[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

Since Rey is likely a Skywalker and training with dad, It would be cool if Finn trained with Maz and turned out more like Kyle Katran.

That would be awesome. I actually really resent the lack of Kyle Katarn in all the movies.

Are you saying R2D2 is force sensitive?

Somebody earlier ITT suggested it and it seemed as likely as any other explanation – until this guy said:

The actual reason why R2 booting up was explained by JJ and its not great. BB8 apparently walked up and decided to Ask R2 if he had any maps and surprise in the death star all those years ago he downloaded the map that he needed.

time to boot up.

not joking

Well. That sucks. One of the few times more subtitles would have helped.

Chewie is with Rey
Finn isn't a pilot

I don't think so personally. Rey climbed the steps on the island on her own. Chewie stayed with the Falcon with R2. I think it's obvious that they're going with an isolated Master and Apprentice setup very similar to Luke and Yoda in Empire. Chewie is going back to the Resistance and will probably be apart of Finn's arc.

Rey as pilot of the Falcon is probably the closest we're going to getting Kyle Katarn and the Moldy Crow in this continuity.

Saw it again for a second time and damn it was better then the first time I saw it.

I know there are little things about the movie that people may not like but overall it's such a great ride from beginning to the end. Abrams has set up this new trilogy perfectly for Johnson and Trevarrow. Episode 8 is going to be epic.

A question, the Starkiller base - does it move from star to star using them each for one shot, or is it that it uses it, then Sun reignites and repeat ? In that case I assume its range is limited on the time of year ??

Am I the only one not happy with the movie :( I so wanted to like it :(

It moves. The stars it uses to charge get sucked dry.

"The death of a Star"

Get it?

Quick, post the best new random creature/alien design.

Luggabeast mos def.

Of course you aren't. And there are plenty of fans that only like it and don't love it. A lot of people have seen Star Wars, not everyone is going to agree on everything. And that's a good thing.

I really liked it, but it is in no way better than any of the OT. It's better than the PT, but I also really like the PT. So I'm a very happy Star Wars fans.

Someone mentioned earlier they can only do limited filming on the island. They are probably leaving together.

If a dying Han Solo touching Kylo's face in a forgiveness/love gesture doesn't hold any emotional weight, I don't know what does.
That is when I lost it, tried to hide the tears from my friends. Everyone of my mates acknowledged how powerful that moment is, as Han passed, he didn't blame his son :( I'm about to lose it again.

I thought it was the 2nd best SW movie, after ESB.

How great Mark Hamill now looks and how much I'm looking forward to seeing Luke Skywalker again makes re-starting the entire franchise worth it alone. Then throw in the fact that the new characters are great to boot.... whatatimetobealive.jpg

Indeed, I thought the plot focussing on legendary Luke Skywalker was perfect, sets up Rian Johnson wonderfully for a character driven masterpiece for Ep8.

Same here, although I think A New Hope might still have a slight edge on The Force Awakens.

What didn't you like about it? Sad to hear!

So why do you guys think Rey was abandoned on Jakku?

If her father is indeed Luke, perhaps he did it before he exiled himself to protect her from Snoke and the resurgence of the dark side following his "failure", similarly to how Luke and Leia were hidden away?

I wish this was out on blu ray or dvd :( or better digital

I've seen that sentiment a lot. But ANH is my favorite, followed by ESB, then RotJ,TFA, RotS, AotC, TPM.

But really the rankings are fairly meaningless. I'm a fan of the whole Saga. What I like about the original 6 is George Lucas' vision. As I get older I'm very interested in the artist so I want to see what they have to present whether I like it or not. Yea the PT is a mess, but it's a mess only a genius can make and there is a hell of a lot I like about those films. They just have some real lows in them.

That would be understandable, but if it's the case I expect a lot of friction between them. She's young and waited for her parents for so long, she shouldn't let it slide so easily or be immediately understanding

Hopefully Rian Johnson lets the characters kick back and get some breathing room

I was ecstatic with parts of this film but I was also pretty disappointed how rushed it all felt, didn't get a good feel for any of the new guys. Closest was Finn but that's about it. It was just on to the next action sequence back to back

I'm excited to know more about these guys so hopefully we get some hang out scenes in the falcon and also between ren and snoke and whomever

Edit: where this luke theory falls apart though is why drop her off at a freaking dump? Leia got a palace and luke was dropped off with family.

Because Rogue One is set before A New Hope, making Felicity Jones' character much older than Luke.

It takes place like a year before ANH iirc and Felicity Jones could easily be in her early 20s in the film, compared to Luke being like 17 at the time. There's an age difference but it's not terribly significant.

People saying they miss Kyle Katarn do not realize Finn is Kyle. Stormtrooper turned good who will later find out he is force sensitive.

I loved the Force Awakens, but things like this feel confusing just for the sake of being confusing. Jakku... like Tatooine... but it's Jakku. Hosnian Prime... like Coruscant... but it's Hosnian Prime.

TFA is a fun movie, but it is doing a really bad job creating a feeling for the universe those movies are part of. You can say about the prequels what you want, but those gave us so much lore and a great feeling how big and complex the universe is.

I have a crazy theory about the direction Rey will go as a Jedi, and the key is her staff. I think she's gonna be a dual bladed lightsaber wielder like Darth Maul, except for the light side.

Absolutely. I'll say this is certainly a better movie than any of the prequels but it didn't do a good job at world building tbh

Phantom Menace had a very defined structure to everything. This was tattooine, that was naboo, here was the senate's role etc

Here Im kind of left confused as to what the hell happened post return of the jedi. And especially about those planets that exploded. So is the republic exterminated entirely?

I've seen the dual-blade staff lightsaber a couple of times in this thread.

If she is in her early 20s, the movie makes little to no sense, considering she's part of an elite squad that is sent to capture the plans of the Death Star. She's have to have amazing natural combat skills to proceed this far in the ranks at that early age.

One might even say... guided by an unseen Force...

The fact that the New Republic is destroyed as well as a 3rd vastly superior Death Star,
has really lowered my hype for Rogue One.

Unless the movie is amazing it just seems so insignificant now compared to other potential movies.

None of that has anything to do with rogue one though. In fact I think that has a chance to be better because it will already have a well established background that we're all aware of and its simpler plot will hopefully give a lot of room for that motley crew of characters to stretch

Plus it helps that the cast rocks too

I can't see how events in Episode 7 have killed your hype for Rogue One.
They don't effect any events in Rogue One right? Or am I misunderstanding you.

I don't think the New Republic is destroyed. Just planets within the New Republic.

Also to anyone inclined Rebel force radio did episode 1 of their review (they will be reviewing it with different cast members of the SW family from Rebels/Clone/Games/TFA) and its great, they had people who did the ADR for alot of background characters.

Its a really good listen, lots of new info you might now know and behind the scenes stuff.

Was there any official word about Rey having Plaguis' light-staff?

rT2QDhb.jpg

They look fairly similar, but I'm not 100% sure if it's the same thing. Then again, Plaguis weapon here is from a toy, so it's bound to be different from the 'canon' staff. I was thinking that the staff itself could be made of the same "vibro-steel" or whatever the swords from kotor were made of (is that still canon?), making it an actually good weapon to use against other Force users.

But rogue one is 35-40 years before TFA

Not canon

After the Emperor was killed, the Empire fractured into various splinter groups with high ranking generals vying for control. Eventually the Rebel Alliance overcame most of them, established a New Republic, and forced the remnants of the Empire to disarm and agree a peace treaty. The Alliance disbanded, and the New Republic established a new capital on Hosnian Prime, away from Corsucant. The senate building was on that planet.

In the outer reaches of the galaxy, Snoke established and took command of the First Order, a small group of Imperial remnants who were in possession of the last remaining Super Star Destroyer (which they were supposed to turn over to the Republic). The Republic does not view them as a credible threat, and mostly ignores them although they allow Leia to lead a Resistance against them in the more obscure parts of the galaxy. In secret the First Order has been building Starkiller Base and Snoke has turned Leia's son to the dark side, and ordered him to find Luke Skywalker (and presumably other powerful Force users).

It's not clear how much of the Republic's infrastructure was destroyed along with the Hosnian system, we only know it was the capital system where the senate had relocated.

Its why I think Felicity Jones is really the entire purpose for why this is their first choice for a stand alone film. If she has no connection to Rey or Luke and this really is just a film for its own sake, then I have to question the judgement of Disney, because we couldn't be more sick about ANYTHING involving Death Stars at this point.
