RE: Kylo not taking the helmet.

Perhaps he felt like he didn't need it anymore? He took "the next step" by offing his father, maybe he felt like he didn't need to lean on the Vader-style image afterward.
On second viewing, this is definitely what they were going for. It wasn't executed perfectly but, I shall dramatize it for you:

"I'm Kylo on the bridge, there's light side stuff in me but you can't see it cause of my super awesome Vader cosplay i'm so dark DARK SIDE DARK SIDE!"

"BEN! Take off your goddamn helmet!"

*takes helmet off" "omg Dad now you can see all the light side bits in me it's tearing me apart" >_<

(This is bluntly symbolized by the light of the dying star shining through the window and illuminating Ben's maskless face while the rest of him is dark).

"But Dad, u can help me?"

"Sure whatever just let go of the fucking lightsaber"

(All light is drained from the star; Ben's face is left in shadow. Now he knows that he is truly Kylo Ren, he has made his choice and embraced the dark side. He no longer needs the mask to hide his uncertainty and susceptibility to the light).

(HAN SOLO IS KILL).

"Now I am UberDark Kylo Ren, nothing will stand in my way for REAL this time, and I won't be needing to hide anymore."

--

Thing is of course, making that choice is nothing without the discipline it demands. His emotions still absolutely rule him and he's not channeling his rage or hatred, just letting them drive and, as we all know, leaving him with a bunch of saber wounds and one last failure.

they brought back ewan mcgregor, they'll bring back hayden christiansen

At the same time, I think his role will just be revealing Rey's a skywalker or something, and then kylo ren beating the shit out of another room when he learns she got to see Vader's ghost.
A single line from McGregor for a vague and chaotic sequence vs the voice AND likeness of christiansen for important storytelling is a whole nother beast of bravery all things considered.

How is it confusing? That's his father before he "died", If someone long gone I love appears in front me as a ghost, the last thing I would give a shit about is why he doesn't look like the completely weak and frail cancer patient I saw die.

well the point was that he never saw his father when he was young, he saw him with his helmet off at the end begging his son to let him look at him with his own eyes, mere moments after pulling back to the light and killing the emperor.

I dunno, i feel like putting in his younger version doesnt even make sense given that that's the version that went on a rampage and killed a whole village of sand people out of anger, that's the version that helped wipe the jedi off the map. You can argue that he was at his purest light when he saved luke and sacrificed his own life to bring balance to the force.

If they use an Anakin ghost, they're getting Christensen. They're not gonna recast. They had Ben's voice and got McGregor.

We'll see. McGregor's performance was well received and he is a good actor, Christensen's acting was almost universally panned and the majority of adult fans do not like his addition to ROTJ.

They can easily say that as Anakin did not know the secret to becoming a ghost, his spirit form faded over the last 30 years becoming more of a phantasm that shifts between light and dark. The idea of a 30-something, Jedi robe-wearing Christensen talking to Mark Hamill just makes me cringe.

The justification for Anakin looking young doesn't make any sense anyway, if he died when he was 25 then who threw the Emperor down the shaft? Anakin and Darth Vader are the same person, Darth Vader is not a demon that possessed Anakin's corpse. That ghost is just Lucas trying to make a crude visual connection to the PT and making up a stupid explanation later.

But Ewan McGregor was the only person who put in any effort in the PT. Of course they brought him back if they could.

I also never really minded Hayden's force ghost in ROTJ, because Sebastian Shaw was in like 10 seconds of the ROTJ and Hayden Christiansen was in like 3 hours of the PT. IDK, its a pointless addition like everything in the remasters, but it doesn't really bother me in any real way.

We'll see.

They're not gonna recast Christensen, man.

If anything, should Johnson actually go with bringing Anakin's ghost back in his movie, they should take the time to reshoot that Ewok Celebration plate so they can get an appropriate goodbye moment from him instead of the leering costume test head they pasted over the top of Shaw's.

It is, which is why he should have kept the mask

If you recognize the point why are you still missing it

Are most of us still on the "hate colin trevorrow train"?

I wasn't a big fan of Jurassic World but hating the guy for a film you don't like seems a bit over the top.

He wouldn't have been my first choice to direct though. After TFA I'd rather JJ returned or Rian did IX as well. As long as the broad strokes of the story are coming from Rian, I feel more confident in the film.

You seem to have forgotten McDiarmid.

I can't believe fucking Rian Johnson is directing what is likely to be the darkest Star Wars movie of the trilogy. It's going to be incredible and I can't wait to see his take on all that JJ has left for him.

Nah.

Jurassic World sucked, but it was a big studio production that sounds like a mess. It had like 4 screenwriters, and there are rumblings of a decent amount of studio interference.

His first film, Safety Not Guaranteed, is totally great. It's a charming little indie that captures early Spielberg-style heart much better than Abrams managed to in Super 8. It's not the most amazing film ever, but it's sweet, fun, and was critically acclaimed.

If they aged Christensen to look 50 something I would be fine with that, at least it would fix the story hole George made by saying Anakin died 30 years before ROTJ.

Little is known about Star Wars: Episode VIII, except that it's going to be directed by Rian Johnson and that the script is so good, J.J. Abrams reportedly regrets not signing onto the project.

This little tidbit of information comes from one of Abrams closest friends and collaborators Greg Grunberg (who also happens to play a pilot in The Force Awakens). According to an interview with Grunberg in the Washington Post, Abrams read the script for the eighth movie and thought it was so good that he regretted not signing on to direct the movie.

"He read it and said something he never, ever says," Grunberg said. "He said, 'It's so good, I wish I were making it.'"

I mean, fuck

We've got a man who went on The /Filmcast, a popular movie podcast, and found erotic slashfiction written about the three co-hosts, and then proceeded to read it aloud to them as they awkwardly giggled and groaned.

This is the man directing the next Star Wars film and it will be glorious.

thats the only justification i suppose. but vader took his off when he went good, no? kylo should of been like "well.. i killed off my last connection to the light side, helmet up like grandaddy"

but in my head, i'm thinking... it's cold as fuck, you're about to fight. take your helmet.

whatever, it's just a helmet. good movie.

Totally. Regardless of the psychological reasons behind the mask, you'd think it would provide a protective advantage in combat. I just assumed, after killing his own father and getting shot with the most OP rifle in the galaxy, he probably wasn't thinking 100% clearly and his helmet was the last thing on his mind after seeing Finn and Rey.

Indeed I did. If they have a reason to put him in the newer movies, I wouldn't be surprised if they do.

Biggest disappointment for me from the movie was Admiral Ackbar had SHITTY lines.

Episode 7 blew my mind. Can't wait for 8. Star Wars is back!!!!

I hope his defeat will get him to put the mask back on. As soon as I started to like his modulated voice he stopped wearing the helmet. Maybe the injury to his face will be as bad as it looked.

I hope so. he's got nothing but pure garbage on his resume. honestly, Safety Not Guaranteed might be even worse than Jurassic World

Mmm.. Yes. That universally reviled piece of trash.

There was something really beautiful about the prequels.

If they're doing older time period movies in the off years, I would still love an Obi-Wan solo film at some point. Doesn't even have to be some big thing, could just be a smaller story about a mission Obi-Wan undertook at some point that perfectly captures what he's all about.

Like someone discovers Luke when he's still a tiny child and Obi-Wan has to hunt the guy down before he can alert the empire. Would be interesting to see how Obi-Wan coped with the collapse of his whole way of life in the wake of Revenge of the Sith. Also good because it would mean Ewan being a little older would be expected of the story.

McGregor is such a good Obi-Wan it seems a shame he never got a really good movie to play the character in. And he's just so damn cool. I have a huge man crush of Ewan McGregor.

I sure hope that's not just damage control on J. J.'s part.

A lot of The Force Awakens clings on the success of the next movie given the fact that we have so many questions that haven't been answered yet.

If the next films suck then The Force Awakens will be retroactively worse for the lack of decent explanations for what happens.

Kind of like Lost...

When this movie is breaking the records it is and with a higher review average than most Oscar contenders, the last thing JJ is going to be compelled to do is work any sort of damage control. He's not reading GAF.

The problem here is that he needed help killing Han. He couldn't do it by himself, so he's still just a poser. Somewhere earlier in the thread, someone posted the novelization text that said something like while pursuing Finn & Rey, he was kind of having an internal panic that the tug of the light didn't go away when Han was stabbed.

the only positive thing I can truly say about the prequels without any doubt is that I liked how it didnt shy away from expanding the universe in a big bad way

so many new designs of new things. robots, ships, planets, etc.

VII particularly didnt have any of that but it worked cause by being so broad star wars had lost a bit of its way so this film being a bit claustrophobic (no real sense of space, travelling at hyperspeed the whole time, moving from ground to ground) actually helped it regain its focus

but, yeah, I like new stuff and the prequels didnt shy away from opening up the universe tenfold

uhh hopefully he refers to that?

Rian Johnson has said:

I hope he's just licking ass with that quote. If not I find it most disturbing.

Maybe he means beautiful in the sense that they were admirable yet monumental failures.

Exactly and this isn't JJ saying it to the media. It's a 2nd hand comment from a friend.

We won't know how good it is until May 2017.

you watch any Rian Johnson film and it falls much more in line with what JJ did here than with the prequels, I mean it aint hard.

I expect some random big anime parallels, at least in like a cool visual or character. Dude has cowboy bebop, akira, etc plastered all over his every work.

Kind of like Lost...

After the pilot, Abrams left Lost's storytelling primarily to Damon Lindelof, who couldn't write a convincing doctor's note, much less a compelling (or competent) story.

I find his faith in lacking movies...disturbing.

If my read on his character is right, he probably LOVES that he has a "legit" reason to wear the mask now. Even if the scar is superficial. He be like "I am deformed now. None may look upon my visage. A creature of darknesssssss"

Not just a Vader wannabe, also a Doctor Doom wannabe...
