Actually no, the Sith are a very specific order of dark side users that stand in opposition to the Jedi. There are other dark-side and light-side orders and religions that use the force in their own ways without being Jedi or Sith.

For those inquiring about the Republic/Resistance/First Order background, Verge did an excellent write up of all the new cannon. It's spoilers abound so if your planning on reading any of the books, comics I would avoid. I'll outline the universe as a whole after Jedi below.

In short order:
-After the battle of Endor, the Empire basically went ballistic. Pulled propaganda regarding the Rebels, and really forced their resolve on keeping control of some territories
- A new Republic is formed, and the Capitol is moved from Coruscant. The Capitol now changes after every election
- The Empires final strike for dominance takes place above Jakku. They pretty much throw everything they have at the New Republic, and lose. They splinter off, and some factions that remain loyal to the Empire are formed (First Order).
- A treaty is signed between the Empire and the New Republic.
- Mon Mothma, now in control of the New Republic, disbands 90% of the military.
- The forms the Resistance only after hearing of the First Order gaining power in the outer rim, and assigns Leia as the general.
Luke was rebuilding the Jedi Order, including his nephew, who was seduced by the dark side, likely after Snoke informed him of his lineage. He became obsessed with his grandfather, and destroyed the new Jedi Order. Luke then went into seclusion.

Rey kinda reminds me of someone like the Jedi Exile in KOTOR II (minus the death of the Force part). I feel like there is definitely an amnesiac element here, it didn't feel like she was discovering it for the first time, but that there was some barrier within her that was removed and she had an "awakening" of a sort.
I burst out laughing when it appeared Rey friendzoned Finn while he was unconscious.

And I am convinced that FN-B4D455 would have done it. And would have turned down the parade, instead offering that budget to go towards the funerals for all of his friends killed by the traitor Finn.

and i shall state again that i didn't mind that they tried to build up YET ANOTHER character in this first movie.
Phasma has been introduced, she'll be holding a SERIOUS grudge in Episode VIII.
That's all the buildup she needs in this film.
Imagine if they had shoved the Emperor, Vader, Tarkin, Jabba AND Boba Fett into ANH. That's too many villains to properly give a character arc.

That's more or less Finn's name too, he says right at the start the only name his has is his designation number. Poe just names him Finn for "FN".

Resistance theme was okay, but it's almost impossible to catch the leitmotif. Even Trade Federation march was better in this regard.
However, Rey's theme is grrrrrreat.

Well in my opinion the Jedi are evil.
Kylo was probably my favorite part of the movie.
I hope they get together so we can have bi-racial skywalker and racist people lose their shit
Wow, sorry to hear that. My theater experience was totally the opposite. Everyone was very much into it and very pleasant. Lots of cheering, laughing, clapping, yelling "noooooo!" no one making fun of anyone else. Great atmosphere.
I fear this trilogy may have blown its load with debuting the Starkiller base right away and then blowing it up just as quickly. I think it would have had a lot of impact as a built-up reveal for the third film, but launching right off of Death Star II with an easily-dispatched Super Death Star came off as uninspired and formulaic.
I'm struggling to think how they can really ramp up the stakes of the First Order going forward once they've already played the "they have a base that can exterminate whole planetary systems" card. They really should have made the First Order an increasingly oppressive threat over the three films, not started them out as super-powerful and then sent them licking their wounds by blowing up their homebase/biggest asset right off the bat.

Anakin had a goal. Kylo is a lost boy, we might not know what turned his 12 years old self into that, but that doesn't change the way he acted in this movie, which is being a conflicted puppet, that killed his family.
He wasn't "evil", or "motivated", he literally had no self control (both mentally and with his powers), like the child he is.
Darth Vader in the suit was NEVER Anakin's plan, that was a consequence of his reckless actions and Palpatine's manipulation.
Anakin remained as Vader because he literally couldn't do anything else, too much self hatred, inhuman body, too weak to kill Palpatine.
That's not at all what is going on with Kylo in the movie. And yes they can elaborate in the sequels, and I hope they do, but I can't let people say how Kylo is just like Anakin when it's really not justified.

There was that very brief mention of using a clone army. Who do you think suggested that, JJ or Kasdan, or was it leftover from the Arndt script?
It made sense to explain, but with how OT they were trying to keep it, I'm just curious who in the writing process brought up this prequel element.

Empire didn't need a Death Star to make the Empire feel like a threat. I'm sure Rian Johnson has some tricks up his sleeve.

Haha, sadly not. There were a couple random stormtroopers listed in the credits, I imagine he was one of them. But I say we run with it.

He doesn't know his birth name as he was kidnapped as a child. All he was given was a military designation. He said all of this quite clearly. I'm surprised you missed it.
In b4 his last name is Calrissian.
The problem is Kylo's backstory is left unresolved in his movie role so far, so we can simply imagine the circumstances for now. Anakin's backstory is completely told now, and it's completely unconvincing.
If Kylo's backstory ends up being unconvincing too, then that's a shame, but so far, he is better acted and more convincing as a raging kid being twisted by the dark side than Anakin was lurching from "Whinebag" to "Mass murderer" in the course of one scene.

Enough is enough, we need stricter lightsaber control! The slaughter of innocent young Jedi at two separate Jedi academies is two too many. He was a Muun in the old EU. His race hasn't been confirmed and I doubt it will be in the new canon.
100% sure it isn't Plagueis anyway.
Rey was the one child that lived in the slaughter and Luke has the old man watch over her on Jakku.
Totally agreed and one of the first things I said to my wife when leaving. We watched the marathon and all 6 preceding movies had amazing scores. This music just sounded like background noise. No swelling moment for me.
I thought the movie was good but too formulaic.

Did anyone feel the movie moved too fast? That was main complaint. The pacing was relentless and that cuts were so quick. This has to be the lowest average shot length of any Star Wars any movie. Loved the movie otherwise though.
Adam Driver was great and some of the shots during Hans death scene maybe my favorite of the trilogy. Specifically the wide shot of Kylo on the catwalk. His mask is still on and he is barely visible through the darkness.
The next movie needs more Poe Dameron. The new cast was great in general, but Oscar Issac's has so much charisma and there is so much potential for that character. Loved the bit with Kylo during the opening sequence "Okay, I don't know how this works. Which one of us needs to talk first."

yeah, maybe using a real life slaughter of actual children for a Star Wars joke wasn't the best idea
I wished some of the fights had no soundtrack. To me, it plays better with no music and all you can hear is the fight itself and the dialog between the characters.
Also what really sucked was that they went to lengths to show how superior this ship is compared to death stare, then it blows up exactly the same way.

The only thing i disliked was the conclusion.
Rey just overpowered kylo. There was no emotion and no insight.
