad's money in an index fund he'd be 3.5X richer than he is now, but he's such an amazing businessman!
