Driver's an unconventional looking guy but I wouldn't say he's ugly. It's nice to have a big budget film not filled with Disney princesses for once.

i agree the guy is definately not ugly.
The similarities to a new hope are large but purposeful. They needed to wash the bad taste of the the prequels out of everyone's mouth and remind people about how awesome star wars is.

i liked the prequels thank you

I think one of the best things about this movie was that it mostly lacked shitty, annoying characters.

Episode I had Jar Jar, of course. Episode VI had Ewoks. And every other episode had way too much C-3P0, who is fucking terrible and I don't understand how he gets a pass by fans of the OT.

This movie had some C-3P0, which was awful, but it was significantly less C-3P0 than any other movie except maybe Episode I, which was nice.

What about this thread, which GAFers chided Carrie Fisher for complaining about losing weight because moviegoers want all their stars to be attractive?

yeah I just watched the first 6 and I find it hard to follow where Anakin's saber goes. I thought the same thing.

Probably he uses like three of them in II.

But Anakin uses a blue lightsaber in III, Obi-Wan takes it with him after leaving him to burn to death, gives it to Luke in IV, then Luke loses in V when Vader cuts his hand off. We don't know how it made its way from Bespin to Maz yet.

Is it ironic that my wife is super into Disney and Disney Princesses?

I mean, we went to Disneyland Paris as part of our honeymoon for God's sake...

He's ugly my wife said if too - she expected someone more menacing and threatening looking

Not every dark side character needs to fit the same mold of being frightening looking.. Kylo's character is that of a tortured young man, and I think his appearance looked the part perfectly.

How the hell did they not know about it? How did they not have any Intel? Why the hell are they even a Resistance? Leia was a diplomat in the senate in ANH. Why do they operate in secret? What is their relationship to the galactic republic? Why does the New Order have a Starkiller but seemingly only ONE Star Destroyer? The movie is inadequate in establishing any of this. I guess we'll have to wait for the sequel. JJ mystery box in full effect

Yeah the movie does a poor job at establishing this (as some of said they may have been scared off by the political focus on the prequels) but the New Republic isn't a particularly powerful government, at least from a military standpoint. The First Order may even be considered a legitimate, if completely fascist, government as well. After the Empire I'm not sure the Republic actually wants to try and enforce that every single region in the galaxy MUST fall under their governance. So the Resistance is a group inside the regions the First Order controls that is fighting back but lacks the resources of a true military.

It's kind of supposed to be like real world politics where the US may not be willing to commit direct military forces against a regime that we don't like but we will instead try to give covert assistance to resistance groups inside that country instead.

As for Leia, since her son is currently working for the First Order it isn't' surprising that she would give up any diplomatic or government role she may have had to go work with the Resistance.

C3PO is annoying but he fleshes out the universe as a bystanding commentator/narrator.

To settle the dumb arm thing, see how as it rotates that section is thinner?

yeah I just watched the first 6 and I find it hard to follow where Anakin's saber goes. I thought the same thing.

That's why it's surprising that it turns up with Maz, it was presumed lost after Bespin.

I do hope they explain how the hell they found Luke/Anakin's saber.

I really hope they don't. Not every little question needs to be answered, just take it as the will of the Force.

So, I think most people agree that TFA was a pretty flawed but still largely enjoyable Star Wars film?

I think you're stretching with "most" thinking it's "flawed".

For me, Ren is a villain who's a total wimp but in the best possible way. Whereas in most cases you'd be annoyed someone his type, you instead pity him to an extent.

Hell, sometimes you're even amused by his insecurity. You're just "awwwww look at that Vader poser. Yes you are Vader! Oh yes you are."

It's the whole point!

He has NO reason to put on the mask other than being more menacing.

protection, and all troopers wear them. Boba Fett didn't need it for breathy but he still wore a helmet.

LOL this.

My only real complaint is that Snoke looks almost exactly like Voldemort.

Other than that, a really solid modern Star Wars. Some fans are going to take issue with the movie not "feeling" like Star Wars, but I don't take this series seriously enough to care.

Saw this last night, and for the most part, I liked it a lot. Han and Chewie were awesome, the new attracters were great. Really liked Poe especially. He looks like he's set to be the new Han in my opinion. Rey was good too, and I liked Finn, but not as much as the others. Ending was good, leaving you wanting more, which is exactly where I was when I left the theater. I didn't want the film to be over, because it had felt like it has been a long time since I'd visited the Star Wars universe, at least in the form that we knew it from the original trilogy.

Now, all of that said, there was a lot of things I didn't like about the movie too. I'll go through those a bit more here:

- The new super-weapon was super-dumb. It was like they were trying to one-up the Death Star, but in the dumbest way possible. In a galaxy that has determined that faster than light travel is needed to go anywhere, somehow this thing is able to shoot every beams across vast distances in a matter of seconds or minutes. How? And why could Han and the gang see those other planets being destroyed from a completely different system? It reminded me of how Kirk could see Vulcan being destroyed in Abram's Star Trek movie, even though he was on another planet in a another system. I hated it then, I hate it now. So stupid.

- I know there has been a lot of debate about how Rey, and especially Finn, could stand up to Kylo in a saber duel. Clearly there is something going on with Rey that we don't understand yet, so I'll kind of reserve judgement on that. But Finn should have been wiped out in no time flat. A lightsaber is not an easy weapon to wield, and for anyone to pick it up and start using it right away, it could be more dangerous to them than to an enemy. Remember how clumsy Luke was with it at first. And I know, some people are arguing that Kylo might not be all that good, which definitely could be true. But as someone who has trained with swords in martial arts classes, I can tell you that the difference between someone who has had some training, and someone who just just picked up a weapon for the first time, is vast.

- I wasn't a fan of how much this mirrored A New Hope in terms of themes and storylines, right down to a Death Star-esque trench run, a cantina scene, and droid carrying vital information. I wish they would have come up with something a bit more original.

- I could have used a bit more background information sprinkled in as well. Where did the First Order come from? What as the Republic and the Resistance been up to for the past 30 years? How did Anakin's lightsaber, that was given to Luke, come to be re-found? For big Star Wars fans, those things are not inconsequential.

Overall, as I said, I really enjoyed it. It felt good to see the old gang back up on the screen and part of the story. I'll see it in the theater at least one or two more times, and I can't wait for the story to continue.

I feel like the film is an exact remake of the first and second film. Which I don't mind, because now we can safely use TFA as the benchmark - as THE film - to introduce anyone to Star Wars. I don't think going back to older films will ever be the same, since this one has all the tropes, archetypes, and music that made the originals special, but now with competitive VFX and production design.

Higely entertaining. I already have my tickets for tonight an tomorrow.

exactly, it's a remastered Greatest Hits

Now, if Ep VIII is the same... it'll be disappointing

I think saying "This doesn't feel like star wars" is the most impossible criticism to make.
It's Space Swashbuckling 101. It's A New Hope right there. It's the most Star Wars thing they could make, bad points included.

Does anyone else think they missed the boat on the Jedi Academy spinoff movie that would show the backstory between Luke Skywalker and Ben Solo and how he became Kylo Ren? They already have the next four movies planned and Hammil isn't getting any younger.

Or is it a story that should be talked about in the main movies and not have a whole movie devoted to it?

A lot of the people tearing apart the story would be surprised if they examined A New Hope with the same level of criticism.

Aye.

Pre Extended edition:
"Who's 'Jabba the Hutt' ?"
"Why doesn't the death star just blow up Yavin instead of circling around?"
"Who's the emperor?"
"Why is Luke so bummed out that Han doesn't join the rebellion? He hardly even knows the guy, and they don't seem to be compatible on a personal level AT ALL. Han doesn't care about right or wrong. Also he'd be competing with him for Leia. That relationship seems super rushed"
"If we were meant to care about Alderaan, why haven't they shown us at least how it / its people look like?"
"What are the 'clone wars'"
"Who's Tank"

I was initially disappointed with the way Kylo looked without the mask, not regarding handsomeness or lack thereof, but how he looked very non-threatening and rather awkward.

But then I realized that he was basically a scared child, kind of a "dark lord poser" without that much control over his powers and I thought it was actually a good choice.

Agreed. My first comment at movie's end was "that was a Star War ass Star Wars movie. That was the most Star Wars thing I've seen in a long time"

WHERE IS THE DROID?
WHERE IS THE DROID?
FIND ME THE DROID
HAVE YOU FOUND THE DROID?
WHERE IS THE DROID?
WHERE IS THE MAP?
FIND ME THE MAP?

And then his dialogue with Han and Rey being the only time where he wasn't asking for the location of the map. The only time he stood out as an interesting character was his powerfully emotive exchange with his father at the end.

While this is true, I enjoyed it for the first half or so of the movie. It felt JJish with everything set to hyperdrive and moving at a brisk pace. Also the entire bit with Han's smuggler freighter felt like the freshest thing in the movie. The look, the boarding, the animals, dare I say it? It felt kinda Star Trek-ian.

Up to this point I was ok with the rehashing, but after this point, it got annoying because too little new elements were introduced.

No it isn't, you can even see it rotate in the gif, that bit of the arm is thinner than the rest.

It's not clipping through the cover. The arm things even more at that spot, then gets bigger again where the lighter is. Can't believe people are arguing over this.

By the look of the guy's face (and height), she should know he's probably hung. Tell her that.

You guys are blind.

It does not get bigger where the lighter is. The red outline is the cover and it fits like a puzzle.

Here's the arm tilted 90 degrees while the cover is still in the same place.

Yeah. I mean, at first I obviously noticed that the movie started with a droid getting some sort of secret information and then is abandoned to fend for itself in a desert planet, just like ANH. I thought that was cute, I liked that actually. But at some point, it does become too much.

Would the movie be more different from ANH if the Death Star was, let's say, a huge device designed to send out a pulse that kills all force sensitives in the galaxy?
In the end it doesn't matter what the giant evil weapon is. It could be anything.

What matters is that the characters are new, their motivations are different from the old crew and they feel fresh. That 'synopsis' ignores all the events that have no analogue in ANH and oversimplifies by saying Kylo Ren is Vader and Rey is Luke, despite their characters being wildly different.

Star Wars will always have a bad guy, so all SW movies will always have a Vader. There will always be an evil faction, so there will always be an 'empire'. There's likely always going to be an even bigger bad guy in the shadows, an emperor. There will always be a protagonist, a Luke. Likely always a wise mentor or two, an Obi-Wan (Han in this one, Luke in the next one). Aerial battles will happen, similar to the attack on the Death Star in ANH.

You will never get a Star Wars movie that has no similarities to the OT.

I really can't agree with what you're saying. You're minimizing the similarities the movie has to ANH.
