[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens - It's True. All of it.

Talking about Rey, if you remember, she'd already dreamed about where Luke was - Ren pulled it out during the interrogation, and that's when she was able to block him. Ren said something about her going there in her dreams as a safe place -- so, she already had a connection to Luke.

So, two random possibilities -- 1) she may have picked up what was possible with the Force when she got into Kylo Ren's head, which he inadvertantly showed her how to do and 2) possibly Luke was training her without her conscious awareness when she visited the island in her dreams.

Sober and a fan of SW for over 30 years. Only part of ANH I liked is any scenes with Obi-Wan and Luke together & Death Star Attack.

TFA > ANH

i understand that. ANH might just be too 'dry' / 'slow' for some

It's also the least "futuristic" of the movies.

Not saying that those are your exact reasons, but there's stuff about ANH that can be detrimental to certain viewers' appreciation.

(ANH>Empire>TFA=RotJ (can't deceive just yet) > who-the-hell-gives-a-shit)

I hope Luke still has some other Jedis with him, I will loose my shit if we see Luke's Jedi V Snoke's Sith.

That what Hayden Christiansen is for, he is the only one that can bring balance to the force, he is is going to take down snoke aka plagueis.

So just back from seeing this with friends. So after Rey touches the lightsaber that little alien woman says to her that it was her grandfathers, her fathers and now she should have it right?

Which then means that Luke is her father.

They really shouldn't have made that "Hey guys we're using practical effects as much as we possibly can!" video.

It seemed like there was a ton of stuff that didn't need to be CG, but was. I don't know why any bipedal humanoid character needs to be CG, really. I guess it's not as bad as the prequels where you can tell the sets don't even exist and they were pasting heads onto CG bodies, but they leaned on CG almost as much as any other of today's blockbusters.

And not just that, but the CG was kind of bad too.

Maz looked off and Snoke didn't look much better.

Bespin supposedly has a liquid core. Someone could have found it during a survey. Though, there's only a handful of people, no pun intended, that know about Luke's saber and his fight with Vader unless that eventually became part of the Skywalker myth.

It's the same saber. When Rey touches it, she has a flashback and kind of travels the history/memories of the saber. One of those places is the hallway on Cloud City.

I liked that part, didn't feel forced unlike some other references via the script.

TFA > ANH

I need to watch ANH today and TFA again, but I agree with you as of right now.

However. The trench run in ANH is still the best action sequence in any SW film. The musical score, the intensity and the uniqueness. Still second to none and this film's Starkiller run doesn't hold a candlestick to ANH's.

That being said, TFA's "trench run" fight was better than ROTJ's.

Looking back, the marketing was weird. Affective, obviously, but did not serve the movie well in some regards. If Phasma hadn't been built up, I don't think she would have been disappointment, but with the way they've been hyping her up I was super bummed out. Haha, I'm sure you spoiler guys have been aware of this months, though.

Actually, how much of this movie was a surprise for those of you that read spoilers?

She wouldn't have been a disappointment but she still would have been a waste of a cool costume. I still think her look is more iconic than Kylo Ren. She did next to nothing and never once felt threatening. They could have kept her screen time the same and have her do some cool things. Boba Fett had a similar amount in ESB and was a clear threat.

The chest-beating or whatever it was was a pretty funny character tick. I'll happily chalk it up to Kylo being his own character

You've never been injured during sports and told to "rub some dirt in it"?

He's in pain, he's not happy about it, he's attempting to beat the pain out of himself...cause enough pain for it to go numb.
Sports. (and lightsaber duals)

That's how I interpreted it.

Luke failed and probably got his wife (Rey's mother) killed along with a bunch of kids under his tutelage. Dude is probably fucked in the head. He then took Rey to Jakku for the force priest to look after because of his completely loss of faith in himself.

Why are you constantly shitting on everything btw? It's coming off pretty trollish.

Thats the only thing that rubbed me the wrong way. Luke knowing stuff was happening and just chilling on some island. I'm sure he felt Han was going to be in danger

I'm not really 100% on this and thought that Rey getting mind trick powers so quickly was a load of crap, this might be part of the "awakening" that Snoke mentioned and that the film is titled after.

Hopefully this was just an introduction to her and her role will be significant in E8.

That scene felt more like Guardians of the Galaxy than Star Wars. Han Solo never needed anything so elaborate in the original to establish his character.

Yeah, it had that goofy, cartoon-like violence that you'd find in GotG. Also disappointing to see The Raid crew being used for that scene, although I'll chalk that one up to the internet getting way too hyped over a minor casting detail.

The bottom of cloud city isn't bottomless so it likely wouldn't have fallen into Bespin. If you're talking about the piece of detritus that falls past Luke when he lands on the weater vane it is not supposed to be his saber. It's a broken piece of weather vane (even says so in the script)

Care to give examples? The only notable CG creatures were those tentacle monsters.

Mo-capped actors used for the New Order leader (Snokes?) and the bug-eyed lady that ran Cantina 2.0 (Maas?).

Some of the less elaborate destruction scenes could have been sets or models, but it looks like they went with CG for most of it. I'd be curious though how many models were used and where they were used. I imagine all the vehicle battles are CG rather than models.

The tentacle monsters were just a disappointment. I felt like they could have come up with a monster design that was appropriately intimidating but capable of doing with a combination of practical effects and a "less is more" Jaws-style cinematography. Part of what sucks about CG is that there's this impulse filmmakers get where they belive should show everything in extensive and incredible detail, just because they can. So everything becomes this gratuitous monster-fest, rather than leaving some sort of mystery where your imagination makes it terrifying.

To be fair, the last line, while hyperbolic, holds plenty of truth to it.
The fact that i've heard people saying "well, yeah, the female protagonist is clearly a hunger games ripoff" is just baffling.

As if having a strong, independent female protagonist is some sort of 'trope' and not something that should happen in 50% of movies that don't require their protagonist to be male.

The contrast between ANH and TFA with regards to ethnic and gender representation is almost unbelievable.

Hell, Leia is tough as nails in ANH. Even if she's a "damsel" by virtue of being a prisoner, she talks shit to everyone in the film, including (and especially) Vader and Tarkin, lies to their faces, and doesn't give in to any torture. She more or less commandeers the rescue mission at one point even.

Though yeah, it's basically just one white woman in the film as far as diversity goes.

Did Vader's mask stay on the Starkiller Base when it exploded, or was that scene with Kylo Ren talking to it on his shuttle? Wondering if that artifact is gone forever.

Oh wow, so pretty much the plot in its entirety leaked out.

Seemed like a clear way to redeem her is have her be the Stormtrooper Finn fights at Maz's place. I'm sure she'll be back and badder in VIII, but still cannot believe what a non-character she is.

It's mildly hilarious watching facebook friends freak out about "spoilers" when it's shit that's been in the trailers (they've seen) and has been talked about in big articles in huge publications. I have not spoiled anything but people seem to think that me posting a picture of the Knights of Ren is THE BIGGEST THPOILER OF ALL TIME!

Movie had a downright dark tone at times. The beginning for some reason even made me a little uneasy, they certainly went out of their way to portray the storm troopers early on as a credible threat,5$47 were menacing and brutal even... And that bloody hand print on Finns helmet was a bit of a shock moment, like "hey yea, we are doing something different here"- the precious 8 movies were pretty much bloodless, and that stark contrast between the white and red hit hard in my opinion.

And the light saber fight at the end really showed how brutal a light saber can be... All the smaller cuts and stabs and burns, precious digits caused damage for sure obviously but it was always so clean, there was a level of street fight I this that felt just dirtier overall. Definitely raised the threat level.

So I watched the IMDB board and the hate was strong. I was quite amazed at the comments. I loved the movie. I'd probably rate them: episode 5 > 7 > 4 > 3 > 6 > 2 >1.

I liked all the new characters. I'm thinking that Pop is a son of Luke or something due to their common skills as pilots. Rey is clearly Luke's as well, but shared the skywalker trait of being a good mechanic.

My biggest issue I suppose, is the sun in the end lol. I've seen people complaining that the rebel base shouldn't have been able to see the destruction of those planets due to distance, but meh.minor detail in an otherwise good movie.

Some people hated the fact that it's a lot like the ANH, but to me it's a re-imagination of it while continuing the story.

Next year it's Rogue One so I'm pumped.

The marketing didn't build her up, the fanbase did. She gave a very direct interview that says she didn't do much during this film, but she'd have a much larger role in the next. Let's be honest, Boba Fett didn't do much, either lol

Man, if the cast and characters in this film weren't excellent, it would be a wholly mediocre movie, I think. The actors really make the most of what they're given. I think the two most "rushed" aspects are Rey's development (especially her Force powers) and the Solo kid/parents drama.

Thankfully, Daisy Ridley is fucking fantastic. We'd never believe Luke could pull these things off because I don't think Hamill had the ability to do so in A New Hope. Ridley sells the shit out of it.

The Solo/Organa/Ben angle isn't given a whole lot of time and isn't even presented as a big reveal, but it's one of my favorite aspects of the film--again, just rooted in the performances. I haven't seen Han Solo in *years* but I absolutely believe that he still loves his son and just wants him to come home.

Can't really ask for more than "unique and memorable characters" from a Star Wars movie. The retreading here worked because the characters work. That doesn't excuse how contrived or cute the movie can get, but it works in spite of those things. I imagine Jurassic World would have gotten more praise, critically, if the characters were half as charming and fun to watch as those in TFA.

Kagari! That spoiler is still up in the Trump thread. You banned the troll but you didnt move the spoilers! You banned the troll but you didn't move the spoilers!!!!!

What's the problem with Snoke and Maz being mocapped? It's a fine way to use talented actors without covering them in makeup that restricts their facial expressions and allows for non-human proportions.

seeing as Luke staring at the twin suns is a moment that makes me tear up just THINKING about it makes ANH my unbeatable favourite. The trench run is fantastic, though i actually prefer the (space)battle of Endor. My all time favourite.

The issue with Empire as a singular movie is that it's really the "2nd part of a trilogy", "first part of a double feature"
It's fantastic, has the best music (Asteroid field), but it's really hard for me to tell how much i'd like it without watchint RotJ shortly after.

force sensitive beings use the force constantly without knowing it, or knowing why. we've seen this through EVERY story in the universe, both canon and expunged EU.

it's right int he first god damn movie "the force guides us"

What was it in the EU? I basically burst into tears when I heard that. It said so much about Han's feelings at the time of his son's birth about the significance of the force.

Also, I'm biased.

;D

He wasnt named after Obi Wan he was named after Gentle Ben

So Carrie Fisher was CG, right? I mean shit, the years haven't been kind to her. She was a proper hottie as well.

She did have a bad drug problem in the past and that surely took a toll. She admitted even being on drugs during the shooting of Empire and how her mother had Cary Grant call her about the issues.

Had I slight feeling Han Solo was going to die. Even before seeing the movie. I was watching a QA panel with the actors. Kathleen Kennedy mentioned that "these guys will start shooting for episode 8 in January", making a motion to the actors of Finn and Rey who were sitting on her right.....Harrison Ford was sitting to her left. Ahhh shit! lol.

Still...LOVED the movie. Loved that there was no spoken line at the very end too and that you saw Luke knew everything that happened simply by looking at Rey. Hamill's reaction was perfect. I teared up. Luke and I shared the same exact look when it cut back to him. Hahaha.

exactly.

The issue isn't Leia. The issue is that there's just Leia.
and a bunch of old white dudes.

The fans didn't help, but the marketing, more so interviews and such, definitely did set an expectation. I may be misremembering, but I think JJ said Gwendolyn gave his favorite performance in the movie.

Get out here with that shit.

I still loved the movie, I just think she could've been a cool introduction in VIII. Even if she becomes a badass, our first lengthy scene with her is still her getting strong-armed into lowering shields and being thrown into a garbage chute off screen.
