Rey seems too good at everything to just stay as a good guy, similar to how anakin went bad. Luke ended up being the best ever but he started off as a bumbling babe and always faced struggles.

Anakin and Rey boss everything they try. Maybe she was abandoned on Jakku by Luke as he knew she would turn to the dark side and become the most dangerous Sith Lord ever. She could be related to Snoke or maybe luke saw darkness in himself and it was magnified in his offspring.

But now that she awakened Luke has no choice but to try and keep her to the light path.

Kylo will find redemption with his mother and Rey will find belonging and family with the dark side and Finn will have to try to win her back.
Finn, the stormtrooper turned jedi padawan against Rey, the most dangerous sith lord ever.. sounds amazing.
I suspect that they're gonna have to explain Rey's massively quick turn into a Jedi in the next film. Right now it seems completely against existing canon. Maybe it has something to do with Palpatine no longer exerting a dark shroud over everything? I don't know, but I think there has to be some explanation.

I think Rey being a padawan in Lukes Jedi Academy, that lost her memory is the best explanation yet.
My guess: Ben Solo found the lightsaber and touched it, saw Anakin murdering oyunglings and jedi in the temple. He said: Ok, if i want to be that strong, i need to do the same. So he proceeded to murder all Luke's apprentices.

the flashback shows that Ben Solo was leading other jedi like figures though

It seems that she was one of the characters who was hit really, really hard by the editing. The un-cut version of this movie is going to be even better, it looks like.
I've said this before, but I really don't think there was anything more to Phasma (for this movie at least) that would've been cut out. I totally expected it to be a super minor role because all Gwendoline Christie ever talked about was how it meaningful it was for Phasma to be a woman under that armor -- which it is. But never anything about her personality, her motivations, her fight scenes or basically anything about her role other than her gender.

Didn't notice that, what does he say? I will pay more attention the next time I see it though.
I can't really remember, but I think it was bits taken from his speech to Luke about the Jedi/Empire/lightsabers from IV.

Nod, also Maz CG-whatever saying the saber belonged to her (am I misquoting? that's how I remember it anyway). And saying the one she was waiting to return wasn't coming (presumably her mother?), but that there was another (presumably Luke?). All felt like signs she's Luke's daughter to me. Tho you would think she would remember this if she was as old as she was in the flashbacks when she got taken away...

Well, i took it as:

"You know that those who you are waiting for aren't coming to pick your up. But there is someone else, waiting for you."

That doesn't necessarily imply they're related.

Same with it having been Anakin's saber, then Luke's ... and now it's calling for her. Doesn't necessitate that she's a descendant either. (does imply it though)

Kylo doesn't know her
She doesn't know Luke. The flashbacks aren't memories, she saw the knights of Ren

She was left on Jakku as a kid too.

Wait, how is that incompatible?
I don't mind being wrong but:

Let's say Kylo Ren is now 30 years old, was 18 years (he did wear a mask in the 'vision' / 'flashback') when he betrayed Luke and joined the dark side. And maybe the knights of Ren helped him mess up Luke's business.

So: A 6 year old Rey (who had been in early training for 2 yeas, maybe) was witness to the slaughter at the "Skywalker School for gifted children" - which would explain her having (supressed) memories of the knights of Ren. Luke managed to escape with her and R2, they took shelter (so she 'remembers' scene with Luke's robot hand touching R2), and he took her to a planet as unsuspecting as Tatooine -> Jakoo. After which, he went into exile to reflect on things.

It's not like Kylo Ren would know how anyone he murdered (or didn't manage to murder) at the school would look like, 10 years later.

I don't mind that story being super false. My main issue with it wouldn't be Luke or Kylo Ren, but mostly the fact that when she was dropped off, her arm was being held by that fat scrap dealer dude (played by Simon Pegg). I don't think Luke would have a despicable dude like that watch over Rey - we know what that did to Anakin :P

Episode 8, Finn and Phasma "confrontation"?

Ok, I am really interested. She seemed like the most disposable character ever in any Star Wars movie..

Has anybody seen this scene in the movie, btw?

I really liked the atmosphere of that shot, but I think there was nothing like this happening, isn't it?

Just a Vanity Fair photoshoot, not taken from the actual movie.

So Rey will go bad same as Kylo? That would make
Luke the worst trainer ever. Snoke was awful. Guardians of the Galaxy had better villains.

Also how would you just force-wipe someone's entire memory? We've never seen that done before in the series. Seems like a lame way to tease a new mystery.

There's a big scene between Finn and Phasma cut out of the beginning of the movie (the scene that comes after "bring your blaster for inspection". There is also a conspicuous edit after they catch Phasma to moving along (trash cute and compactor jokes notwithstanding).

Where Phasma orders Finn to do something fairly horrible, which is what prompts him to go rescue Poe.

Yeah I dunno about making Rey a Skywalker, now that would be a retread that would break the new trilogy for me. All of this war and drama in the galaxy all caused by one cursed family!

WE NEED AN EXTENDED CUT. DISNEY PLZ.

we know nothing of snoke yet. if the plagueis is snoke theories are true snoke might be the most dangerous sith yet.

I don't think its unbelievable that Rey could best Kylo, considering Kylo was injured after being shot in the gut with Chewie's bowcaster, bleeding out from that, then slashed in the shoulder by Finn with the lightsaber. This would have put him at a disadvantage. Remember, Chewie's bowcaster hits like a mule sending stormtroopers flying, And Kylo took it standing. Its a powerful weapon.

No force-wipe, she was too young to remember.

Does anyone have a link to that spoilerboard pdf with all the guesswork on? Curious how similar to the final movie it resembled. The newest thing is just the movie transcribed .

Could she not have had some Jedi training as a child, before she was abandoned on Jakku, even if she doesn't remember it? I mean it would make sense if she's the daughter of a Jedi (or two) that she would at least have some knowledge of how the Force works.

And I don't have a problem with her holding her own against Kylo. She's a strong fighter with a melee weapon anyway and he'd been shot by Chewbacca and winged a couple of times by Finn at that point.

I don't even know who the Knights are. Are they all Sith?

There are no Sith anymore. At the moment at least.

Yeah, pretty sure she must have had some.

Pros:

- BB-8 is fucking amazing. Move over R2. BB-8 claiming your throne
- Sound design was legit. Just gave all of the battles a real sense of physicality.
-Acting was top notch across the board
- The script was solid, the jokes generally worked, and there wasn't a ton of cringy dialogue
- Poe is GOAT
- No annoying Jar Jar like character
- The specific story told was legit
- Great to see a minority and a female have leading roles

Cons:

- The overarching world didn't get any real love
- There are a lot of wtf questions on how we got from ROTJ to here
- Because of those two points it did make the resistance a head scratcher
- Kylo was injured but maybe Rey was too strong
- Rath scene where they find Han and Chewie felt more GOTG or Star Trek than Star Wars
- Music was largely forgettable

Others:

- I can see how one would think it was a good Sci-Fi film with Star Wars stuff thrown in vs a Star Wars flick
- Maybe it was just me but it felt unevenly shot.
- Need to see again to see if the feels are there because of the movie not just cause Star Wars is back

People complaining about Snoke CGI did you go 3D or 2D I saw it 2D and thought he was fine.

Also whilst Ren is having his tantrum and destroying that room, the two storm troopers that just run the other way is hilarious.

To completely fuck the home team over with the shields lol. Terrible character.

Seriously why not make her the fight with Finn and the electric stick dude. They could have prefaced it with her shocking him earlier on when he took his helmet off

I think this would have been the best scenario, give the character weight, made the weapon she used "special" instead of standard storm trooper anti lightsaber and it could have been easily interrupted after she gave Finn a schooling.

Funniest scene in the movie.

Almost on the edge of what you could do humor wise without cheapening the main villain, but it worked..

Really great..

So happy Ford is out!

He was pretty bad in 2D.

I feel like the only one who thought Kylo Ren was the best of the new cast. I loved how he resembled Anakin, as if he's the Anakin that always should have been instead of what we got in the prequels. He begins as a mysterious, menacing villain but as we discover more about his motive, we learn he's really a conflicted, sort of inexperienced yet powerful sith.

He's sort of the opposite to what Vader was in the OT. He removes his helmet in the first film, he's conflicted early on instead of Vader who became conflicted at the end of Jedi. I wonder if Kylo will eventually go full sith down the line.

I sort of love everything about the character; the way he sounded, moved, and the performance itself with the mask both on and off was strong.

He was great. I like the scene where he interrogates Rey. She calls him a monster that hides behind a mask (or something like that) and he simply takes his helmet off.

hmmm I agree that the existence of the resistance is a head scratccher but i dont see how it is a bad thing that they havent answered all the questions yet. there will be two other movies.

I thought the settings and alien designs were uninspired. Honestly needed some of Georges touch there. Jabba's Palace shit on the alien creature designs in this

Agreed. I thought they relied a little too much on the OT when it came to spaceships. X-wings and TIE Fighters again? Even Empire and Jedi introduced new ship designs.

Also I thought the sound design was lackluster, it lacked the unique punch of the other SW films.

EDIT: Ben Burtt was the sound designer in TFA, my apologies.

One bit that kinda took me out of the movie:

Did anyone else notice that when Leia was resting her head on Han, and they went to the close up, it was SUPER out of focus? Or was that a flaw with my screening? Everything else was in focus, but it felt like they were really trying to not show the harshness of age on Carrie Fisher's face.

Otherwise, loved it. Had a blast.

J.A.M.

Enjoyable. Spotty editing, cinematography and music. Characters that didn't act based on the logic established within the movie but it happens.
Some cool moments, some unnecessary retreads and call backs. It will be successful and make Disney a lot of bank. Actors were fine mostly but Carrie Fisher has a wooden face. Should have been killed and have Chewie be the liaison between the old and the new movies as the has a negative emotion range.

Felt I got my monies worth. (4 dollars), but as I said J.A.M.

Just got back from it
Fun movie overall I liked the first half more though.

Ben looked so...nerdy. So so nerdy.
Dang did Carrie Fisher age, no offense but she looks quite different to how she looked as Leia during the OT heh.

Finn better become a Jedi and I wanna commend John Boyega for his excellent performance in this movie.

To be set up for episode 8

Just like how they set up Bobba Fett?
Come on, by her last scene in this movie, she's Bobba's successor in being usless and only exists to sel merch :P
