[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

One thing I'm hoping for is Luke adopting a more unconventional use of the Force, unless of course he was trained by the Force ghosts of Anakin, Obi-Wan and Yoda.

So hux, phasma, and kylo - we never see them escape but any word on dead vs alive? Of course kylo is but what about the other two?

Maz, Hux, Phasma, and Kylo, are all alive. That wasn't explained very well in this movie but don't worry.

Expect much more of Phasma in the sequel, she's pretty pissed.

I wonder how they made that. Just have Christopher Lee swinging at nothing, then animate Yoda to match his movements?

Actually it was a stunt double. And yea, it was a choreographed routine.

Anakin stands there for a solid 2 seconds to let Dooku take out his arm LOL.

You're not alone, friend

I can't imagine either Hux or Phasma died offscreen, they'll be back.

If we know garbage chutes/trash compactors, we know you can escape from them.

I think their goal was to try and re-create a boba fett situation with her where you dont see her often but everything is implied. They really screwed it up though cause both times you see her, she just ends up looking ineffective. Shame. So bad ass in the trailers.

Will go see it again though.

You know after writing that post I remembered that I didn't just pull that reasoning out if nowhere. It was the legit official explanation for a while. Not sure if the different lightsaber forms survived the EU nuking but most PT Jedi did train in a more blaster defensive form. While someone like Dooku actually focused on a more saber to saber combat oriented style. I can't remember what all the 7(?) forms specialized in anymore.
I'm definitely not saying that there aren't also different styles of lightsabre fighting, that's a given, and something I generally enjoy about Star Wars films.

Will need to watch the EP7 fights again, but wouldn't it have made more sense if Finn had fought in the style of that Stormtrooper with his riot baton? That's how he'd have been trained for close-combat but I don't remember it matching up, and I thought that would have been the entire point of that silly interlude.

Maybe there was too much seperation in the scenes and I didn't notice the connection.

All alive.

We actually do get word on Hux in the movie though. That lesser New Order officer bursts into the Snoke holochamber because one of the staff tells him that Hux has already fled the planet. Dude saw which way the wind was blowing.

Hux was still on planet as he had to retrieve Ren.

Ugh, I still think Yoda should be above using a lightsaber (as should Palpatine)
I rewatched the OT last week and the disdain that the Emperor says "Jedi weapon" made it seem that lightsabers were something only Jedi used while those in tune with the Dark Side had other abilities (ie force lightning). And Vader only had a lightsaber due to his Jedi history and training, but it wasn't the norm

Well, just got of my second showing. Put me in the group that loves it even more the second time. And now seeing it a second time, the overall feel of the movie is so much different than A New Hope. I think in time people will see it's much less similar than originally thought to be.

Also, instantly I could hear people say "She is definitely Luke's daughter". I just can't help but think they're wrong. That would be way to obvious of a choice. She's gonna be of Sith blood I just know it. I didn't notice during my first viewing just how much she fights like Palpatine. So much.

Prequels couldn't even do this.

This one looks like it hurt. This one looks like they're trying to kill each other. There's actually a meaningful sense of danger here.

The actual reason why R2 booting up was explained by JJ and its not great. BB8 apparently walked up and decided to Ask R2 if he had any maps and surprise in the death star all those years ago he downloaded the map that he needed.

time to boot up.

not joking

Oh wow, that is super idiotic. If R2 downloaded the map to the Jedi temples while on the Death Star 38 years ago, then why was the piece of map that BB-8 had missing from R2's map? Really dumb, and makes no sense. Would have been a much better explanation if Luke had put the map into R2.

I have no idea why people like the choreography in the Old Republic cinematic. Fucking bouncing lightsabers like it's nothing, it looks ridiculous.

That was talking to Snoke at the end? I'm pretty sure he was.

Nah, man. Some other New Order officer. The guy immediately before he runs into Snoke's holochamber is asking for a damage report and one of his men says everything is falling apart and that Hux has already fled the planet. At that point, he goes into the chamber and begs pardon of Snoke, asking him what to do and he says to go get Kylo Ren and get out of there.

The guy was just some guy.

This will probably be the third movie that I'll see in the theater more than once, the other two being the matrix and avatar, and I'm super excited. I feel like some of the best parts were early on and I was still trying to acclimate. At first I was thrown off by Ren's voice just because it wasn't Vader, but by the time I warmed up to it and started really liking it he had put his helmet aside. Also, the moment that he froze the blaster bolt was perfect. The sound and camera shake made it feel very real for a cg moment.

Quick Question that I was wondering on the re-watch of ROTJ.

The moment where Luke breaks and decides to kill Palpatine Vader stops him. Now Palpatine obviously expected it thinking Vader did it out of a sense of loyalty to him but...

If killing Palpatine in a rage would have started Luke on a path down the darkside then Vader was likely saving him even then right?

Luke should still use a lightsaber. I don't think he would be on Yoda or Palpatines level.

I keep seeing people say that Yoda and Palpatine should never have used lightsabers, as if there's something more dignified about literally wrecking everything around them and/or consistently achieving stalemates via the alternative.

Okay, so we must assume that the Republic doesn't have the means to build their own army (yet)? Or the Resistance is probably like an armed NGO.

I couldn't tell for sure, but my impression was that the Republic has its own fleet, but is secretly supporting the Resistance, possibly to avoid feeding anti-Republic sentiment. I think the opening crawl said something like this, but I might be misremembering.

How are the odds that Rey is Ren's twin sister? Would be a nod to the old EU too.

I think if this is the case, they should have established it in this movie instead of letting the future movies ride on more "I am X member of your family" twists.

1) The Republic is the current legitimate government in the galaxy, and they're funding the Resistance against the First Order, which seems to be a legacy militia helmed by leftovers from the Empire with a massive grudge against the Republic which they see as an illegitimate splinter group.

2) They destroyed the "Hosnian system," which was the current seat of the Republic as well as (apparently) the place where their main fleet was based. According to new EU content, the capitol moves as new leaders are elected.

The Resistance is a militia group created by Leia and friends to thwart the upstart First Order. The planet destroyed was Hosnian Prime (New Republic capital, analogous to Coruscant)

This is the same as the prequels (although better), just make it look cool and flashy. I hate this choreography in Star Wars. If it was in the Original Trilogy as well then I wouldn't mind it but this just looks so out of place.

Would people be pissed if Rey was moving and fighting like this by IX?

I would.

It's a different take on it, sure. But again, the way the fights are composed and shot have energy to them. It's kinetic. Because it's CG, they can go full comic book, and they did.

I thought the command room and the throne reception room were in different areas and that Hux had gone to ask Snoke what to do, with Snoke telling him to get Ren and get out. I guess because it was a long shot, I mistook Hux for that other commander. That is hilarious if Hux just up and noped it right out of there.

I've actually thought about it this way during a lot of re-watches
