Watching the film again tonight I'm gonna be looking out for the cinematography in the dialogue, the pacing in the second act, and how effective the Star Killer Base's role is in the film i.e. everything I thought was relatively weaker.

Also, anyone else notice the match cut between Finn putting his helmet back on and Rey? It's a shame they didn't do this for Kylo too although I may have missed it. All three main characters start with their faces obscured and end as a recognizable face, especially if Kylo lost his mask.

Can anyone tell me who Snoke is? Like, I get that he's "the new emperor" or whatever, but are there any hints or explanations to how he became in charge of the First Order that I have missed in there?

I knew I was gonna love this movie as soon as Poe started talking to Kylo. It's amazing how much I can laugh and enjoy these characters. The ultimate pallete cleanser from the Prequels.

There was a lot of debate as to whether the empire was racist towards other species. Some people said it was a limitation of the budget and technology at the time. Did the first order have any alien races? Besides Snoke.

This movie had a number of shots that are up there amongst the most beautiful in the SW series.

My favorite possibly being the Tie Fighters against the setting sun.

I love that scene too. The TIE fighters are just silhouettes which makes them look so much cooler.

It's like the dark and the light in one shot. Beautiful.

I wonder if he's been in some kind of recuperative hibernation or something. Like he got seriously jacked, took a wipe out as it were, but didn't die all the way.

And the the left side of his face looks like he just got punched by Genos...

I'm still looking for a quality shot of Rey with her X Wing helmet on.

Because it's in a supplemental text book that you can buy today after the movie came out.

Anyone claiming that the movie 100% makes it clear is reading too much into the movie. 5 planets were destroyed in the movie. They barely talk about them. They're the center of government in the New Republic (a role held by Coruscant previously). They do not list the 5 planets names. One of the pictures they gave of the planets could've definitely been Coruscant. You have to have extra-movie knowledge to be 100% sure it's not Coruscant.

They say in the movie that it was the Hosnian system. If it were Coruscant, they would've said the Couruscant system, or Couruscant.

Coruscant is a big enough deal that, if it were blown up, its name would've found its way into the movie somewhere.

Favourite shots:

-Rey putting on the pilot helmet whilst having dinner by herself.
-Rey climbing those walls inside of starkiller.
-Rey and Finn looking at Kylo from up high after he kills Han.
-Rey overpowering Kylo and pushing his lightsaber into ground.

Pretty much all Rey scenes. Guys, I...I don't know what is happen. I fucking loved Rey so much.

That fucking opening shot tho. Why is no one talking about it. As iconic as the opening shot in the OT

Are we sure Snoke is an alien? He could be but he could also be a very mangled human, if the hologram is what he really looked like.

It's the little things I enjoy the most about Star Wars movies, like that weird hammer head creature that looked at BB-8 rolling by. So awesome.

Just saw it. Loved it. I went into it having been spoiled about Kylo being Han's son and Kylo killing him, but that did nothing to ruin the movie for me. Thankfully they don't really try to draw out the reveal of Han being his father, they basically start alluding towards it from the beginning.

The beginning was really weird. I think the movie has some growing pains in a way. Either that, or it took my brain a little while to adjust to the idea of Star Wars camp in a 2015 film with JJ Abrams styling. but once I got past all that, the movie just clicked with me. I embraced the camp and from then on I loved it.

The only negative thing I came out of the theater thinking is that I thought Finn's arc is a little clunky at the beginning. He sees the stormtroopers do some bad shit, and then is INSTANTLY against all of it. I hope they expand a little bit on why he's sort of predisposed to be against the new order, since he's been trained since birth just like all the other storm troopers. We don't really have an idea of what makes him different. but I still thought he was great.

I have a friend who was basically just regurgitating all the shit he read on /tv/ about the plot being a rehash, so I was paying attention to that stuff the whole way through. A lot of the set pieces are basically the same, yeah, but I think it handles it really well. It's a bit too much to call them nods to A New Hope, since it's a structural thing, but what I like about it is that it introduces our new characters into the same situations that we've seen before. It serves to set up these characters way better for the future movies because we know how they differ from the characters in the OT. They may have similar archetypes, but they come into their own in a great way.

My theory on Snoke:

He is Plagueis, the one who trained Palpatine. Plagueis the Wise faked his death and used Palpatine as an unwitting pawn. Plagueis secretly paved the way for Palpatine's conquest AND the rebel victories in the OT, having the Empire's rise and fall orchestrated according to plan.

Yep, Ridley absolutely nailed it. Also love her expressions, like when she was chasing Finn.

Which? If the destroyer passing the moon?

I'd say I am mildly satisfied with the movie. While I am all for fan service I did feel that it was handled poorly often times and kind of hokey in a not charming way. Along with some other nitpicks and yet again recycled plot points, it was still a solid movie. Maybe a 7 out of 10 experience overall but I like where the potential is going and imagine an 8 and 9 could be viewed as much better (and this one being elevated for the setup)

It did wash away the blandness and sterile feeling of the prequel movies however, and for that it is an overall success.

What score would you give TPM sir?

2?

Hey, Scientist Supreme. My responses are in the bold areas. I trimmed out a few areas I didn't have anything to comment about.

General Stuff:
~ The coincidences in this movie are pretty crazy. I can take Finn and Poe crashing so close to Rey is and finding the falcon on jakku but Han taking them old friend who just happens to have Luke's light saber for reason. Come on.

Coincidences are kind of a "thing" in Star Wars. Like how Luke, the son of Vader, just happens to stumble upon 3PO and R2D2 as they have the Death Star plans (and even needed a droid to break down in order to get R2). Or how the Millenium Falcon, with no hyperdrive and not very far away from Hoth, just happens to be in range of Lando. Or how Obi-Wan and Luke just happen to stumble upon one of the fastest ships in the Galaxy in Mos Eisely. I'm okay with an old friend of Han's who's Yoda-tier in age coming across Anakin's lightsaber.

~ That last scene was weird and unintentionally funny. Rey and Luke just staring at each other with Rey extending her hand. So weird. Should have end with the close up on Rey's face.
~ Another single weak point on the super weapon where it somehow blows up the entire planet. Really?

Things with giant energy sources usually end up having a giant exploitable weakness. It seems like with each new version of the Death Star the weakness gets bigger too.

~ Han's death didn't do anything for me. Mostly because it was completely telegraphed and didn't any emotional because we don't know the relationship between these two characters fully. Instead of feeling emotional I thought "yeah fuck Han, continue being awesome Kylo"

Just because a death is telegraphed doesn't make it any less significant. It wasn't meant to really shock in the sense that "oh god Han died" it was more meant to establish that Kylo Ren isn't going to be redeemed like Vader. Honestly Han and Kylo's relationship on screen wasn't any more developed than Obi-Wan and Vader's relationship in A New Hope.

~ All the action scenes were fine but nothing more. I wasn't invested in any of it. Some kinda boring.
~ I also found the light saber fight to be kinda short and dull. Besides Kylo beating his chest their was nothing special or exciting about it.

Kylo wasn't beating his chest just for the sake of it. He was trying to shake off the pain of the giant wound Chewbacca put on him after he killed Solo.

~ Some weird moments between Rey and Finn like asking if she has a boyfriend or when Finn was going to take off in Maz's castle. That conversation just felt weird for people who haven't even know each other for a day.

Questions:
1) Starkiller Base. What a strange inclusion. I know it's there to be the deathstar superweapon that all the heroes need to blow up but what was it purpose? Was it Snoke's ultimate weapon to destroy the republic? Why did they fire it at those planet? Why did the not expect The Resistance to attack?

The attacked that planet because it was the current headquarters of the Republic. They weren't expecting the Resistance to attack because the Resistance didn't know about Starkiller base until Finn told them.

2) What's the state of Republic? I think I heard something about Republic sending General Leia to lead a resistance in the First Order territory. Did anybody heard something similar?

Opening crawl talks about the basics of the First Order, Republic, and Resistance. I think they kept the New Republic stuff on the down low to avoid boring Senate/political stuff like in the prequels

3) Why did Luke go through all this map bullshit? If he didn't want to be found why leave a map? He had to know The First Order would kill to find his location, right? Was he waiting to Rey was ready? This whole movie is his fault for being the typical cryptic Jedi asshole.

The movie goes out of its way to establish that Rey has some kind of connection to the Skywalker family (See: everything about how Rey got tons of visions from Anakin/Luke's lightsaber and is super Force sensitive). It's entirely possible that Rey could be related to Luke and Luke went into hiding until Rey was ready, similar to Obi-Wan and Luke's relationship in ANH

4) Are they really not going to explain how Maz got Anakin's light saber? Also why didn't she tell Han she had it?

Why do we need to know how Anakin's lightsaber got retrieved? Luke survived falling into a giant pit in Bespin, so I think the audience can just accept that the lightsaber landed somewhere and was found.

Characters:
Disappointing.
~General Hux and Supreme Leader Snoke are evil bad people! How interesting!

Did you have the same lack of feeling about Tarkin in ANH and Palpatine in ROTJ? Because that's exactly what they are as well.

Overall
As disappointing as I feared.

I liked it and would see it again.

Stuff i didn't like..

-Kylo lost his evil mystique(aura) once the mask was removed.
-Not enough Saber fights.

PS:Episode 1 still has the best Light Saber fights..

Are we sure Snoke is an alien? He could be but he could also be a very mangled human, if the hologram is what he really looked like.

He's reportedly seven feet tall in person, so he'd be a very oddly proportioned human if he was one.

Really though, I hope Snoke has not one thing to do with known evil force traditions up to this point. Let him be a new malignancy from beyond known space or something. Or maybe he was an evil force sensitive individual that survived the Empire's witch hunts and just kept his head down till Luke dealt with his Sith problem. The joy of finally moving forward is we don't have to rope things back into known quantities like Palpatine and his dumb master.
