whats the state of Arkham Knight now? its 21 bucks on funstock but that means no refund if it runs like crap

What are your system specs? It goods now, at least in my opinion - although I never had a problem with it at release either. SLI will never be patched in, so if you have an SLI system don't bother, or you can if you don't mind single GPU.

It's not the discounts that I'm bugged by but I wish the featured deals on the frontpage would be changed more frequent and at much higher numbers per page.

There are just too many games on Steam to just browse through the catalog.

This would have been the perfect opportunity for Valve to iterate on it's already successful discovery system. Surely with more than a year's worth of feedback from users, they would have some ideas on ways that discoverability could be improved on their store front. And knowing Valve, they could have gamified the new feature rollout in a meaningful way that would have us coming back every day.

Instead we got a 2 page comic book.

Time to play some DOWNWELL!

I previously bought:

  • Ryse: Son of Rome
  • Grim Fandango Remastered
  • Audiosurf 2
  • Deponia: The Complete Journey
  • Mass Destruction

I have now bought another few games:

  • Gunpoint
  • This War of Mine
  • Condemed: Criminal Origins
  • DOOM 3: BFG Edition
  • D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die

I was going to grab Life is Strange, but then I noticed that it had a demo. So I think I shall try that out tomorrow and see if it's worth buying.

What's the deal with Pillars of Eternity DLC? I'd get it even with just a 25-30% discount or so, but absolutely 0.

Wondering the same thing. Was hoping to get it before The White March Part II comes out but that seems like a no go. Hopefully they'll have a sale to celebrate the launch of Part II? Otherwise GMG has a 20% off coupon - try that?

They have tied it (use of the queue) to the card drops though - or does that not count for something?

The latest patch increased performance further, added back rain effects and so on. Seems to be solid now.

Has it done anything to improve the inconsistent framerates? Or done anything to improve the experience for those with 2GB of vram?

HINT: it is

It's something, but nothing has really changed. They're just conditioning people to use the available tools, rather than making the available tools better and thus easier and more intuitive to use.

Picked up Kerbal Space Program and Talos Principle. Built my PC last week so my wallet was already hurting. Round 2 when I get paid on the 30th :)

Which version of Rollercoaster Tycoon should I buy? The collection is only $11.24, but is 3 even any good? I could just buy 1 and 2 for less than $6 if those are better. Or hell, if 1 or 2 are the superior game, I'll just snag one of those?

I don't understand the fuss... I have 8 games in my cart and it feels good that I don't feel forced to pull the trigger.

Also... Have any of you guys tried browsing and shit at 9:21 ratio? It feels AMAZING!!!!

Gunpoint is one of my favourite Steam games. FAVOURITE. It gets a lot of flak from some people, I guess for it being sort of "repetitive." It's not like it doesn't get any more difficult. Well, I shouldn't say difficult. Tedious? As you go further along. Buuuut~ I'm for it. Based soundtrack, too.

Also, LiS is more than worth it.

Here's one game I'm going to copy and paste things I previously wrote to try to get some people to try this severely underlooked quality game:

-----

Here's a game I'm currently playing on Steam that is way too overlooked for its own good:

Why Am I Dead At Sea

I'm about 3 hours in right now, and it's been getting very gripping. This game obviously has some Earthbound inspiration, but to explain it briefly, you're a ghost on a ship who is brought to consciousness by a spiritually gifted passenger on the ship to help prevent some sort of terrible occurrence that he senses is approaching the residents of the ship. You can possess people, but only if you know them well and reach a level of understanding how they work. Come to completely understand a person, and you can take full control of them. Each person you possess has a different personality obviously and recognition/relationship with others to allow different dialogue stuff to talk about, but each also has a special ability, ranging from being able to see what's in peoples pockets to being able to tell the tone of the voice someone's voice is in for a line of dialogue (okay, aggravated, hiding something, etc.). Even your spirit self has a special ability to peek into the mindscapes and thoughts of others (which is actually done in a pretty cool way). Featuring multiple endings and branching story possibilities, the game has enjoyable characters, an interesting and twisting story, and actually delivers many unexpected feelings of a range of emotions throughout, and has a really good soundtrack.

And yet it's barely gotten over 1,000 in sales and most don't even know it exists. Deserves WAY more attention.

Here's some screens:

Looks interesting. Might buy.

So i asked about KOTOR earlier. It worked nicely without any need of tweaking (W10).
There's no widescreen or controller support but it didn't bother me. Mouse control is quite nice actually.

I'll probably never finish it. But it's playable.

I'm in the Philippines for x-mas, will I get banned for buying any games in the local currency as opposed to my usual Australian dollar?

It will automatically switch over to your own currency. At least it did for me in the Philippines (despite staying there for several months). It showed the prices in pesos, but as soon as I wanted to buy the games, it switched over. To buy them at fili prices, you would have to get a credit card from there I'm pretty sure was my conclusion in the end.

You need a local payment method to change currencies. Alternatively you can keep buying with Australian $ and your old payment methods.

Ah ok, thanks for the info! Good to know.

With 2GB of VRAM you are taking a gamble still. They said in the latest patch that they fixed some inconsistent framerates, but there are too many variables to account for, you will just have to play and find out - people can only give approximations of how it will perform on your system.

3 gets some hate for being a different engine and having a different graphical style but it's still a great game. As someone who played the shit out of one and two I find myself wanting to play 3 more lately as it just feels more open and I haven't explored it as much.

What are some niche 2015 GOTY candidates that I can pick up?

Contradiction. It's not on sale but hey you can get almost get that holiday card with purchase.

Another is Assault Android Cactus. I don't normally want to spend anything that's not lower than a 50% discount (Undertale and Downwell being the exceptions...and get those too) but I do have my eye on it especially from all the great impressions I read for AAC.

The discovery system is much better these days. Steam just recommended me 10 games because "they are on sale". Without that I wouldn't have much idea which games were on sale during this period of every game being on sale.

2 is the best game, but 3 is the one you'll most likely get fun out of if you just want to chuck some parks together. Go with 3.

Ah true. Good point.

Oh thanks. Will take a look in there. I've already refunded the game though - was just wondering for curiosity's sake.

That's okay. Just going to keep waiting for further price drops.

I bought Cities: Skylines - After Dark, but I'm refunding it since it's cheaper on Amazon.

Besides that, I've also picked up Rocket League, The Beginner's Guide, and Pillars of Eternity.

I've only played Rocket League so far, but it's really good.

I really assumed when they said they were dropping dailies that they were going to have something like personalized discounts, or at least personalized front pages. Imagine instead of having 12 featured games (none of which had featured discounts), they had 3 featured games, then 3 games from your wishlist, then 3 games their discovery algorithm thought you'd like, then 3 games your friends play but you don't. Then they rotated every day. For the GAF hardcore who mine steamdb and use ES and the wishlist and are constantly buying hundreds of games that's not super useful, but I still think it'd be more useful for the average user. And then if you add personalized featured discounts to the mix, that'd be great.

The other idea I had was something using coupons. Imagine if instead of having one standard discount and one featured discount, they had one standard discount, but each game submitted a "targeted custom acquisition discount". A few hundred thousand coupons per game, distributed to users using discovery data to target them. So maybe you get a coupon for Dragon Quest Heroes, and I get a coupon for Squarecells. Which is a way of making it like Dragon Quest Heroes had a featured discount for you, and Squarecells had a featured discount for me.

Okay, now to elaborate; the gamification element could come from that people could trade coupons to get the games they want (of course they might be tempted to buy the games they have coupons for, first)... and a way to really encourage people to spend money would be that if they use up all their coupons without trading, they get more coupons. That's a process that benefits everyone from users looking to buy a single game all the way up to JaseC powerusers. You could even randomize the coupon value a bit, so say if the regular sale price was 40% off and the coupon price was 66% off, you could also generate 50% and 60% coupons. The uncertainty would probably increase sales.

I'm really surprised that given the data they have they go with such a boring approach. I wonder what it is they are seeing that we aren't. Maybe it's the incoming Steam hardware influx that's tying up staff time.

Okay! You all win. Hopefully you are all correct about this one lol

I've just bought all episodes of Life is Strange. I think that is me finished for this sale. Spent just under £50 for 11 games.

Bought:

AoE II HD + expansions
AoM Gold
DA: O - Ultimate Edition
Gothic I-III
Mass Effect 1 and 2
KOTOR
Thief 2
That Jedi-Knight collection

All for like $55, with $10 coming from a KOTOR refund I got when I accidentally bought it before the autumn sale and then forgot to re-buy lol. Pretty satisfied, there's a few more games I'd like but I'm not sold on spending more money right now.
