[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens - It's True. All of it.

Almost as if it's the first movie in a new trilogy. Of course questions are drawn out over several films. They should be

Stuckman's review said it well. Essentially, if you left the movie wanting more, then the ending and film did its job as a first movie in a new saga

But ANH didn't... It closed out the story while the possibility of a sequel was there if it needed one. It was a standalone movie. This one is more like the recent trends of movies saga that feel incomplete because you need to watch all the movies in the story to know what's going on.

it was all pretty much as expected. stirring moments but i knew disney would never okay a star wars film that either challenged its audience or expected them to be patient enough to take in a bit of world building.

it sort of reminded me of the problems you get in video game writing where you have these particular set pieces the designers have already cooked up and it's your job to string them together.

adam driver is the perfect prequel anakin/vader. not sure if that's a good or bad thing but the film was raised whenever he was on screen. boyega was decent but should've kept his south london accent from attack the block. sad to see han go but he had those post 2000 harrison ford eyes that make you think he was never all there anyway.

the love that went into some of the puppets was probably the highlight of the whole film. could've spent a lot more time on not tatooine just drinking it in.

A New Hope is really the only Star Wars film like that, and that's because they weren't sure if it'd be a standalone movie or not. Empire Strikes back famously ends with the reveal that
Vader is Luke's dad
and Han ends up getting taken by Boba Fett. That's a way bigger hook. Then the prequels are all building up to Anakin becoming Vader and that only happens in Sith.

I also stand by the idea that this isn't just a Star Wars remake, it's an OT remake in one film.

Granted, the similarities between Star Wars and Jedi might make it seem more like it's a Star Wars remake, but it really does seem to go like

Opening: Star Wars' open.
Middle: Empire Strikes Back's middle
End: Return of the Jedi's ending.

there's probably a nice fine New Hope frost over the whole layer cake, yeah, but it really did feel to me like it was more or less the greatest hits of the OT entire, in order.

Bobby Roberts can you link to your review?

Yeah, sure. Here's the feature I did about all the things anyone needs to know to watch Star Wars (spoilers: Nothing. You don't need to know SHIT about Star Wars to like this movie), and here's the review. It was for print, so it's only 300 words. Pretty basic.

I don't think for a second Finn will be force sensitive, and never thought that going in anyway. I was sure Rey would be a Skywalker, but I think there's enough wiggle room to allow her to be someone else, say a Kenobi. I do think though, that there's a suppression of her heritage in the character, and the awakening is very literal in her case. She's turning over bits of the puzzle throughout the film, and whilst the final scene was a bit awkward, it felt like she was committing herself to Luke as a student of something she already knows.

I think Finn is force sensitive. This is because of the initial scene where Kylo Ren stops and looks at him. If Finn wasnt sensitive, why would he stop Kylo in his tracks?

Maybe he just sensed fear from a nearby trooper?

I do think that it's possible NOBODY thinks he's Force Sensitive, and he basically WILLS himself through hard ass work to tap into the Force.

Or maybe he just proves to anyone paying attention that he doesn't even need that shit to be a hero.

Lotta ways Finn could go in the next two movies.

The fact Rian Johnson is taking him there has me REAL excited.

Going on the theory that Finn isn't force sensitive , his sudden defection makes no sense. He's been brainwashed since childhood. (birth?)
I was guessing before that maybe he had a Force-fueled super-empathetic reaction to atrocities near the beginning and that was what snapped him out of it.

He made a miraculous proton torpedo shot without a targeting computer in seemingly his first time flying an X Wing.

People who are force sensitive have better reflexes.

They showed Luke's personal aircraft parked in his family's garage.

I won't give a half asked review of episode 7 as it's nearly 4am and I'm shattered.

What I will do is predict stuff for episode 8.
I think Rey and Kylo Renn are brother and sister (because of the leia hug) and I think luke will train Rey to become a jedi.

That being said, I also think he is actually the man behind the Snoak hologram and will also train Kylo.

I think he'll make them fight and pick the best as his apprentice as a new sith Lord. I'm so convinced luke will turn out to be a baddie it's unbelievable.

I would like that to happen. But it wont. No way are they changing Luke to being on the dark side.

Because Finn was the only one that wasn't doing his job.... Which by the way was another aspect of the movie that asked for explanation. For 5 movies now we've seen Storm Troopers as more or less mindless shooting dummies. Now one of them just turns good for.... reasons.

Really enjoyed it.

Stand out moments for me were the millennium falcon reveal scene, Han's whole death scene and the ending fight with Rey.

Only negative for me was the lack of Phasma.

Also did Han call him Ben or Ren on the bridge?

Maybe Ben was his birth name but Kylo Ren is his evil name?

Wherever Kylo goes, everyone would be fearful of him.

I think he stops because the reason why Finn doesent kill the peasants is because the light side in him doesnt allow him to.

It might be the tinniest bit of light side in him, but it sort of explains why he doesnt kill the people and also explains why Kylo stops to look at him. Its not just a look either, because he obviously check to see who exactly this guy is.

But yeah, out of all the new characters, Finn has the most open story for the next two films.

You know Rey and Kylo are going to be trained up and max up their skills. Poe will continue to be a pilot for he resistance. But you dont know what Finn is going to do.

He turns good because he is force sensitive, thats my take on it.

Maybe he senses the light side in him and that's what initially tempts Kylo to the light?

Yeah, I definitely think he does sense the light side in him.

Wherever Kylo goes, everyone would be fearful of him.

Not everyone is stopped dead on the field of battle staring at the motherfucker for 10 seconds, either.

I mean, that's kind of noticeable.

I'm not saying it's not a possibility. It could be the sort of thing Johnson also notices and decides to turn it into what you're saying. It's an open door, definitely, and it makes perfect sense that you'd spot that moment and take it in that direction. I can see it.

But it could also simply be that a short, fairly freaked out Stormtrooper got caught staring at the baddest bad guy in a 10 mile radius, and Kylo made note of that.

It happens. People escape religious cults despite being indoctrinated from birth. And he turns good because he questions what he is fighting for, why he is killing unarmed and innocent people.

And Kylo basically said I LIVE FOR THE METH

In my head he says "I'm not on drugs. I'm okay. I was just thinking...you know...why don't you get me a Pepsi?".

I loved this film. Thought it was absolutely amazing. Acting was really good all around, though Daisy caught me off guard with how good she was.

I didn't actually get the feeling of a retread, to me it felt like it's own thing.

I need to do a rewatch in 2D and with less people to get a full grasp on it.

Also, I can't sleep now.

Lol 4:30 here.....

Midnight release fucked me.

I know, it just seems so out of place when you look at the role Storm Troopers played in the series so far. For all I care you can interpret that as a critisism on how Storm Troopers have been portraied in Ep 2-6. It's like if you would watch Lord of the Rings and suddenly an Orc turns good and helps Frodo.

To me as well.

They were clones in Ep2-3 I believe. Ep4-6 I think makes it pretty obvious they are just regular soldiers. They weren't portrayed like orcs or mindless drones.

I thought it was funny we all thought there'd be some sort of new fanfare, or at least a better version of the hacked together fanfare from the digital versions...

...and the film just opens to total silence. Just the logo, "a long time ago..." and BANG

I wish someone would tell these 171 reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes that this movie is just a rip off of A New Hope. Probably some Disney conspiracy.

Just got back from this.

Three things stood out:

1: The Nazi Imagery is STRONG with this one, Holy SHIT!

2: Did.. Did they just blow up Coruscant?!

3: The whole Kylo Ren being Darth Caedus/Jacen Solo seemed a TOUCH hamfisted in the explanation..

And I'm already seeing that Rey is a Genderswap of Anakin Solo...

Buuuuuut...

Honestly? I'm ranking this just below ESB. Second best one right out of the gate.

Thanks.

That first article is actually relevant to me. Mother visiting sometime during Christmas, I don't think she's ever seen or cared about these movies, but I'm planning on going with her anyways.

BTW, did you ever go into why you preferred ST2009 to this?

I'm sure it has been addressed many times over the years but you have to wonder why if blood and family ties can be such an advantage when it comes to The Force and Jedi etc.... why they use the NO SEXY TIME policy.

Yoda's son (or daughter!) could have been a badass.

The Dark Side could have just put their best guy out to stud and made heaps of potential powerful minions.

Or is it just the Skywalker line that seems to work like that?

I don't even want to think about Anakin's birth and Midi-chlorian etc though.

2) No.

3) That's good. Because he is in fact not a Jacen or Ben Skywalker.

Firstly: the ending is botched. The movie should wipe to the credits when Raye and Chewbacca leave, with the arriving on Luke's Scottish island being a post-credit scene.
It's an Irish island.

The entire movie is about a bunch of confused tourists trying to find Kerry on an outdated map, happens everyday in Ireland.

Something else I liked that I didn't really think about till later: Kylo's major force power is to make things freeze in their tracks. He doesn't force push. He doesn't pull them closer. He doesn't even choke them. He literally makes them stand still and then walks his way up to them to do the dirty work.

Considering how he treated the console and that torture chair, that would be a terrifying experience.

I guess we found Bill Cosby's favorite force power since the Mind Trick.

sorry
