Just got back from it. I really liked it.

Either my first or second favourite in the series, will decide if it's better than Empire on repeat viewings.

Han Solo's death destroyed me. It was so obvious it was a death scene paralleling Obi-Wans death in ANH, but then I thought maybe Ben would return to the good side, and then NOPE. Fuck, man.

All the acting was fantastic, and Rey and Finn both nailed it as the new leads.

Funniest movie in the franchise, and nothing felt out of place.

Lightsaber duels weren't flashy, they were swinging at each other with the intention to kill, as they should be. It made sense that Rey could take on Ben because he'd just been shot and was bleeding out.

I know exposition is generally a dirty word nowadays, but the film needed a little more time spent on the galaxy building. Just a few lines here or there could have helped lay out each faction as well as set up the villains motivations. There was virtually no reaction to what Starkiller base had just done, or enough worry about what it may represent for the galaxy.

Yeah, it's hard with a movie that has to:

* Do old stuff to please the fans (who will then call it derivative)
* Set up new characters and locations
* Set up relationships
* have an over-arching story of good vs. evil

Much of the Han-Leia-Kylo Ren stuff was actually too 'in your face' expository imho.
But yeah, some more galaxy building wouldn't have hurt.

I would have gladly cut the scene with the ... uhm, when Solo's freighter was raided and those nasty tentacle monsters escaped. Could have totally gone without that sequence and used the time for an extension of the "it's true, all of it" scene.

it's really not.
c3po and r2d2 were on their way to kenobi, it's not a coincidence they get bought by the guy who lives near kenobi.

bingo.

The only coincidence was Kenobi finding Luke / the droids when they had been attacked.
Beyond that, R2 would have tried to reach Kenobi, no matter whom the Javas might have sold him to.

They aren't canon anymore, though.

i liked the whole Lincoln Memorial vibe

i was super glad that he wasn't a huge-ass monster though, but he simply projected himself to be huge.

The emperor did the same in Empire.
Good thing neither do makeup to hide skin imperfection from showing on their enlarged hologram. :p

i, personally, wouldn't mind if Chewie's role was dialed back dramatically as well now.

His bromance with Han was great, but with him, R2 _and_ BB8 we now have 3 cute helpful creatures that exchange quips with our protagonists in a language we don't understand.

fake edit: hah, i just remembered that scene with C3PO where Han and General Leia met for the first time in ages and Threepio does his whole cockblocky shpiel :)

One of the best parts of the movie, and incredibly C3PO

When we re-watched the old movies recently, me and some of my friends noticed how different C3PO is in a new hope.

In one scene he throws jawas onto a fire

A few scenes later he says "I don't like jawas, disgusting little creatures"

He constantly threatens R2D2 and is in general just a huge asshole. They really dialed him down. A bit in ESB and ROTJ, but a lot in the prequels.

Anyway, would have just liked character emotion for a bit longer with the whole chewie thing. Seemed a little too movie esque that he was visibly over it so quickly.

Snoke is a beautiful princess, exactly the way he is!

I am so glad they barely used C3PO, and R2D2 for that matter.
BB8 has so much character. Being able to freely tilt his head gives him much to play with. Also, that "blowtorch-thumbsup" was such a cute moment.

fakedit: hah, "you might not have recognized me because of my new arm" so great

It's gonna be Jar Jar. Rian Johnson's gonna build a fallout shelter and live out the rest of his life surrounded by money.

There is still hope for Darth Jar Jar.

Loved it, really fun movie. I wanna see more come of the Poe and Finn friendship, they're both really great characters.

Really liked Rey. I look forward to seeing her push the series forward.

Kylo Ren... was a lot less intimidating without the mask. At least he'll have a wicked scar in the next one.

I'm pretty sure that was the point.

His CGI was kinda bad, I'm half-expecting his look to be a ruse now and when we do finally meet him in Episode VIII or IX he'll be something else entirely.

I would find it quite funny if it turned out if Snoke was overcompensating for something. Like if it turns out Snoke is actually an Ewok who turned to the Dark Side after his wife Ewok dumped him for that Hero Ewok from RoTJ. Nah....

I hear they filmed stuff with Luke on the island during the same shoot for Ep 8.

They did, but he's gone back to do more since, i heard? Or at least on his twitter a few weeks ago he said he was getting ready for it, he still looks in decent shape for it.

Also, he was shot by a bowcaster, which is far more powerfull than your average blaster, as the movie clearly wanted to show by giving the weapon to Han twice.

I liked Kylo Ren quite a bit actually. I'm glad he's not just another Vader.

I loved how he was stomping his side. Like "UGH! fucking bowcaster shot got me".

He's a flawed, conflicted human being. Some people call that 'angsty', i prefer it over something like Darth Maul, whose only character trait (in the movie universe!) is 'horns on his head and a dope-ass light saber'

I just bought a ticket for my 2nd viewing.
going all by myself, this time around. Gonna pay some more attention to the whole not-actually-coruscant thing they blow up. Totally missed that.

I really can't wait to watch again with all the analysis I got now. And I also cannot wait for the Blu-ray release with BTS and the ability to dissect every single frame.

Still the only guy to ever kill Liam Nesson on screen so he's cool.

So I just realized the leaked Luke Skywalker image of course had one of these 180-degree multi-camera rigs behind him, similar to the Matrix bullettime ones - Useful when you need an aerial shot of your actor standing one meter from a deadly cliff fall, I guess. (Especially after Hamill supposedly did just narrowly avoid a falling accident on the location..)

I bet Edward Snowden is gonna like this movie.

For an Austrian, it does really hit close to home, somehow.

It took until 2005 to revoke the sentence of those who deserted from the Nazi Wehrmacht, which is kinda shitty, considering that this - in hindsight - was one of the bravest things to do at that time.

Although the awesome finale (space battle + duel) of Jedi might tip the balance slightly in favour of it. Compared to A New Hope though I thought this one was slightly worse, it just doesn't come together as well at the end, nor is the middle as strong.
well it was just the starting point for new trilogy and continuation of beloved original trilogy ... for me it was big success in that regard.
it introduced us to next generation of villains with most likely much bigger presence in future (SpaceNazi Hux, BrienneTrooper o even Kylo who is set to get final Sith training at the end of the movie)
episodes as well as new heroes with the help of the old crew

With Kylo/Ben and Drivers performance I couldn't help but feel that, with better writing, he would of been an excellent Anakin Skywalker in the prequels

really hope they kill Kylo off.
wouldn't really like it, if he would change sides at the end like Vader did.

Vader killing Obi Wan is completly different from Kylo killing Han.
Obi Wan wanted to die too.

I mean is it just me or wouldn't it be a 1000 cooler if when they asked Finn in the meeting:
- You need to tell us the weakness, tell us!!
And then Finn would just look around and say
- There is no weakness, this isn't like the old days...

Great way to make the movies differentiate from the old once aswell...
But no...instead we got the most boring, generic, predicable conclusion ever....

That seems to be what a lot of people say.

He sells the conflicted and emotionally torn person better than Hayden, or in general just the prequel Anakin. It's kinda cool that even if in the new trilogy he plays Vader's general role his actual character isn't that Vader-like.

I'm glad he isn't a carbon copy of Vader, that would of been too easy and predictable.

well my understanding was that he is still a kid , with unfinished Sith training, has quite big anger management issues and feels threatened by the amount of the Force he senses from Rey which further feeds his inferiority complex

I sort of feel like he had training with Luke which stopped when he came down with a touch of the emo-dark-side and was seduced by Snoke but that he either hasn't actually met Snoke in person yet, or at least hasn't had ANY formal training with him.

I'd also guess that Rey was being trained by Luke as a little kid and abandoned when the shit went down, which is why she has some control of the force and skill with the staff.

That would explain a fair bit, including why they're fairly evenly matched when they duel

Yeah, it does really feel that JJ was aiming for that feel.

Given how he's so fascinated by his grandpa, it makes sense that he would have similar conflicted feelings. Though we have to wonder what made him turn to the dark side in the first place. Didn't get the feeling he had a shitty childhood, so I wonder what it was or if it was maybe an inherent tendency to break bad.

This...makes sense.

I think we will learn more as the films progress, especially as it looks like Luke is going to have a major role now so I'm sure those two will cross paths.

Anyone else bothered by the fact they plainly confirmed that they're making up shit as they go this time around? There's a shitton of unexplained stuff in the movie which is just fodder for either the EU or Ep 8 to expand on.

And it's not just casual details mentioned like the clone wars or the kessel run in ANH, whole plot devices are just left hanging in the air.

I want to feel a master plan. This is crap on a Lost level.

I love how Kylo Ren is an actual character and his arc will continue on through the trilogy and he's not another Maul.

One of my favourite moments is when a certain person ignites the Anakin/Luke lightsaber with the "Uncle/Aunt death" score from a new hope playing. The look Ren gives is classic.

So those aliens aboard the Han and Chewies freighter, were they ever something in the EU? They were pretty fucking crazy. Actually that whole scene reminded me of the scene in Star Trek 09 where that monster that attacked Kirk on the snow planet. Also, I know Rey mentioned the Sinking Fields(?), or something like that when talking to BB-8, but when that crashed Tie Fighter went under, it sounded like some sort of monster had eaten it, especially considering the big explosion, and I swear I heard monster growls, me and a friend were trying to work out whether some underground sand monster ate the Tie Fighter or whether it was the quicksand.

They are evenly matched because one of them is seriously hurt. Pretty sure Rey had no previous training. Luke also was one of the best pilots because the Force was dormant in him, same for Rey. She just uses it intuitively, wether it's fighting, flying or the other giveaways like heightened sense of hearing.

Kylo Ren also says directly that he wants to complete his training with Snoke, meaning it is ongoing.
