[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

They're not. I look forward to the EU explanations for this.
I know Star Wars isn't big on scientific accuracy, but that's one big mistake to make if they are light years apart. I call faulty star map.

It makes me think, Starkiller's projectiles are FTL, so should the victims be able to see it coming?

He said on The Graham Norton Show that it would have been weird if all these Stormtroopers speak with an accent and he comes out with an English one, IIRC. He definitely addressed it on the show but I cannot remember 100% what he said.

That was my one quibble with his character, his voice just seemed off. It didn't feel as natural.

I got used to it but its weird.

well no.
She's pretty but not "hot". But she's really pretty.

Whatever you say, champ.

Anyone else think it was weird that Han could just pick up Chewie's bowcaster and use it? I had it in my mind (from either old tech books or the extended universe trash) that bowcasters were Wookie weapons and, as such, were too heavy for most humans to even carry, let alone use properly.

Grandpa's fucking juggling that thing around not once, but twice. Super nitpicky, I know, but it definitely registered as weird while watching the movie.

I still don't like the CG, like the tentacle monsters and the Lincoln Memorial. That dude was humanoid with scars and a weird ear, why couldn't that have been makeup?

Also weird that we never saw what happened to Captain Phasma or whatever her name is. Why wouldn't they just kill her, anyway? They had no issue with killing a million other troopers on the way.

Also Adam Driver was great in this. I have been rewatching girls and I really think that role was key in him getting this.

The general angst that boils over into rage at times is just like adam in the show.

Boyega said he and JJ tried it with his normal accent and were both like, "Yah, that's not gonna work as a stormtrooper."

Nothing wrong with calling out flaws. I have a few personal ones with the film.

I only have a problem when people are condescending to those who like it. They can hate the movie all they want. I hate Fast and Furious movies but I never am rude to people about it.

You're a true fan if you're unwilling to admit that something you like could possibly have flaws.

Of course it has flaws.

Just saying lots of folks miss the forest for the trees.

I've seen too many people just wreck their own enjoyment of something due to their obsession with critique...and out critiquing someone else.

Him destroying the console was awesome. It's been said so many times, but this is exactly how Anakin should have been written.

To give a view from the other side... I had no idea he had an English accent in real life. Didn't really pick up on it in the movie.

Pablo Hidalgo shed some light on this. From his Twitter:

So they're not watching the planets be destroyed, just the impact.

Did he answer how this starkiller base is supposed to move around?
Resistance base seemed awefully conveniently close to Takodana when Leia came to the rescue so when and how did that planet thing move towards the Resistance system? Did the whole flora and fauna on that planet make the jump through hyperspace?

I apologize for the length of my previous post, but I would like for people who really like the structure of the movie to try to address some of it as I feel that it is not just nitpicky stuff but TFA actually violated lots of rules and character relations the OT set up over multiple movies.. I feel like I saw another Indy4 while most people seem to have witnessed at least an Indy 3.
For example: Did that not bother anyone that Chewie (Han's partner in crime for the last 40 years) and Leia had zero scenes together after Han's death? Not even a hug? Chewie just awkwardly stumbles around in a background group scene.

The best part about making that post is I have just as many people saying "great post" as I do saying it is an "awful post."

A literal nitpicking of my use of the word "nitpick." The Internet is full of over generalizations, words being misused, but this is not worth arguing over. I didn't say those being negative weren't entitled to their opinions, I was merely suggesting that it often becomes rather ridiculous.

But hey, that's just, like, my opinion, man.

Wow. I was about to go in on this movie but, looks like a lot of people already did. I didn't like it at all that much. Imo the prequels were so bad that people just wanted to see something they were familiar with.

Kind of reminds me of DC post IC when Johns took over and revamped the silver age.

Sort of how Capcom went back to WW characters after 3S.

That's the feeling I got from this movie.

Kylo Wren
Kylo Wren is the worst dark side user I have ever seen.
Kylo Wren's hair when he takes off the helmet. Lol like it came out of the hair salon(silly nit pick I know).
His voice was cool. I like how it sounded.
Pretty shitty with the lightsaber.
On a sidenote - does this mean we are going to be getting a prequel about Kylo Wren(I'm half serious here)?

The force
The force goes back to being this mystical force that is unexplained and makes users instant lightsaber masters when they close their eyes for a whole 5 seconds.

Han solo
Nothing. Pretty much true to the character. Went out respectably.

Finn
A sanitation storm trooper? huh? Who basically bluffed his way to the starkiller base and figured out how to destroy it? Am I missing something?
Didn't explain really well why he just up and quit on his first mission. Should have been a grander plan than him being the presumable new Han solo character.

Ray
I liked her. When she said "I don't need you to hold my hand to run" was classic.
Don't understand how she instantly knew how to do a mind trick or use a saber competently.

She did no whining and that is good. She really showed up for this one. I hate weak female protagonist. So this is a net positive.

Poe
Not much to say. I liked him. Hope he comes back for more.

Pros
It's Star Wars.
My son loved it.

Cons
See above

You, sir, are wrong, and I will fight you right here, right now. <completely joking> :D

Perhaps I'm getting just a little too philosophical here around the holidays...I like to enjoy things, and I like other people to enjoy things to!

Criticism, while valid and important, can be a tool for the angry and the disenchanted to bring down those who enjoy things for what they are.

Criticism leads to cynicism, cynicism leads to pessimism...pessimism leads to the dar...being a effing douchbag. :D

It shouldn't be that far apart, if one could see Hosnian planets with naked eye, they should be at most light minutes away.

That makes me wonder.

Technically after Starkiller/Death Star destroys a planet you should still be able to see it with a telescope from hundreds of light years away right?

So like, can Leia still look through a telescope when she's standing on the right planet and still see Alderaan?

For example: Did that not bother anyone that Chewie (Han's partner in crime for the last 40 years) and Leia had zero scenes together after Han's death? Not even a hug? Chewie just awkwardly stumbles around in a background group scene.

That's probably one of the biggest flaws of the movie. I can't believe they'd miss such an opportunity.

You know it's possible for people to not like this movie right?

It was the equivalent of blowing up NYC, Washington D.C., and more or less the East Coast metropolitan area.

Dunno how to modify that for other countries, but yeah, that was the seat of government and probably a large portion of the bureaucracy and all of the New Republic that got kablooied.
Poor Luke, everything he did was in vain, the new Republic almost destroyed, his friend killed by his sith wannabe niece, along with his Jedi students, the Empire somehow going strong with a new, more powerful weapon, wannabe Palpatine and Vader commanding the empire, Lukes Beard of Sorrow, his Sister now a widow etc.

Its like some kind of sick joke 😢

He's that angry in the show? I thought it was a comedy

Meh... more Dramady.

My first interaction with that show was walking into the living room where my wife was watching a show with some chick standing in the door with a dude laying in his bed jerking himself off asking her to watch. (The dude being Driver)

Kylo Ren is that guy that throws your gaming controller at your TV, breaking both.

Electronics are afraid of him.

It's probably what he was initially responding to.

I mean, it'd be weird if he read all that truth and then decided "well, I'm going to continue to pursue this bad look anyway, humph" but the call of the hot take can have a strong influence.
What if we took out the term but still feel like her character had no stakes or any prominent flaws in the film.
Is that still fine to say even if there is still some disagreement over whether that's objectively true or whatever?

That's probably one of the biggest flaws of the movie. I can't believe they'd miss such an opportunity.

I didn't like this either. I felt like there should have been one more scene addressing such a big deal.

Maybe the next one opens with Han's funeral or something (will most likely be something completely separate), I don't know. I'd be surprised if they don't address it in some format.

Resistance base seemed awefully conveniently close to Takodana when Leia came to the rescue so when and how did that planet thing move towards the Resistance system? Did the whole flora and fauna on that planet make the jump through hyperspace?

From the databank:

Deep in the Unknown Regions, the First Order has constructed a superweapon that uses an entire planet as its weapons platform. The deadly Starkiller harvests energy from its system’s star, contains it within magnetic fields inside its base’s planetary core, and then converts that energy into an ultra-powerful beam that blasts through hyperspace, able to sterilize the worlds of a distant star system with a single shot. The icy world that houses the Starkiller is the First Order’s greatest secret, and essential to its plan to conquer the galaxy.

I assume that means it didn't have to move. But I think Pablo Hidalgo said it could move to drain new stars.

I love how this movie properly raised the stakes:

- Had Rey not beat Kylo there would be no vendetta against her
- Rey meeting Luke instantly elevates her to legendary status
- Finn getting wrecked by Kylo gives Finn even more of a reason to fight
- Those planets getting destroyed and Han getting killed gives the resistance even more reason to fight

the motivations will be pretty clear for episode 8

- That's kind of the point
- He's supposed to be kind of a silly teenager with style
- Glad you liked his voice
- His lightsaber was supposed to be a junk saber

The force
The force goes back to being this mystical force that is unexplained and makes users instant lightsaber masters when they close their eyes for a whole 5 seconds.

Lightsaber masters? She beat someone who we had never seen fight anyone other than a storm trooper and he almost lost there as well. He was wounded. Additionally, Rey clearly showed she was able to fight before hand. The force in episode 4 basically made Luke a "X-Wing master."

Finn
A sanitation storm trooper? huh? Who basically bluffed his way to the starkiller base and figured out how to destroy it? Am I missing something?
Didn't explain really well why he just up and quit on his first mission. Should have been a grander plan than him being the presumable new Han solo character.

- He was joking. He spent a short amount of time on a sanitation rotation during training.
- He quit because he didn't want to kill innocents and was scared.

Electronics are afraid of him.

Yup, he's playing the scary, pot-smoking, heavy metal, high-school spaz PERFECTLY.

Instead of a bunch of holes punched in the drywall in his room, he's piercing the walls with his lasersword.

Everything Anakin/Hayden should have been in the prequels.

I would disagree somewhat still (though to a lesser degree).

And I would also say that a origin story is not enough to critique at that level when it's clearly a trilogy.

And I would say for flaws you should read the previous post made here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=190242008&postcount=12101
