Exactly. Finn sucks with it and nearly gets killed by a stormtrooper and later Ren. As a strong forcue user, Rey is much better at it but would have still gotten killed if Ren wanted to kill her. If not for his injury it's likely both Finn and Rey would have died in this movie.A lightsaber isn't just a sword. Its blade is incredibly deadly to the wielder, and the blade has no weight unlike a real sword so the balance would be totally off. It's not trivial to use if you know how to use a normal sword. And that's completely ignoring the force aspect of lightsaber combat that is based on reading your opponent and predicting their moves to gain an advantage.
Luke was still left? And it seemed like kind of a shock-baton that was just lightsaber-proof. Definitely something I would have developed if I was in charge of an evil empire.I expected Finn to cut his own hand to be entirely honest :/ . I wanted them to show that a lightsaber isn't a toy and can be dangerous.
When he fell with the light still it should have been it.
I'm not sure what was worse though, this, or the fact that the troopers had anti lightsaber weapons ready despite the fact that there are NOT A SINGLE JEDI LEFT IN THE GALAXY.
I thought the "join me" Vader parody Kylo did was pretty unearned too.
Sure did to me. Same actor and all.
It's not that deadly Finn got hit like crazy and survived just fine -_-
Any guesses on how long has Kylo has been Kylo when TFA starts?
His arrogance led him to get beat by Rey
It was a nice play on the ANH opening. That will never be topped though. ANH opening is one of the most perfect in cinema history.
Hood on Snoke would have made him too much like the emperor. Not sure how to feel about him just yet but I think there's potential for him to be a very good villain.
I asked in the other thread and only got one response:Do you have anybody you know (friends or children) that haven't seen the old star wars movies, that went to see episode VII ?
I feel like this is a decent "check list" sequel, but that it doesn't stand on its own as a movie, not enough "wonderful adventure", too redundant.
I enjoyed it myself but I can't be objective enough to judge the movie on its own ground. I tried and ended up feeling pretty negative towards it.
I'd like to know if this movie can interest and capture people's interest if they know nothing of star wars. (the prequels did a great job at doing that, as well as the clone wars cartoons)
My sister never watched any star wars and thought the movie was awesome.
Thanks for this. She wasn't confused at all or anything?
Interested in more if anyone has it.Not at all, the movie works for newcomers, it's just that fans of the OT will enjoy it more because of the many callbacks. She called us a bunch of nerds when we all applauded when the OT characters come on screen.
Pretty sure him being torn internally by light and dark sides, as well as BLEEDING OUT, is what made him lose, rather than his own arrogance.
I feel that Kylo Ren's trying too hard and too fast to get to Vader's level. He's desperate for recognition and respect when Snoke sees him as a child in training (based on the fact he wants to complete his training) and the other generals (like Nux) don't look at him in a positive light either - especially Nux, he's clearly not intimidated.
He's obviously a rookie still in many respects and is trying to sprint before he can even walk properly. Not too dissimilar to Anakin in many ways, getting ahead of himself and wanting to cut corners. He's clearly talented and dangerous but he's like a child with a gun.
His arrogance led him to get beat by Rey and the cheek of even asking her to join him when he's hardly accomplished just adds to his character he tries to play when he puts on the mask. He wants the status and power when he's not ready for it and is trying to race there.
Just some observations, mind. Could be trying to justify wrong characterizations but in my mind I think his character is great.
What did you guys think of the Snoke/Maz CGI?
I was very underwhelmed, solid voice work mind

Maz was OK. Probably what you'd expect from the average blockbuster not headed by James Cameron. Snoke was kinda shitty. What did you guys think of the Snoke/Maz CGI?

So you're not shocked by the fact that every storm trooper (let's not pretend the only one that had such baton stomped randomly into Finn) can carry a baton that basically renders a lightsaber useless, despite the fact that Luke has been missing for 15 years.
Ok then.
Maz was terrible, unacceptable.
Snoke was allright, but having him in 3 scenes in the same setup was lame.

Truth right there. That's why most lightsaber duels seem to be a draw for the most part. Jedi playing with swords who can read an opponents next move.
You hardly see one user kicking the others ass in a fight until a mistake is made.
Snoke just looked unfinished, like a vampire from a tv show, but since it was a hologram im giving them the benefit of the doubt that its a bait and switch.
Maz is just, it wont age particularly well.
It feels strange to me to have two big characters CGI and iffy when your pitch has been this is practical, is there really no way either could have been serviced with actors in the flesh? Just an odd design move.
i thought everybody's complaints would be about the lack of Luke. I was wrong lol.
Though my Dad has already decided that the movie sucks cuz he found out in the paper that Luke is only at the end. ha
It surprising that a clearly ranking storm trooper like Phasma would turn off the planets entire shielding because someone pointed a gun at her.
If you could manufacture and mass issue a highly effective melee weapon that just so happens to be effective against lightsabers, why wouldn't you?So you're not shocked by the fact that every storm trooper (let's not pretend the only one that had such baton stomped randomly into Finn) can carry a baton that basically renders a lightsaber useless, despite the fact that Luke has been missing for 15 years.

A saber is just a sword. She swung it around and like Luke vs Vader in ROTJ, overpowered him with her anger. It's not like she was flipping around twirling it. Like the OT duels, it was a battle of wills and she won.
Why people think you need something special to use à laser saber ? It's Just a sword.

Why would it render a lightsaber useless? I doubt a stormtrooper wins a 1-on-1 battle with Luke, Kylo Ren or Rey. It seems logical that they would develop these kind of weapons, giving stormtroopers some kind of defense in close-combat. Let's face it, troopers have been pretty pathetic in the past. Cannon fodder with terrible aim. And we had the droids in the prequels who were even worse. I was afraid Finn would be able to kick ass just because he had a lightsaber, thankfully Troopers seem to be better prepared this time. Given that Kylo Ren is highly motivated to track down Luke, it seems logical his squad of soldiers would have these melee weapons. If a group of troopers with these batons surround Luke, he may be in trouble. So you're not shocked by the fact that every storm trooper (let's not pretend the only one that had such baton stomped randomly into Finn) can carry a baton that basically renders a lightsaber useless, despite the fact that Luke has been missing for 15 years.

I assumed that the whole internal conflict of Ren was just a ruse he used to get Han in the most vulnerable situation. Han's persuasion was working way too well for me to think it was actually legitimate.

This and this. This is how a lightsaber works and how it works so good with the force and the blaster deflection and such.
There is no issue here. I think we can all agree that Rey is skilled enough with melee combat to not to kill herself with the lightsaber but should not be good enough to present a threat to Kylo, hurt or not.
I really enjoyed the film however it would be an 8/10 for me. I felt they did rely to much on ANW and yet another Death Star seemed lazy.

The guy was shot in the stomach. Or well, to the side of his stomach.
Shot.
It wasn't a scratch, there was blood dripping on the floor.
Now I have personally never been shot straight through my body by a laser blaster, but I'm fairly certain it is hard to even stand and walk, let alone physically fight someone with my big ass laser sword. It really isn't as much of a stretch as some of you are making it out to be. Rey can fight decently, Ren is badly wounded, so that's why she's able to hold her own.
Just got back from seeing it. I thought it had a great opening (stopping the blaster bolt in mid-air was cool), a too-fast and ultimately meaningless middle, and a rushed but serviceable ending.
None of the characters save Han, Poe, and Rey really got to do anything, Leia was an exposition-delivery device, and I thought her and Han's conversations about Ben were laying it on a bit too thick, while also preventing the movie from exploring more interesting ideas.
What someone else here said about it feeling too small is right. I think they should have moved on from the BB-8 plotline to something more interesting early on in the film. Imagine if half of A New Hope was just the Empire looking for R2-D2 and C-3PO. Other plot points that took up too much time in my view were Finn's lie about being a Resistance member (when Rey finds out, her reaction is pretty much "Okay.") and the pirates/monsters bits on Han's freighter.
Shorten or cut these bits and you could let the locations and environments have more character and make it clearer why they are the way they are. I have no idea why Maz runs a cantina in a thousand-year-old temple, for one thing. No idea how the Resistance knows who Snoke is. And the movie's final battle between the Resistance and the First Order is resolved in a fifteen-minute skirmish.
