[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

After just watched for the third time i can safely say that Kylo Ren is this movie's weak spot.
No way, hahaha. I'm at a loss. I mean really even if you feel strongly that you dislike his character, at least the movie got you to feel strongly about him. He's an actual character which to an extent is more than I expected. Especially when compared to A New Hope and the character of Vader at the time.

The weakpoints are the over-reliance on beat-for-beat mimicking the plot of A New Hope, the whole Starkiller destruction/trench mission sequence, the quality of Snoke's CG (willing to reserve judgment since he's a hologram for the moment), the traditional coincidence/plot hole stuff, Captain Phasma's bizarre lack of anything at all to do, the extreme pace with which Rey accelerates to capable force-user, the general ambiguity of the setup of the Republic/First Order/Resitance in the new canon, and sadly, the score (which is more than competent but not outstanding).

Shit, I'd be down for them just revealing Luke's her father in the title crawl. Just make it a non-thing. And then as you said, the issue of her Mother and what happened to her prior to Jakku is the focus of the sequel.

I mean, we're all assuming there'll be a time skip. If that's the case, and Luke is her father, stands to reason they'll bring that shit up relatively quickly after they meet.

I don't think we are, actually. They shot additional footage on that island for Ep VIII and you have to wonder where that all fits in. They've always done a time skip, but that strikes me as another thing for Johnson to potentially subvert. We have 18 months until we see this thing and there's no announced EU content that takes place between the episodes.

It could go either way.

Or Darth Maul, or Count Dooku (to a lesser extent) or Grievous, Kylo Ren is the first villain to have any sort of character beyond badass to be fought and maybe killed.

She and Rey felt each other's grief over Han's death at the end of movie. That's probably the best scene her sensitivity's ever been put to use in, too.

I'm sure she's plenty sensitive, but being sensitive and taking to lightsaber combat are probably reasonably different things.

And like MMarston says, she's busy, it's not like Luke is around now, etc.

Heh Leias grief let her walk right passed chewie and hug Rey deeply. Man that was awkward to me.

If there is no time skip I just want a Doc Brown Back to The Future 2 moment where Luke says hes been to a Jedi Rejuvenation Clinic and pulls off a mask to explain why he looks a lot better in the space of two minutes ;)

"Sorry to pull my face mask off Rey but I was afraid you wouldn't recognise me"!!

Was it really?

The second Han died, Chewie shot Han's son right in the gut. No hesitation. If you hurt Han, Chewie will fuck you up. Stands to reason that when Han left, Chewie stopped giving a shit about Leia. As Han's best bro, is that really surprising? And given the implication that Ben was turned a long time ago, it's highly likely Chewie hasn't seen Leia in 20 years.

You're not wrong. But he's still more annoying than they are. I'd rather have a badass and cool non-character like Darth Maul, than a lame character like Kylo Ren. :D

Ideally we'd get a badass cool character like Darth Vader. Hopefully the next films will have that.

Kylo Ren was cool, but his power levels were inconsistent. At the beginning of the movie he was a god of death and destruction (that moment when he stops a blaster's blast was beyond awesome) and then he gradually becomes more and more of a jobber culminating with the defeat at the hands of a total newbie in the Force ways. Yes, he was wounded by Chewie's huge blaster, but he was showing signs of weakness before.

I want to believe his downgrade was due to him having doubts and getting weak in the knees after seeing Solo (as we all got) and not due to writing inconsistencies.

Not sure I'd want Rey to be Luke's kid.

Obviously it wasn't intentional but the way Hamill played Luke always seemed kind of ace to me. I'd rather he stayed that way.

I'm not sure where in the film they even imply that.

You may be onto something...

The grudge that doesn't give up.

Not sure where they don't.

That's not how it works.

a) Han dies.
b) Chewie and Rey return to the resistance base.
c) Chewie and Leia walk past each other without a glance.

Maybe they cut some stuff, but what we see on screen clearly postulates they don't give a shit about each other. And it was edited that way accordingly. But who knows, maybe they'll explore it in a comic or a book.

1. Movie logic - they find Rey THAT easily on such a massive base? (Starkiller near the end) I guess it's as believable as all the other convenient movie logic scenes where characters find each other or locations.

I actually thought that was one of the most believable encounters. Finn knows the layout of the base. He would know where prisoners are held. So that's where the rescue squad goes. She gets out by herself and wouldn't be able to get too far away on foot, so it makes sense that they'd be in the same general area.

You tend to never forget the bitch that called you a walking carpet.

Now it's pretty much canon in my head that when Han and Leia had their blow-up argument about Ben, Leia slapped Han. Chewie saw red and Han had to hold him back. Leia told them both to leave and never come back. Han and Chewie stormed out.

HAN: Women...
CHEWIE: RHRTJHGHGHGHGG
HAN: Take it down a notch, Chewie.
CHEWIE: RHRH

Coming next summer: "Chewies Struggle" - a nine part mini series explaining the history and back story as to why Chewie and Leia didn't look at each other at the end of TFA!!

J/K
maybe not

See, here's the thing. I was sure about Rey being Luke's daughter for the longest time. After the movie ended I was like, huh. It wasn't confirmed. So unless they have a great reason to reveal it later, I'm not sure it's going to be the case. I mean it would have to be a unique and strong reveal because most seem to already suspect it.

Thus, if they pretend like it's a huge twist, it's gonna fall flat on its ass unless, again, the execution is mindblowing. And with the criticisms this one is getting for mirroring some of ANH's points, the last thing they need to do is have another "I am your father" scene. And if so, may the Force be with Rian.

Agreed, also it doesn't help that he starts to act like a whiny angry kid about halfway in the movie, the guy is almost 30 years old, give me a break lol.

Chewbacca and Leia hugged earlier in the movie. I imagine they didn't want TFA to become Star Wars Episode VII: Chewie and Leia Passionately Embrace.

Could be that the Skywalker blood is just plain cursed, and Luke will get Rey to a position where she can successfully kickstart the Jedi order again.

That's what I think too. JJ has personal experience from Lost on how the internet will chew up and analyze every little thing. Rian's very savvy on these things too. No way these guys are all "Man, it's going to blow everyone's minds when we reveal that Luke is Rey's father! They'll never see it coming."

If you go that route you reveal it in Episode 7.

They are going to swerve in a different direction.

I'd say for me, Rey is the best Star Wars related thing to happen in a long time, mainly because of the insane amount speculation of both her past and future.

There'll be crickets in the cinema if she's a Kenobi.

Pretty much everyone I talk to who has seen the movie outside of the internet seems to be convinced Rey is Lukes kid. My anecdotal evidence leads me to believe anything but, will have people surprised. I still think its possible but the more I read other theories the less I think she is his kid.at first I was like yeah thats cool, Lukes kid. Now I think I will be disappointed if thats the case.

She's amazing, honestly, she's my favorite thing to happen to the Star Wars series since a long time. It makes the series so refreshing.
