Also wished Finn had some kind of moment at the end.
He got the Starkiller base shield shut off and bought enough time for Rey to recover and fight Kylo Ren.

Whatever happened to this dude in some gothic castle? I thought it looked really cool.

Yeah, I sort of forgot that after a few minutes.
Another thing I really liked was how dorky Rey and Finn were at times. Also really enjoyed the melee fight between that enhanced Stormtrooper and Finn. He be like: " Come at me, bro."

Absolutely badass.
Loved it!
I think the biggest surprise was Kylo Ren, who were an emotionally unstable Sith-wannabe kid, instead of the a proper Sith Lord like Maul, Dooku, or Vader. He put on a mask just to be more Vader-ish.
Did they really oversell it? He wasnt shown in any of the marketingYou don't need to use spoiler tags. You're in the spoiler thread.
I'll go back and catch up, but Luke in TFA has to be one of the bigger cases of over selling a character's appearance. I really thought he was going to have a bigger role - or at least some role - in the film. Nearly everything about the ending scene didn't work for me: Luke and Rey should have exchanged words before she held out the lightsaber. And the orbiting closing shot was something that worked much better in concept than execution: it looked exactly like a helicopter flying in a circle around two actors standing on a large rock. It was the least effective closing shot in the series (and I'm including the prequels here).
I couldn't believe Luke got second billing in the closing credits. :lol
Thoughts?
The new characters had so many good scenes. One of my favorite ones was the joyful facial expression Rey gave to Han, when she bypassed that-one-thing on Falcon.

Are people seriously arguing the logistics of BB-8s lighter? Overthinking stuff to the max, bros.
Disagree. Best scene in the entire movie. No words needed. Luke's face says: I know who you are, I know why you're here, I dont know if I can do it.
i still don't get why he initially enters the BOTTOM turret when they're flying super low. Wouldn't the top turret be better suited?
Agree.
The movie needed a bit more breathing room and adding some scenes like that would've helped.
Han's tragic mind set should've had a scene dedicated to it to make the outcome way more tragic. Something like Solo finding on the Falcon an old photo of him, Leia and Ben in happier times to contrast his fall back into doing mercenary work trying to survive day to day. It felt too straight forward. Especially with Han wanting Rey by his side to fill the void Ben left.
Also, I know the Death Star was just a Macguffin to help drive the story but showing how dangerous and terrifying it is instead of relying on the audience knowing about the other ones. There was just one reaction shot of the people on that planet to emotionally cling on to. That and the tension of it being ready to fire. It was missing a few beats here and there for the momentum of the climax to reach its peak.
But I guess they wanted to put emphasis on Solo's final moment.
Really well done but there's some problems with the story here and there that are missing some beats to make them fully work.
She did an awful job in comparison to Ford.
More filler crap is never a good thing. Film's perfect as it is.
I know all the old EU books are non-canon now, but is there anything out or coming out book-wise considered official storyline? I'd like to read some to satisfy my SW cravings right now.

No, there were two they showed on the bridge of Ren's ships. They weren't shown anywhere else in the movie. Their helmets were just pure white and it looked scary.
Loved it!

Definitely not going to read through 300+ pages but what did everyone think? I've been a huge SW fan since I was a little kid, midnight screenings at all prequels etc.
I thought VII was very very good. Yes it was partially a remake of IV, but I think it served as a fantastic new entry to the next trilogy. Was it perfect? No, but it did a lot of things right. I also liked Kylo Ren much more than I expected to. He was immature, whiny and emotional but given how much dark side users are encouraged to give in to emotions such as jealousy, hate, selfishness, it totally made sense for a young, untrained Jedi/potential Sith to fully go down this road, and I thought it was handled quite well.
Thoughts?

So do we just find it easier to nitpick certain things than talk about stuff we liked? The car ride home from the theater with my friends was the exact same way even though we all loved the movie, so I'm genuinely curious.
Reading this thread it feels like Gaf really did not like the movie, is this going to be another MGSV, Avatar, Jurrassic World type of thing on Gaf?
I understand the nitpicks. But I had a fucking blast. And it was a dream come true to be watching a brand new Star Wars movie.
So, what were actual opinions around here? Love? Hate? Disappointment?

According to what I can gather
Prequels - Clones
Post-prequels to OT - Not Clones - recruited. (still dunno the reason to that. I just know that's the case. Care to fill me in SW GAF?)
Right now - born and raised treatment

He's lost even more weight after shooting TFA, so that was a bit of a hint that he had a very tiny presence in the movie. I almost expected him not to show up.True. But Hamil was very active in the marketing outside of the trailers, and got second billing behind Ford on the theatrical poster. Before it came out a lot of us just assumed they were holding back. Nope. :lol

that would give everyone the worst blue balls in recorded history. not even allowed to see luke til 2017? people would be really upset.I kinda wish the film would have ended on Falcon taking off. They could have just showed Luke meditating on the temple, or just not show him at all yet to bring in more suspense.
Damn, that looks cool.
I need to go back and catch up on all the leaks that happened, and see how it changed and took shape.
I went to see this with a friend on thursday we've been talking about it non stop. I was talking to my GF about the original trilogy and casually told her Han Solo died, she slapped me in the face, then I realized she had not seen it, I almost cried for spoiling that to her, she says she didnt care much about it, still excited to see it with me on sunday.
I still feel like shi though.

It's really interesting to check out now how different Kylo Ren was originally.

Does anybody have links to some of the fan art made when it was speculated that this mechanical guy was Luke? I remember when that got reported as THE twist.
This. There was also some SICK shots in the final battle. My top one being a shot from a fixed camera inside the cockpit of an X-wing, it felt so damn real. That was the best thing about the dogfights, they didn't feel like CG things flying around, they had a real 'weight' and impact about them. Very different from the prequels and their "throw as much crap on the screen as possible" approach to dogfights.Poe wreaking havok above Maz Kanata's castle was, IMO, the best scene involving an X-wing in any Star Wars movie yet.
Only if you somehow missed the hundreds of sites hosting the images of Adam in the helmetless Kylo suit that had been around months prior to release.
Driver is 9 years older than Ridley and according to Visual Guide Rey is 19 years old. I can't see Kylo being only 19.So is Rey to be Ben's brother?
Twins run in the sky walker family.
Is it widely agreed that the best scene was the Han/Ren confrontation?
I don't know if this is for certain but... I would think there's a limitation on how many clones they could make since Jango was killed.
It's shown that by the time Star Wars Rebels (the new cartoon show) happens, they're recruiting actual humans. Star Wars Rebels takes place after Revenger of the Sith but before A New Hope.
There's also three books post RotS and Pre-Rebels, so perhaps the specific reasoning is discussed in one of those?
When Han says "that is an amazing pilot" during that seen, I got chills.Poe wreaking havok above Maz Kanata's castle was, IMO, the best scene involving an X-wing in any Star Wars movie yet.
As much as I'm in the "movie was at its best when it was focusing only on the new people" crowd, I wish Leia was given a little more to do.
Also wished Finn had some kind of moment at the end.
