[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

Finn is kinda shit at weapons in ships at first, specially at the falcon, and that's fun, and fine, and even then he's had stormtrooper training since childhood. He goes "DID YOU SEE THAT SHIT" when he managed to pull something off on the Tie fighter.

Poe is the best fucking pilot there is and that works cause he's shit at other stuff and fails at shooting Kylo with a blaster like a dumbass.

these are justified, and regardless of the explanations it makes for more fun and interesting moments

Rey just shrugs what she does off.

I don't know, doesn't that just make that guy an asshole scrapyard owner? Seemed like she was free to do whatever she wanted, she just had a shitty job with a shitty boss.

so if someone is selling something and they decide they want to set the price, i'm their slave?

That doesn't mean she's a slave though. It means he ruins a really shady monopoly.

If you lived in an isolated desert at the whim of an individual who controlled all food, water, fuel, transportation, etc. Yes, you would be his slaves by default. If they don't do what he tells them, they get punished with starvation, thirst, beatings, or death.

If she was a slave, then why would he offer he extra food rations? If she belongs to him, he would just own everything she does by default.

She's a scavenger, not a slave. She just happens to be in a shitty location with extra shitty supply and demand scenarios.

His actions after she declined to "sell" B-88 just shows that the entire bartering system is for show, ei, a way to maintain control by creating the façade of freedom.

Luke shoots a bunch of storm troopers in the Death Star even though he never shot people before. Can you say forced greatness?

Luke is so awesome that he doesn't shy away from using ranged weapons on the battlefield.

unlike stupid prequel jedi who had koodies from touching blasters, Luke goes "out of range? okay I will use my gun then""

Because the setup is identical between the two? One throwaway line of dialog to justify their flying experience? Whatever, I'm done with this argument. I didn't realize it was already 4pm and time for the thread to circle back around to the Rey/pilot thing.

why does it bother you. it's a legitimate discussion and im not trolling on Rey

the setup is not identical, at all. One is the final character moment and the other is the first. I don't get what you mean. It doesnt matter that Luke's line justifies the flying cause it's the final moment. It's a film and it doesnt have the same impact in its run time or at that pace.

sorry if it's already been discussed but ultimately we're discussing opinions so of course its gonna cycle back. I couldnt talk about the film before cause I was banned.

So is defeating two TIE Fighters equivalent to destroying the Death Star now?

It dont matter what he or she does. What matters is how's presented. Ultimately they both survive and overcome what they set out to do. Thing is luke kinda sucks at first and to me that's more fullfiling and fun. I felt the stakes for other characters in this but never for Rey, it bummed me out a bit.

im far from hating her character

I dont understand the pilot thing--I understand getting mad at Reys quick grasp of advanced force technique...but piloting? she loves flying and mechanical shit and has the force.

Even Obi-Wan who hates flying was an expert pilot because the force makes it very easy to fly.

And she didnt just shrug her flying off--her and Finn had an orgasm after that over it

They have books, comics, and games for these things. People are going to have to accept a lot of the explanations they feel they need are going to be put into those more often than not and that anything committed to film will be abridged. These are going to be forward-moving films, I think. TFA makes that clear.

the main episodes are forward-moving, but the off-year spin-offs are supposedly during any part of history isn't it?

I think Mad von Sydow explicitly says there can't be balance of the Force without the Jedi.

Right, i'm talking specifically about the non jedi part of the equation :P

Jedi don't use the force for greed or anger they just exist with the force. Sith/Dark side peeps pervert the natural state of the force and use it for power/personal gains.

Thats why the dark side is a corruption that needs to be removed to restore the balance.

Vader killing the emperor and returning to the light didn't throw the balance back in favor of the light side, it restored the balance

It seems like you forgot that she almost destroyed several buildings on Jakku while trying to get the Falcon to simply fly away.

It's still not slavery. Just because he denies her goods doesn't mean she can't get them somewhere else.

She has the option to trade goods/services to other people in the town for food/resources as well.

Luke and Rey comparisons are silly. Luke does exceptional shit as part of his monomyth. Maybe he doesn't diagetically-plausibly earn it but he dramatically-plausibly earns it.

It's still not slavery. Just because he denies her goods doesn't mean she can't get them somewhere else.

She has the option to trade goods/services to other people in the town for food/resources as well.

Maybe legally, but not practically. If she could find a better deal, why doesn't she? Anyway, this doesn't matter.

Except she doesn't?

She gets super excited when Han offers her a job. Telling her she must actually know her shit.

She screws up the fuses in the tunnel.

I'm sure there are others that I'm not thinking of. I need to go see it again already.

Well, there's a part where she tries to shoot a stormtrooper but forgets to turn off the safety on the blaster. That's a cute moment.

Rey just shrugs what she does off.

We'd have to spend an extra day with her on planet to explain how she knows how to fly things:

With the ball of the story already rolling, better that that info gets put out in a supplemental book. Economical story-telling again.

I mean, if you want to super nit-pick, how come Star Destroyers can lock down controls on ships that come in range but they can't turn off a damn Tie Fighter trying to leave unscheduled? And what happened to hangar bay force fields?

Well to me it's just lazy character writing

Did he own her speeder?

The tie fighter blew up the command center and I'd imagine it would be pretty hard to do anything without that.

The first order felt too much like the empire instead of a rebel faction. The republic should have far too many worlds and ships right now to be threatened by this.

guys screwing up fuses and forgetting to turn safety's off is a weird comparison to accurately flying a huge ship through a star destroyer, using a jedi mind trick succesfully in minutes, and besting a trained sith fanboy on a lightsaber duel

you're forgetting the biggest thing against my argument which is she actually does get force-freezed like once, and that was a cool moment

it's an opinion thing, ultimately, so there's no point, but the "she actually kinda struggled with it for a second before getting the hang of it and flying it better than Han Solo ever did!" isnt enough to what I would have prefered, personally

It DID, ultimately, made the movie a bit less for me how I didnt quite feel the stakes for her as I would have liked, and I hope it's something they can fix, tho I find it hard considering it has to move forward from what was already shown

it's a thing I had with the film, is all.

My roommate just watched the ot for the first time.

He hated it. He doesn't like "old movies" though frankly I think they hold up pretty well. He saya they are boring.

Heart is broken

Saw this film in 4DX. The experience was worth it. While there were times that I got annoyed by it and simply wanted to watch the movie, other times my jaw hit the floor with how much it added to the experience. I would recommend watching the film with 4DX is available.

Anyway my thoughts on the film:
  • The film was good. Not great, but good. It was a satisfying film which is more than I can say with anything from the prequel trilogy. However, I still continue to insist that the Star Wars franchise is over-rated. This film does not deserve to be the highest grossing film ever.
  • The leads, Rey and Fin, are really good. They standout and are far more memorable characters than Luke and Han or Anakin and Padme
  • I loved how the film had the balls to kill Han. However, I wonder if this was less of an artistic choice or more of a choice of the studio being nervous that Ford wouldn't sign up for the next two films
  • Han's son being the main villian was good and his actual character was interesting. However, the character design is very generic and nowhere near as iconic as Darth Vader or Darth Maul
  • How the hell does the First Order have the funds to construct a ship ten times bigger than the Death Star?
  • Is the First Order suppose to be significantly stronger than the Empire or weaker? I assumed the latter but still am not sure
  • Am I suppose to believe that Rei, with no training, can defeat Han's son, who had tons of training, in a lightsaber fight because of "the Force"?

It took a long time before he did that. They actually told the soldiers to "stop it" rather than just push a button to override its controls.

New Order probably skimped on those "non-essential options". Supreme Leader Snoke isn't made of money, ya know!

Just curious what film you think "deserves" to be the highest grossing ever?

Again in regards to the last bullet point, I think you missed some if think Kylo had tons of training, was 100%, or that Rey was necessarily untrained.

potential episode 8 rumours already out there, god help me i saw one :3

Those people can't be helped.

Build your ship's guts into a planet.

Weaker.

UNKAR PLUTT
A hulking Crolute, Unkar Plutt is the junkboss of Jakku, doling survival rations out to scavengers in return for salvage from the Graveyard of Ships. The ruthless Unkar uses hired muscle to enforce his stranglehold on barter, sending his thugs to punish any scavenger who dares dabble in unauthorized trades or negotiates too aggressively. The Blobfish – as scavengers call him behind his broad back -- has collected all matter of weapons, gears and ships over the years, including a battered Corellian freighter he keeps under a tarp on the outskirts of Niima Outpost.

i dont think you understand what a slave is, but ok
I don't think you understand that there's more than one way to be a slave, but OK.
She's a slave in the same way modern day human trafficking uses slaves in sweatshops.

Didn't Leia say Luke trained her son until he turned to the Dark Side? I might have heard it wrong but they definitely said he trained a son until he went dark and I assumed it was Han and Leia's son. And Rey certainly shows she has competent with a baton, but not a lightsaber.

Nobody knows shit yet, don't worry about it.

Really? Im quite glad if this is so, I know a bunch of shit is going to get leaked in the next few months, gonna try and stay away from it.

This thread is episode 8 spoiler free I assume

imma continue my picking cause the discussion is fun

disappointment other:

tentacle monster scene was eh, probably what i'd miss the less from the movie if it was something else

I like the idea of Han having his lil monster smuggling ring and double crossing the people that hire him but the whole chase bit with CG creature felt kinda eh

fact that it doesnt even get mentioned at all makes me think most people almost even forgot it

AND

raid guys in that scene don't fucking fight at all? wuuuuattt

fucking JJ

What was it knowing it's fake.

Think I'm going to go spoiler free for Rouge One and episoide 8.

1, I don't know where that information came from. So source, please?

2, If you want to call her a non-traditional slave, then call her a non-traditional slave. So far, in the Star Wars universe, the only slaves we know about are owned, out-right. So naturally, when you call a star wars character a slave, most people are going to draw natural comparisons to other star wars slaves.

If you think Rey had any, you must also acknowledge that Kylo had like ten years. Or at least some number of years and then ten minus that number spent as an operator. Dude actively worships Vader, for sure he was doing some experimentation on his Order missions at least. Rey gets real far in her first-day experiements. Kylo had years and years.

It is definitely the most out of place part of the movie.

Did they actually cast Harrison Ford for VIII? Or was that to throw people off. I could see maybe some flashbacks or something but no way he lived.
