[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

So since that was Anakin's/Luke's old Light Saber.

Did anyone notice that in the previews when Finn was holding it? Or were all the trailers shot in a way that you couldn't see the hilt each time?

I ask because I know the shape of the hilts are very specific/iconic to the die hards. I have a cousin that has a few hilts mounted on his wall.

Yeah we've known since the first trailer where it was shown, I made a post about it on the trailer thread.

Best of both worlds Dual-wielding lightsabers that combine into a dual blade

Didn't Darth Maul's double bladed sabre do that? Or am I misremembering? I haven't seen Ep1 since it came out.

I can't decide if I want Rey to have a saber staff or not.

It would make total sense, but it just feels so... prequels.

If they can make it work with the intense saber fights like this one had, I'm all for it. But I don't want her to devolve into flashy dance-fighting like the prequels.

My thoughts as well. If we didn't have Maul's staff already then I'd be down for it, but for some reason her fighting style with a Light staff vs. a real staff feels weird in my head. A staff just isn't for cutting like a sword/sabre.

The best part of that scene was Luke taking off his hood all fabulous-like. Like he was in an herbal essences commercial

Yeah Luke was styling hard in that shot. I love that they held the shot, they didn't shy away from it. Just, look at him. Look at him.

The problem with plot holes in Star Wars is its easy to just say.

the will of force dictated this meeting. etc..

like we are supposed to believe that BB8 found Rey on accident, and she accidentally runs into the MF and they get caught by Han Solo who take them accidentally to Maz who happens to have a light saber that is calling to her.

come on its all will of force.

waves hand.

Because every detail not being explicitly explained to you in a movie is not necessarily a plot hole.

Again, fair enough. Plot contrivance then, of which there are many.

Enjoyed the movie, but I wish it was more confident in itself. It was strong enough with the new actors that it didn't need to use so much of the previous films as a crutch.

Yeah dumb decision on the First Order's part.

In the Star Wars universe you have to clear a planet's gravity before jumping to hyperspace which is faster than light speed. The gravity prevents the hyper drive from creating hyperspace. A star would have significantly higher gravity than a planet and they looked to be pretty close still.
In the OT they never had troopers equipped to fight anyone with a lightsaber. I actually don't remember the PT well enough to care if something like that existed prior to the OT.

In TFA we see an entire planet turned into a killing machine that eats stars.

I'll chalk hyperspacing away from strong gravitational pull up to technological advancement in hyperdrive systems in a fantasy movie. I mean, we have beams of solid light that stop at a meter in length. This isn't exactly grounded in any sort of reality. Three decades of advancement in fantasy technology.

R2 went from rendering an interlaced, barely readable image of a princess to a complicated map detailed with Star systems. Nobody bats an eye.

Kind of. Lazy writing just to establish a 'legacy' connection if there isn't a good reason that makes sense for the saber to be recovered.

I don't get why plot holes are dismissed as "not a big deal". It was a really good movie, but it had quite a few plot contrivances that are worthy of pointing out.

Because the movie doesn't rely on it. She didn't need to find Luke's saber to find him ; they were already looking for him.

It serves as a connection to the OT, and a good one at that, while not answering all the questions that you might have about it. It's fine. It's magical.

Fun movie!

I was really afraid that Kylo would just be a Darth knockoff, which he ended up being, but way they executed it worked out great. The saber battles were also much better than the flippy ninja shit in the prequels.

My only real disappointments were the death star retread and the fact they got The Raid crew in just so they could be eaten by space monsters.

It's true. All of it. This is why I don't complain about coincidence, parallels, chance meetings, history repeating itself, so on. It's the nature of the series, it's like poetry.

That's fine, i see what you are saying but personally I disagree. Again I thought the film was strong enough that it didn't need to connect itself to the old films so heavily in so many ways. Especially ones that were unnecessary like that.

The Jedi clothing is just another PT error, stemming from Obi Wan's robe in Star Wars ("Episode IV"). Obi Wan was in hiding on Tatooine. He certainly wouldn't have worn any sort of conspicuous Jedi clothing identifying him as one.

Just another reason why the PT is shite.

If Hamill has some action sequences in the next movie he should definitely return back to his Return of the Jedi garb, especially now that he's in good shape.

Best Luke

Agreed.

This is what I posted on my immediate reaction back on Thursday:

Just got back from IMAX.

I loved it. Unfortunately, I was spoiled that Han Solo died (my own fault for browsing 4chan) so that scene lost all tension for me which kinda sucks but even if I wasn't spoiled it had this very ominous feel to it and you kinda saw he was going to die. I still can't believe they actually killed him off, and in a way where Leia couldn't even give him a proper burial. They way he lovingly touched his son's face as if to say he still loved him. Brutal stuff.

I loved everything about it, though. It looked great, it sounded great, it was funny, it had great action scenes, a perfect mix of classic nostalgia and new school. It's obviously not perfect, and I felt the story played it a bit too safe (you would think after the rebels destroyed two Death Star's that the third Death Star wouldn't have the same exact weakness) but everything that was there was crafted with such great detail and respect JJ had for the Star Wars lore.

And the saber duels. Awesome. Yeah, it's kinda silly that Finn was able to last that long against Ren but when Rey used the Force to beat Ren and get Luke's lightsaber and flung it past Ren I was like fuckkkkkk. The thing I loved about the duels were they actually looked like sword fights and had a lot of weight behind them, instead of a choreographed set piece of twirling and back flips.

Disappointed Luke was only there for the last 15 seconds but we will obviously see him way more in VIII and IX. Going to see this again on Sunday.

After seeing it again last night, I still agree with my initial impressions. I do have to say though, it definitely feels more like a re-imagining of A New Hope rather than a proper sequel to Return of the Jedi. It makes sense, though. The movie without question pleases old school fans with nostalgia, the OT cast, and amazing actions sequences and even though it treads on ANH a bit too much it's still a Star Wars film that fans have been waiting for decades. It's also clear JJ and Disney wanted to play it safe to attract the new generation of Star Wars fans who didn't grow up with the OT or perhaps even the prequels.

Regardless, now that the foundation of the new trilogy is set, I hope we see VIII and IX take on its own identity. I am sure they will.

You mean wookies?

didn't the ewoks start moving the AT-ST while chewie was still standing on the roof? I figured chewie just took over the "gunner seat"

It's funny how she's fascinated by starships and knew about Han Solo yet didn't know what the Falcon looked like.

I loved that scene. She looked totally adorbs.

for all she knew it could have been a regular ass YT-1300 freighter.

But RoTJ has all three force ghosts in their robes. Even the unaltered OG run pre-Hayden. ROTJ was still before PT.

Purple plz

Or green. Green's always nice.

Why can't we have orange yellow or pink light sabers?
I know Plo Koon had an orange one but offhand that's really it for those colors eh? Shame, I'm all for rainbow diversity. Id rock a pink light saber.

Edit: damn I was wong Plo Koon is blue. I thought someone had an orange one tho?

What about a totally white light saber? You know, to emphasize that she's with the light side, the good guys?

People would riot if she had a pink light saber
