[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

Hardly forgettable. Reys theme, Resistance theme, Kylo theme were great.

Coming out of the theater, I also thought that the music was rather forgettable. However, I do feel that, that's mostly because I'm so used to the themes from the older films, so those stood out to me more than anything else. If I'm being honest, I didn't really appreciate the score until I heard it on its own. It's really good.

I know that when I see it again, the new musical themes will stand out a lot more.

False, we have an entire "Story Group" making sure any new material does not contradict the established canon.

I'm only a few chapters into the novelization of the film and it already contradicts stuff from the film. I really doubt the story group has much sway on the set of a film.

I'm sure this was already brought up,but does anyone else think Leia might already know who Rey is? When they first met after Starkiller Base was destroyed, Leia wasn't even mourning Hans' death. She immediately went straight to Rey and hugged her with a smile.

Another reason why I think the Solos might know is because there was a scene where Maz Kanata asked Han who she was and was immediately cut short. Part of me is still clinging on that she might be a Solo, but that's just me just looking back into that now famous first table read photo where she was sitting (it's probably just coincidental now).

But I think I'm heavily favoring that she's Luke's kid with I don't know.

She is Tarkin's granddaughter :o

I disagree. Torn Apart, Jedi Steps, March of the Resistance, Rey's Theme, The Scavenger...I've found them to be very memorable.

If I'd only judged it on what I'd heard in the film I'd probably agree with you apart from a few tracks. But listening to it several times, there's a lot to enjoy. It's a slow burner. I'm glad John was able to do it,
Scherzo for X-Wings, Scavenger, Attack on Jakku Village, Snoke... This is a solid score. Still the best film soundtrack I've heard all year, and I might even rate it higher than Attack of the Clones. It's certainly different.

^ if you hold every film score to the standard of DOTF, then every soundtrack is a disappointment. No other movie has that high a standard attached to it. And like others have said, while it's not as marketable or as epic as DOTF, Rey's theme is right up there with the great character themes of this saga.

I think they're the definition of forgettable since I don't remember even a five second snippet of them. Pretty unusual for me to walk out of a movie without noticing much about the score.

I'm going to go see if I can listen to it now, but at this moment I don't even know what Rey's theme is.

Okay. But clearly others aren't having trouble with those themes. Rey's theme is really growing on people. Like I said, exposure. Listen to those tracks on YouTube or something.

Yea if you listen to anything a hundred times it'll stick in your head. But the film score is different than the soundtrack. There is a reason a favorite special feature on DVD was the isolated score. It's a different beast.

Why not? It'd be a cool nod for the fans and they can explain it (through what Luke has found) in such a way that all of the audience can easily understand it. The fall of Revan and Malik is a pretty cool storyline to canonize

For how many fans? It's a global entity for all audiences. How is some girl from China supposed to relate to a Bioware RPG that she's never heard about.

I think Rian Johnson has his script and is working on the making the details work instead of nodding a video game.

Saw it again today with my sons. Loved it even more.

Some things I noticed:

Rey specifically says she has flown ships before, just not as far as out to space (for those thinking she has zero experience before the Falcon).

Rey's light sabre style is VERY close to OT Luke's style with long sweeping strokes. Very cool.

Maz is well over a thousand years old, so she has definitely seen some shit and has insight about the Force.

The faces some of the characters make around Rey...Han definitely knows some shit about her, so does Leia. Maybe even Kylo. As Boyega leaves Maz's bar, Maz last line to Han is "So, Who's the girl?". Han probably spills it to her then, but we don't get to hear the conversation. Then Rey finds the sabre. The look of guilt on Han's face when Rey drops the green line. Fabulous.

Still not convinced she is a Skywalker of Luke. Could she be a Solo? Rey and Kylo twins? It rhymes and twins are genetic (though usually skip generations). That would make her a Skywalker on leias side still.

Novelizations usually change or add stuff, but what you see on screen is the canon version of the movie

The story group only makes sure it doesn't contradict previous or upcoming works in the canon.

Nothing in that novel will contradict the prequels, the OT, another canon book, or the cartoons.

I get that but it just came out and has its own themes. With that exposure it can grow on you. I don't believe in writing something off as forgettable right off the bat.

I'm going to go see if I can listen to it now, but at this moment I don't even know what Rey's theme is.
Haha, I'm doing the same. I found it on YouTube and I actually don't remember this song playing.

It's actually pretty solid. Weird that it was so unremarkable within the film though.

Yes, Leia absolutely knows who Rey is. The look and prolonged hug gave that away.

Is likely a Skywalker descendent whether from Luke or Leia is going to be the big question. I'm guessing Luke as I can't believe after all the pain Han/Leia went through with Kylo/Ben that then just ditched her on a desert planet. Also the connection with Luke's lightsaber, having Force dreams of the island/planet Luke was on, etc.

A friend of mine brought up good points though as to why she is Han/Leia's kid. She shows a lot of similarities to Han; Han and Chewie took to her right away and Han offered her a 'job'; and of course the look/hug; The fact that the MF wound up on the same planet as her.

I suck at predictions so she is probably not a Skywalker

Just saw it today and I loved it!

So, from what I understood, Kylo Ren wasn't the only one trained by Luke at that time, am I wrong? So couldn't Rey be one of those apprentices? That would explain why she could use the force so well and handle the lightsaber when Luke could not in the OT (yes, that's really bugging me).

Listen to Rey's theme on youtube. Its legitimately great imo.

Just listened to it. I do recall the opening melody used a few times, such as when Rey is leaving the star destroyer she's scavenging at the beginning, and it's good. And there's another bit at the 1:00 mark that was used a few times. All the rest just wanders around too much - was any of it in the film?

that may be part of it, but you can't tell me this film had anything as memorable as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzVBqBosf5w.
I'm not going to argue that this score has anything as bombastic, but as for why this score feels unmemorable, I think the mix plays a part in that. It's hard to develop those emotional connections between what's on the screen and what's playing if you can barely hear the music.

I was actually really disappointed that during the Starkiller bombing run you could barely hear much of Scherzo for X-Wings, because it's one of those pieces that actually has a lot of energy in it.

With Leia
That's some Game of Thrones stuff. Lol

Rey was the jedi that was promised. She is Azor Ahai (or the Chosen One in this matter).

Well, I have thought of the possibility. Rey's powers was more potent then Kylo. Kylo is a half Jedi too. Lol

(Which makes no sense because Padme didn't have the force).

It's not the best PST I've heard, but I think the music is great. I love a few pieces and it all really adds to the emotion, energy, and overall atmosphere of the movie.

Variations and a tinsy bit sequences of it were. It's kinda like how Anakin's theme worked in TPM, only more downplayed. In both occasions, you only ever solidly hear them in the credits.

How though? She was like 5 when she was abandoned on Jaku. Did a 5 year old Kylo muder everyone?

She's got super force levels in her and luke and leia were so ashamed of their mistake they dumped her in a desert to hide their horrid shame.

Driver is like 10 years older than her. I mean I guess hollywood makeup is pretty amazing, but by the time episode IX comes out the twins thing is gonna look pretty unrealistic visually. Unless Kylo decides to always keep the mask on from here on out or something.

Were there any unlikeable characters in this movie at all? Where it felt the prequels were sometimes more toy sale drivers than the OT had been, aliens got very little screen time here and all the tech once again looked lived in and dirty. Definitely a more human film and a greater emphasis on good pacing.

Han dying instead of Luke either dying or bei the big bad was really well done.

Didn't he get his face all cut up at the end? That would be great excuse to use prosthetics to hide age differences.

Also, the whole twins thing is an even worse retread because it is an incredibly specific one.

I realllllly don't want Rey to be a solo, and I would prefer it if she wasnt a skywalker, because then we don't have to have that scene where Luke says "I am your father".

Put me on TeamNotSoloWalker as well

It's gonna feel like the only person that matters in the entire universe should have Skywalker lineage.

Yeah. That's too similar. I love the idea she might be a Kenobi. Otherwise I want her to be her own lineage. Just like Finn and Poe would be.

Kylo and Rey aren't the same age. She's like 20 and he is around 30. Han's reaction to her is, at best, one of thinking he might know who she is, but maybe not. Its not one of parent seeing the child they abandoned when she was six.

My breakdown:

60% - She's Luke's daughter
30% - She has no blood relation and was adopted by Skywalker.
5% - She's a Kenobi
5% - Twist that I can't think of
0% - She's a Solo
0% - SpaceJesus 2.0

EDIT: That's just what I think "will" happen, not what I "want" to happen. Not sure what I want to happen.
