Does anyone else feel like we need to see Rey with a double-bladed lightsaber once she starts training with Luke? Luke has his lightsaber back, she gets the double-bladed one. I don't know if it's just because she was using the staff or because I just want to see more of those.

I also want to see somebody rocking dual lightsabers but we probably won't unless they start introducing a lot more people who use lightsabers. But they seem to want to keep the numbers down.

Her staff does look an awful lot like Maul's saber.

Heh... I love that you referred to him as Miles from LOST.

I was so distracted whenever Ken Leung came on screen. "It's that Asian dude from LOST. JJ must have did him a solid and got him a gig in this flick."

Jun Tao comes to mind more than anything no matter where I see him, Lost, Xmen 3 whatever.

I think probably my least favourite scene, which felt very out of place, was on the Falcon with the two crews after Han, the CGI beast was abhorrent and im not entirely sure what purpose it solved, the dialogue was also very poor. Just a strange scene honestly.

Scene was totally bizarre. It must have played a lot better in their heads than on screen.

I can understand in theory Han being besieged by two factions he both owes money to and both are in his way is a good setup for comedy and something entirely possible in the universe, just in practice it served no purpose and was written poorly.

I saw a screenshot of Han dying but quickly closed it. I didn't really see what happened but as soon as he walked up to Kylo I knew what was gonna happen. Damn it.

Maybe it's because we know that Harrison Ford doesn't like Start Wars but Han dying was almost a forgone conclusion to me.

I mean I didn't know for sure if it would be in this episode but if anyone of the original crew was going to die it was going to be him. Also he just seemed practically draper in Death Flags throughout the whole movie.

I'm not sure if I liked them showing Kylos face the first time. He's not much to look at for one thing, in that he has no gross scars like Vader, but the second time with Han it didn't have as much impact. Be like showing Vaders face before the final scene with Luke.

That helicopter shot at the end should've either been cut entirely or been a wide angle two shot from the side with the ocean in the background (maybe as a tiny nod to Kylo's mention of Rey imagining the ocean or whatever it was he said).

The shot they have now just feels jarring and out of place.

Apathy said:
Finn and Rey took too quickly to lightsabers. Rey is a bit more understandable if she is gifted in the force, but Finn should have been a pushover for Kylo-Ren with some quick force sidestep or something, hes a trained sith.

Sith? Totes. Trained? Eh, kinda. He's definitely full of rage and emotion, but he shows throughout the film that he's really only a fledgling Sith. Both Rey and Finn have training (Finn as a Stormtrooper with those melee weapons and Rey with her staff), and let's not forget that Luke got some good hits in on Vader in Empire.

This kind of stood out to me too, especially during the scene between Han and Leia when they're talking about Kylo. It's not a huge issue but it made the dialogue feel a bit clunky, almost like they were concerned we'd forget that he's their son.

I understand that they wanted to save the name reveal for the bridge but c'mon. I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to this sort of stuff but the constant use of that phrase was so annoying.

Also, agreed on that helicopter shot. Shit was baaad.

If the Republic is the backers of the Resistance they must be pretty beefy. You're saying they didn't know this extremist group had a planet sized weapon? Republic is all kinds of dumb.

Did anyone else love the whole 'Falcon needs two Pilots' thing... and then Rey/Chewie both fly it solo?

Shit, Chewbacca is the fucking MVP here far as I'm concerned. I loved the scenes that hinted he was a ladies man.

'You're so brave.'
'Mragahaj.'

THAT MOVIE WAS SO GOOD! sooo is Finn a jedi to come? I lowkey think he might get trained to be one but then go back to the dark side MUAHAHAHA

Finn is the one most likely to be a light Jedi. There is more of a chance of Rey going over to the dark side. Finn hasn't shown raw anger like Rey has.

It is so unfitting for our first look at Luke in 30 years, so so unfitting

Gah, its things like this where I honestly honestly have no idea someone can watch it and think "well, we delivered on that"

Did anyone else think that the CGI on Snoke was terrible?

I kept telling myself that it was just a hologram of Snoke, and that he will look much more realistic when we actually see him in person in the film.

He still looked a little weird though.

Aren't you more concerned that billions or trillions died in seconds? That people live like slaves scavenging for crap in order to eat? It's a harsh universe. The baby thing was a minor point to me and I don't believe it's a huge travesty in the greater scheme of what's happening and at stakes. We disagree on the extent, severity and impact of what was said re; babies. Let's leave it there.

I saw it in 2D and I'm glad for it. 3D has really added nothing, and even distracted, to so many films since Avatar.

I'm willing to end the discussion but I don't understand what you're talking about with those last points. Of course, billions of people dying by a Death Star is bad what does that have to do with Stormtrooper babies? The point I'm getting at is that the OT was simple, Empire=Bad, Rebels=Good, Empire=Space Nazis.

To introduce an element that weirdly humanizes the grunts of the bad guys adds a layer of complexity that makes things less simple. It's no longer Space Nazis v. Good guys, it's possible brain washed soldiers who may have never had real free will v. "Good" guys.

Yes it looked unfinished, but I too am holding onto hope that its a bait and switch

Kylo's got a nice new scar on his face so don't expect those Zuko comparisons to go away anytime soon folks.
I totally had a Zuko moment when that happened as well. Once again makes me wonder if he can still be redeemed if the writers end up writing his character like Zuko...

Him and the CG squid monsters both looked pretty bad to me, but the rest of the effects were good. Kylo's saber especially was excellent. I'm curious to see what direction they take the Snoke stuff. Because I hope it's not just some straight up Emperor copying. I feel like it won't be.

Considering my crowd popped for every returning character simply appearing onscreen, I was kinda surprised when Luke turned and nothing happened. No gasps, no cheers.

But then I was like "Well, maybe they're reacting the same way I did when I saw him at the press screening." Which was to notice that his mouth was hanging open, and he looked slightly crazy and not all there, which was weird as shit when the music was trying to tell me this was a sorta-kinda uplifting moment.

It felt like the moment needed to NOT be a helicopter shot, and needed to have him speak. Say SOMETHING.

....There's a line between homage and recreation, and this crossed over far too much in the latter for me to really enjoy it. Combine that with the 'Disney quip-a-minute' approach, and I was...not impressed.

Couldn't stand Kylo Ren's actor/voice, and Carrie Fisher was mangling her words as Leia. Add that to the 'our son' 'my son' 'bring our son home' instead of just saying his name....either leave it out as a surprise element, or just say the name, lol.

Rey/Finn/Han were good, though, even if the Finn-love angle felt a bit forced.

Finn better be a jedi, though, given how he didn't cut himself in half with a lightsaber when trying to fight with it.

Really, really hope they can make things more original in 8/9.

I think if you gave people a poll it would end up around a 7/7.5, which is perfectly acceptable, I think its around a 7, its just that there is so much that could have been better, its not a million miles away from being a really good film which is almost as horrible as it being terrible frankly, because you can see the good in it but it never quite goes to the right places.

It's a parallel to the Jedi way of doing things. Jedi give kids a choice to join, First Order just grab them. Finn was taken by evil forces and rebelled by being good, Ben was taken by good forces and rebelled by being bad. Rey is the anomaly because she was taken by good forces AND then by bad forces... and her goal was merely survival.

It's pretty damn clever writing.

He was also just shot in the torso.

One of my biggest question coming out of this: Can/Will Ben Solo be redeemed?

I mean killing Han Solo seemed to seal the deal here right?
Even if they ever capture him alive, I'm pretty certain that the Republic will execute Ben for all he has done up to this point, which even Leia won't have the authority over such matter.

Also, when Snoke said "complete his training", does that imply that Ben now gets a Darth title and becomes a full-fledged Sith Lord?

I am extremely intrigued in what they will have in store for Ben going forward...

The second that happened, I was like, nope, there's no way Leia would ever forgive him now and there's no way Luke could forgive him.

I personally like all the "this was stupid. That was stupid. This didn't make sense. 10/10"

Honestly I was expecting him to say "Welcome back"

That would have got me super excited for the next year and a halfs wait

When Rei grabs the lightsaber, is it a flashback or a vision?

Yeah, the crowd went wild for Han, Leia, R2D2, Admiral Ackbar, hell even Nien Nunb got some cheers, but nothing for Luke. I think we were all waiting for him to do something more. I liked the buildup with the stairs in that scene and the accompanying score, but the Luke reveal itself left a lot to be desired.

Phasma was barely even used in this movie, that was such a disappointment. I just remembered. Wow what a letdown there.

Also, there were a few moments that I thought Kylo-Ren was going to get super emotional like Hayden Christensen's Anakin.

FWIW, I understand where you're coming from and agree.

I can only assume that it will play into Finn's character in the sequels. If not it's a really pointless detail that adds nothing but only introduces hesitation in thinking about the fighting.

It's fun. It could be a lot better though. You have some potentially great characters for the sequels (except for the gawd Han Solo :( )

so now that Rian Johnson is making something that will likely be freed of the shackles of "hey remember those old movies? make it EXACTLY like that" and he'll be able to do his own thing it's gonna be awesome.

So Kylo got slapped in the face with Rey's saber? That scene was kinda blurry in 3D so I had a hard time seeing.

Yeah. He actually gets beat up pretty good:

Chewie hits him in the side with that bowcaster (which has become the Star Wars equivalent to the Poom Poom gun from Expendables)
Finn slashes his arm
Rey Stabs his other arm
Rey fucks up his face.
