[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

I think it's pretty obvious that Kylo uses the mask more as a way to hide his insecurities and instill fear and intimidation in others. He wants so badly to be like Vader but knows the truth that he isn't, so he goes so far as to use a literal mask, which can be interpreted as a metaphorical mask as well, to hide behind.

thats the only justification i suppose. but vader took his off when he went good, no? kylo should of been like "well.. i killed off my last connection to the light side, helmet up like grandaddy"

but in my head, i'm thinking... it's cold as fuck, you're about to fight. take your helmet.

whatever, it's just a helmet. good movie.

Did Anakin's force ghost return to the dark side? That would be strange. Why is Anakin's force ghost MIA if not?

He's both dark and light. This is the full quote under the concept art:

Anakin/Vader Ghost "If we see Anakin Skywalker, because he does flow back and forth between Darth Vader and Anakin, let's see him as a character with a dark and light side. The reason Luke is this whole new entity is because he was the first to acknowledge his own dark side--that it was not separate from him."

Yahoo has some of the Star Wars Visual Dictionary. Just reiterating if already posted.

Ultimately, this would be my perfect universe answer to her lineage, especially since you know Kylo Ren is going to be all like, "You're a nobody from nowhere. I'm the Skywalker in this story. That means, I'm the big hero, I get to win, that's how this story goes."

And then of course, she ultimately whomps him anyway.

Maybe that's too meta, I dunno.

That would be amazing. Total 'screw destiny' outcome

Am I alone in thinking the scene of Rey eating outside her hovel and putting the pilot helmet on before hearing BB-8 might be the best of the movie? Just a perfect, quiet character moment that makes her so endearing. That moment and the scene where she pulls the lightsaber out of the snow almost choked me up on my second viewing.

She looked so damn cute with that rebel helmet on.

The beginning of the movie is far and away the best part of the film. It's not even close IMO.

Probably because we all knew it was coming. I wish they hadn't shown it in the trailer tbh.

nah, it woulda still been weird. Just sitting there on a shelf makes it look like a table weight. It'd be more effective if was at a grave site that Kylo visited. But I know that'd be harder to pull off, movie flow-wise

You are not alone. If it isn't my favorite moment it is top 3. She sells the shit out of that whole establishing sequence. Both the rebel helmet fangirl moment, and the "holy shit look how old this lady is what am I doing with my life" moment are pitch-perfect visual character work.

100% correct. Her in that helmet tells you so much. I also loved the reveal that her home is a downed AT-AT

Two viewings in, I really can't put it any better than this: I think she's Luke's daughter, all the pieces are there for her to be Luke's daughter via any number of explanations. If she isn't Luke's daughter I will be truly surprised. So I won't be disappointed if she is, but it's legitimately exciting to consider the possibility that she's not.

If all of the hints thus far are in service of a red herring, then I bit down on that herring hard and am being reeled in.

This trailer will, frankly, be an enormous misdirect if no new characters are revealed to be related to Luke Skywalker.

Then again, if the eventuality comes to pass that Luke adopts a wholly unrelated Rey as his daughter... the repurposing of those lines from Jedi will actually be even more powerful.

...I got goosebumps while typing that, lol
I think as someone pointed out earlier in the thread it'sentirely possible those lines from the trailer are directed at a young Ben Solo training to be a jedi.

I think it's the only other great quiet character moment in the entire series apart from ANH's binary sunset.

Were the names "Kira", "Sam", "Jedi Killer" originally the names, code names, or both?

The art book refers to the characters by those titles even on pieces that seem pretty close to final.

I think they were original names turned into codenames because the art department was used to them for so long.

Also, Rey was even called Thea at one point as shown in the opening concept storyboards

Also they are ripped straight out of a previous film

Lucasfilm has reaffirmed the Episodes are about the Skywalker family. They will absolutely make episodes 10-12 and probably more. Unless Kylo gets redeemed and has a kid, the Skywalker family line ends with this trilogy. The other option is Luke has a child that isn't Rey. Which could happen, but why build up Rey so much in this film?

Soley about the Skywalker family? We can clearly see that Luke, Leia, and Ben are key characters already. Han, Obi-Wan, Yoda, the emperor, Lando, etc aren't Skywalkers in the OT. If Rey is a Skywalker and they go up to a 4th trilogy and its still only about Skywalker families that is just lame with such a massive unexplored galaxy of characters to be tapped in to.

It really is. I loved those establishing shots at the start of the film and that scene right there was so well done. Like you said, just a quiet moment for her character before things get going.

That should have been in the movie. They couldn't afford to pay Hayden Christenson?
Probably not a good idea to have Hayden in this one

I would not be against the idea of Rian Johnson redeeming Hayden in episode 8 as a force ghost and actually get a good peformance outta him lol

Also the trailer isn't text so let's not read it as text. Trailers also include things like Maz handing Luke's saber to Leia.

The theater that I'm going to see it in tomorrow:
Dx7z3Rs.png

(greyed out means completely sold out)

Wild stuff.

It's sitting at $288 million (as of Monday). I bet when Tuesday's box office returns are announced, it will be over $300 million. $300 million in six days! I can't imagine what the numbers will look like after New Year's weekend. This weekend, next week, and next weekend (New Year's Weekend) will do huge for the movie, especially with kids out of school. Could it be at $600 million by that point? I think it's possible.

That should have been in the movie. They couldn't afford to pay Hayden Christenson?

Either this concept has been cut or they are exploring this in episode 8. And honestly I'd rather they save something like this if they are doing it for episode 8.

I would make sense if Luke communed with his father or if Kylo since the events of 7 grew his skills to communicate with "Vader"

personally, the further these films are from the PTs the better. No Hayden in TFA is fine by me, especially since he couldn't act his way out of a paper bag in the PTs. We're already dealing with Carrie Fisher's "acting" for at least one more film, i dont need more turds in these movies

Plus, it makes Kylo buying into the myth of Vader better, like a teenager obsessed with a rockstar.

Where did I say soley? But the spinoff movies are for exploring more of the universe.

Here's Kathleen Kennedy's quote:

“The Saga films focus on the Skywalker family saga,” she explains. “The stories follow a linear narrative that connects to the previous six films. The Force Awakens follows Return of the Jedi and continues that generational story. The Anthology films offer opportunities to explore fresh characters, new storylines and a variety of genres inside the Star Wars universe.”

Nah, I'd think would've been pretty hamfisted if they included it, and they realized that.

That and Hayden Christensen being the Force Ghost of Anakin doesn't make sense and I hate the fact that Lucas changed that in the 2004 remaster of ROTJ. Whoever plays him in the sequel trilogy should be an older actor around the age of Anakin when he died at the end of ROTJ (since it obviously can't be Sebastian Shaw anymore).

South Florida. This is the only true IMAX theater in the area, and they only have one theater. There's a Regal across the street from me with 40-kagillion theaters and they have plenty of seats this weekend, but only have a LieMAX screen and are only showing 3D on it. Though indeed, the initial showing I went to at that Regal and the three that followed it (up into 1:30AM Friday) were all 100% sold out too.

Yeah, full IMAX screen, 70mm <3

Is that the MODS? I saw it there Saturday. It was incredible!

I REALLLY hope that isn't the case. That would be the least satisfying answer to the riddle IMO. The context of those lines, not just how they're repurposed in the trailer, but when Luke first says them in Jedi, is revealing to the person he's talking to that the two of them are related. There's really no reason at all that Ben Solo wouldn't understand even as a fairly young child that Luke was his uncle. He knows that Leia is his mother and that Anakin is his grandfather.
Is that the MODS?
hells yeah, one of my favorite spots in the galaxy.

Hayden's shortcomings had a lot to do with the script Lucas right and his direction. Hayden was excited at the potential to play a young Darth Vader. Lucas pretty much told him to be whiny. He wouldn't even let him improvise.

Under a new direction I wouldn't mind seeing him but this whole concept with him has to be pulled off flawlessly though.

The beginning of the movie is far and away the best part of the film. It's not even close IMO.

It and the Han/Kylo/Rey scenes near the end are absolutely where the movie peaks. On my second watch the Maz section of the film actually played better but once they get to the Resistance base everything feels rushed. Han's scene with Kylo and the lightsaber duel are the only moments allowed to breathe in the second half of the film. I think Episode VII might really benefit from an extended cut.

Asked in the other thread but might as well ask here: is it confirmed that Rian is directing IX? Nothing seems official so wondering where that came from.

EDIT: WRITING

sorry

I have a bad feeling I'm going to be fighting the Rey is a Skywalker speculation for a long time just because it's interesting and then VIII proves me wrong in like the first five minutes.

Rian is doing VIII, Colin Trevorrow is doing IX

Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

Amazing scene, everything on Jakku was incredible.

Could for work for a disembodied voice cameo like Ewan

Luke: "She reminds me a lot of myself."

Obi-wan: "Like all of us in fact."

Anakin: "But she hopefully won't make the same mistakes."

I prefer my villains with better motivations than teenage obsession. Episode 8 will have to do a lot to redeem Episode 7, which wasn't necessary with a little more storytelling.
