I know JJ was trying to appease the old nostalgic crowd and go back to practical effects for a large portion of the film...but for the most part it looked terrible.
That vulture thing picking at something dead when Rey was flying into town after the scavenging run was terrible. It just moved back and forth with no other movement and honestly looked like a child's feathery toy.
Maz's bar was full of terrible costumes. Because that is what it looked like. People in costumes. I can count on one hand the amount of times that one of the aliens/creatures looked good, including Chewbacca.
The Resistance aliens were bad. Ackbar looked like a terrible imitation of his VI self. Nien Nunb, the pilot who fought alongside Lando suddenly had his head enlarged and looked more fake than ever before. The alien pilot that makes the final trench run with Poe, who then dies, not only looked bad but is also magically in the crowd of people on the Resistance planet once the Falcon lands and Chewie, Rey, and Finn come off.
The three best-designed non-humans were Chewbacca, Maz, and that tentacle monster on Han's transport ship. Two of them were CGI.

I found it so funny that the "Bad ass scene" she was in for the reveal trailer was literally that long. And milliseconds after that shot she gets yanked off screen in an undignified way by chewy.
They put her in a trash compactor. So there is a chance she survived.
I strongly suspect that Han getting killed off helped lure Harrison Ford to agree to do the film.
I also suspect that JJ had the original plan for RotJ in mind, in which Han was originally planned to die at the start of the third act.
Flashbacks? Star Wars hasn't really done them before, but....

I forgot to mention that I honestly thought Finn was going to end up being Lando's son or grandson.
We have no idea of Kylo's motivation really.
We know he's trying to continue what he thinks is Vader's legacy, but we don't know what that is or why he's doing it.
For all we know Luke touched him in his no-no-zone.

Kylo's emotion is what I liked the best about his character. He's human. He wastes time taking off his mask because he believes he's in control; he's arrogant. He slashes up the control panel because he is upset. Extremes that work against him but to be align with the Dark Side don't you have to let your negative emotions run wild?
Also it seems clear that he is torn. I doubt that scene on the bridge with Solo was just a skit.

100% agreed, I'm going with she's Luke's kid. She was immediately strong in the force after Ben captures her because her suppressed training was awakened (haha). Being a Skywalker she's obviously super powerful. Ben is the same was but he's still very raw and can't harness it due to how conflicted he is.

Yeah much would have preferred a make-uped dude. Or even if we only ever saw him from behind for this movie. We didn't even see the emperor in ANH, would have made sense to shrowd him instead of close up on his CGI face.

I'm not the world's biggest Star Wards fan, but I really loved seeing this movie. IT may have made me a super fan, haha. Having admittedly not seen 1-3 and having not seen 4-6 in many years I didn't know what to expect. This movie pulled me back into my star wars fan filled childhood. Lightsaber battle rocked, and seeing Han get killed had me and the rest of the theater gasping.
Her voice was fucking perfection though. The most "Star Wars-esque" voice I've ever heard in any of the Star Wars movies, if that makes any sense.
To align with the Dark Side you have to embrace your emotions! Kylo's weakness is that he allows them to run wild--and that same thing is what led to Vader's "downfall" in the OT, too. The Sith axiom is: Let your rage flow through you. Not: Let your rage consume you.
Well, Tarkin was the only one to do that. Imperial officers beyond that, like Admiral Piett, Ozell, even Moff Jerjerrod was somewhat scared of him (less scared than of the Emperor, of course)
not like those shields were ever shown to have helped an X-Wing.
Are shielded X-Wings "canon"?
Vader took down X-Wings in the death star trench with a few shots. - was it because they had aligned all energy to the frontal deflector shields?

It is how funny how the movie picks up from, or fulfills, what Kasdan originally intended for ROTJ's ending: Luke vanished, Leia in command of the rebellion, and Han dead.

i love my space battles. Planet attack was cool but there's something really fucking great about capital ships pounding each other with missiles while fighters and bombers are dogfighting all over the place

Though the fact that these spacecraft were doing battle in atmosphere made me lose my mind at the thought of a space battle. I dunno what it was, but seeing them fly around in an atmosphere made me really appreciate the fact that doing combat in space is probably a shitload more terrifying.

Speaking of which, was the droid in Maz's castle who alerted the Resistance about BB-8 supposed to be a broken version of the medical droid from ESB?

I really liked Kylo's character. Thought it was written, and performed, perfectly. I agree--that bridge scene seemed true. I think Kylo knew that his parents were probably the last chance he had at ever turning to the light and, for whatever reason, he wanted to sever that tie...but I think there is a real turmoil in him and I hope they come back to that.
I like how vulnerable and volatile Kylo is. They balanced it well enough to keep him intimidating (his use of the Force feels more like something from a horror movie) and "real."

Kylo's dark side was TEARING HIM APART Leia.
I fully expect Episode VIII to delve deep into Luke's academy and its fall. I think it's going to be Kylo's movie, as his character is totally fleshed out.
I'm just curious if they're going to pull a redemption arc for Episode IX or not, and whether the audience will buy it after he killed Han.
I'm kind of giddy that for the first time in my life, I'm old enough that there's a Star Wars trilogy where I don't know what the endgame is.

But seriously, if she isn't using a double bladed lightsaber then somebody fucked up. Rey has to be attached to that staff for a reason.

Ford LOOKED like he was having fun. You can't fake that.. You just can't. Look at Indy 4... This was Ford's best performance in yea--- no, decades. I really think Han dying played a part in that. It gave him one last hurrah in the role that brought him pretty much all of his success in life, letting loose and not having to worry about following it up or being attached to this for the rest of his life.
I would seriously not be surprised if he retired after this.
I see your point there, but if you can stop a blaster bolt with the Force, then the next step is being able to control and even redirect it.
It was also incredibly cool at how the bolt continued just as Ren stepped onto the ship. Amazing!
The difference was that was before they had Vader's character and status nailed down. By ESB he's very much second only to the Emperor and no one questions him. Also Tarkin never talked shit to Vader, he just seemed to outrank him, Hux was plenty disrespectful to Ren and both seemed to be on equal positions given they both reported to Snoke at the same time and Hux openly blamed Ren for his failures.

The fact that Leia sent Ben to Luke is also kind of telling--much like the EU, it looks it may have taken a while before Luke even decided he wanted to rebuild the Jedi, that or perhaps Leia and Han decided from go that Ben wouldn't ever be a Jedi--but were forced to when it was clear the force was having an impact on him in negative ways.
fuck double bladed lightsabers. They're clearly taking a step away from the dancy fencing fighting styles, back to actual swordfights.

Yeah, they mention in ANH that their shields are all front. So that conveniently covers that.
When they specifically mentioned turning on the Falcon's shields I was kind of expecting to actually see them represented visually, but they didn't. That's fine. The other movies never showed them.

Anyone else feel like Driver was doing a little Anton Chigurh with his Kylo voice? I actually had to make sure he was a native English speaker when I got out of the movie 
I don't mean that in a bad way--but when he takes his mask off the first time with Rey, you can hear some interesting enunciation in his voice. I really liked it.
