yeah it honestly caught me off guard too
Weird thing was the Makingstarwars leaks indicated a scene were Finn deflects blasters with the Saber (something only someone who has the force can do), and Maz being impressed by Finn.
There's a pretty decent short story about him which is pretty much a space western called high noon on Jakku.

The EU had some force Jesus highs and rancor shit lows.
Just watched the movie yesterday with friends, overall liked it, but felt relationships were built to fast. Minor nitpicks are, don't like anything about Kylo Ren and how their positioning him and the main bad guy looks so bland, wish he was weird colorful alien instead of lord Voldemort knock off.

Rey, the one that came back when Han didn't...there's a connection there. Could be that Rey felt like Han was the father she never had and that Han was the love of Leia's life.
My money is on Leia knowing something, though. She knows how the Force works, and is pretty familiar with the whole "search your feelings" thing.

Think of it like blunt force trauma.
We have it demonstrated to us earlier that a shot from the crossbow is enough to launch a storm trooper into the air with the impact.
Even if the laser/bolt cauterized, it's likely it did some major blunt trauma. Plus, all that fighting would easily open up a wound.
I feel like it's fairly clear that Finn is the Han Solo character of this trilogy. The kind of charming rogue who has amazing chemistry with everyone and holds things together. That character shouldn't have Force powers. Part of what makes the character type work is that he's a "normal" surrounded by all these uber-powerful weirdos.

Went to see this again yesterday. I don't go to the cinema much as it is but to go see the same film more than once is something rare. I really did enjoy it.
I watched Episodes 1-6 a couple years ago but started watching them again. They make a bit more sense to me now but I've just finished A New Hope and it feels like they've just based TFA on that.
ANH: Leia puts the death star plans into a droid to return to the rebels
TFA: Poe puts the map to Luke in a droid to return to the resistance.
ANH: a lot of action with Han Solo (first movie) /Chewbacca/Millennium Falcon
TFA: a lot of action with Han Solo (last movie) /Chewbacca/Millennium Falcon
ANH: the empire are on a big planet which is used as a weapon.
TFA: the first order are on an even bigger planet which is also used as a weapon.
ANH: Darth Vadar
TFA: Kylo Ren who wants to be just like Darth Vadar.
ANH: the weapon is destroyed by x-wing fighters while flying through the trench

I'm not hating on TFA but after rewatching ANH it just feels a bit..cheaper. I really can't wait to see what happens with all the new character's and old too over the course of the trilogy but I do wish the plot was a bit more original.

Maybe you are finding excuses to nitpick, or did you do this as well at the end of New hope and Luke somehow getting away from the Death Star. That was seconds as well.

Unless they include some sort of clock into the scene. Maybe they should have had the destruction of the Starkiller Base take place from the POV of one of the pilots and included a little clock in the bottom corner of their visor, so the audience knows how much time passes

Chewie who was in mid flight when he discovered Rey and an injured Fin (by the edge of a small cliff), had to re land the Millennium Falcon, get out, find Rey and Fin, pick Fin up, drop him in the sick bay, and then fly out of there.

Yeah which is why I tend to support the idea she is either from Leia or Luke and still the grandchild of Anakin.

They would have to be some kind of plasma or mass effect like weapons.
That's interesting.
I mean, physically you can deflect shots if you aren't force-sensitive. But it's highly improbable.

Movie makers probably intentionally leave things like clocks out of the picture to give them wiggle room.
This had to be the hardest movie ever to make as far as paying fan service and not messing it up. There's no doubt JJ Abrams went ultra conservative with the story line and played it safe. Can't hate on him for that. I think we'll get a little more deviation in Episodes VIII and IX but all this movie needed to do was bring Star Wars back in a popular and pleasing fashion which it did. It did a great job of setting everything up in a safe way.
I said earlier ITT that I think TFA was really a love letter to A New Hope, and that Episode 8 is going to go crazy and really build the franchise.
Episode 8, imo, is going to be the one to really take the 'Star Wars' name and make it its own. I think crazy things are going to happen. I think it's going to be far more unusual and traumatic than TFA, and I don't think it will be very like any of the previous SW movies.
This is the vibe I get coming off the core theme of TFA - that the Star Wars world is changing, and bad things are going to happen. We get lots of tantalising nods to the past, but with Han's death, it's clear that's over.

FIFY. TFA was more of an amalgamation of all three original movies. The destruction of star killer is more like RotJ because poe goes inside.

My money is still on Rey being the sole survivor of the Jedi Camp, with Luke rescuing her, sealing up her memories and hiding her on Jakku until she was "ready" to take on the dark side. She would be unusually strong in the force or something which is why after Kylo fell Luke became concerned she might fall if she was allowed to continue her training without her doing something stupidly heroic beforehand.
Also I wonder if Luke is gonna feel very "grey jedi" in episode 8, I'm sure after the disaster that was the first academy Luke is gonna feel responsible, and scared of training others and as we all know fear is the path to the dark side. So maybe he dabbled in it or something. Maybe Luke will give us an oh shit moment in the next movie where he unleashes some force lightning.
I was 9 when I saw TPM, and I loved it. It had a kid in the movie, I was a kid, the kid did cool things just like the grown ups did, there were lightsabers and pod racing. Jar Jar was basically the kid humor of the late 90s too so he didn't even feel that out of place considering how many cartoons I watched.
The movie was literally built for 9 year old kids who were too distracted by the fun stuff to see the plot being a disaster.

Does anyone have a gif of that laser bolt being held in place by Kylo near the beginning?
It seemed to be more than just a beam of light. Like some sort of electrical energy to it or something.
Edit: Or, there is something about armor in Star Wars that deflects lasers as a beam, but turns them into a physical force?
That could explain why sometimes they work like bullets and other times like rocks.

Trying to make sense of the vision again:
1- We see Luke with R2 in front of something burning, I think this could be some dead jedis bodies being cremated by Luke. Ben might have killed some, but not all, before leaving for the first Oder, if any at all...
2- Presumably the next scene is set after #1, we assume Kylo and his knights killed jedis here, but that's less than certain at this point, this is an assumption. What if those people were jedis who killed themselves? The last one remaining would have been young Rey and an adult (possibly her own father), and he tries to club her to death (Rey might even have resisted, killing her own mother first, who knows), but Kylo kills him before he can, saving Rey's life. This scene was really filmed like the guy was going to club Rey (vulnerable camera angle).

The fate of his mask was left vague but I sure hope it isn't lost. We assume it fell into the pit when the place started shaking but as Kylo's entire exit from the planet was left unseen, you can't say for certain. He could easily just show up with it on in the next movie.
I like the mask and I think its important to his look and character so I'd be pretty upset of they ditched it after one movie. I think it will be back, even if he has to make a replacement.

Yeah that was nuts, arguably the most iconic image from the trailers. Nowhere to be seen in the film.
Like seriously, that was the most hype scene in the trailer... and I was waiting for it to appear in the movie.
And got disappointed when I thought I missed it.
Like damn. If you're going to have hype trailers, why don't you make sure the scenes are representative of the final movie? (special effects changes acceptable... completely missing, not so cool!).

Same. I watched the movies a couple years ago and thought they were good but definitely wouldn't say I was a Star Wars fan. My friends were HUGE star wars fans but never was interested in it. I was quite surprised I bought Battlefront. I guess I was just bored of games like COD/Battlefield and wanted cool laser guns. In fact Battlefront was the first Star Wars product I ever bought. Second was my ticket to see TFA on friday there. Went to see it again yesterday.
I'm watching through all the movies again and have been playing Battlefront (still suck at it). I just want more and more Star Wars. Gonna look into any books/comics there might be. I really want a good RPG to play on PC. I tried The Old Republic but just can't do MMO's anymore. Might try out KOTR1 or 2.

We were shown two scenes that we know the lightsaber to have existed in. That lightsaber was there on Mustafar, and at Cloud City. Maybe it was there for whatever it was burning, and maybe even there later when Ren was dumped off.

The new Marvel Star Wars comics are all pretty good.
Carrie Fisher is charming and hilarious. I hope we get some of Carrie in the next movies. Leia is a lot like her, but she's been very toned down from Jedi to TFA.
She is always a hoot to listen to and follow on Twitter.
Her battle with mental illness and addiction is very inspiring. She knew that coming back to Leia was going to open her up to a lot of criticism over her looks, voice, etc, but she just takes it all in stride. She's a very compelling, charming woman.
I'm liking that this movie is still taking little bits and pieces of the EU as they overlap with their own plans. I honestly don't think they're going to completely discard it. Hell, Ben being Han and Leia's son who turns to the dark side is straight up EU. Even though he's not named Jacen (Luke named his son Ben in the EU). It would be great to have new canon versions of some of the cooler EU characters. But if they decide to completely ignore winks and nods for the hardcore fans, that's cool too. I'm just relieved that a new Star Wars is finally here, and it's good.

Had to have been part of the vision, since he shows up at end without his mask.
Since the vision consisted of fast edits, I can see why they cut it.
Maybe it will return in full form when we get the full story.
Maybe that's why Chewie's blast didn't knock him off his feet.

Gareth Edwards has said Rogue One's a more traditional war film with a focus on non force sensitive people. I still think Vader will appear though.

Kylo obviously knows who Rey is.. why is that? she had to have been hidden. Maybe she was more powerful then him in training and it always pissed him off.
