Can someone in the know (so probably everyone on here) explain the difference between a sith and a force-using grandson of a sith that's skilled in the dark arts? What would make him a sith?

Hot Toys just unveiled two more figures from the Star Wars line:

Hot Toys Finn and First Order Riot Control Stormtrooper - $359.99

Sith is more or less a belief system/religion.

Essentially, right now Kylo is like, presbyterian. His granddad was catholic. Kylo apparently doesn't want to be a sith at all (and neither does Snoke, it seems) likely because they believe pursuing that belief system didn't help out Palpatine & Skywalker all that well.

Expressionless Finn is expressionless.

I know it's a toy but he's just not anywhere near stoic in the film so it's weird.

Am I a humorless stick-in-the-mud for hating the whole emo Kylo thing?

It really annoys the hell out of me that people are reacting this way to a villain with good depth and complexity. Just because he doesn't fit into a two-dimensional typical badass bad guy archetype doesn't mean he's LOL EMO. Emo is typically whiny but without the ambition or courage to change or deal with what is troubling you - this is not Ren.

Besides, the whole emo joke thing is so early 2000s

I don't blame you for not liking it but in this day and age, people are dying to create memes so it should be expected.

It's thoughtless shorthand carried over from when people heard someone say it about Tobey Maguire in the third Spider-Man, basically.

Who was actually not even "emo" in that movie at all. He was more like a douchebro.

It's such a lazy "joke" and yet people are sharing that crap all over social media like its the funniest thing ever. It's like mindless Reddit humor.

I wasn't really bothered at all like some people at "ugh, ANOTHER death star?", but the fact that in a universe where no less than three massive death rays can be built, there are still no precautions or countermeasures to defend against this? Where is the galactic nuclear arms race? Why is such a massive undertaking always come as a surprise? How does word never spread of their construction?

It was kinda just annoying how easily they get away with destroying Coruscant(?) and all nearby planets with like no form of opposition at that point. And heck, they never even made any demands or attempts at negotiations, it was just "those guys don like us, fuck em". What is their endgame? Just a lonely universe by themselves? Snoke better give us tons of Sith lore to help explain the motivation behind all these decades supervillain assholery.
The first two Death Stars were constructed while the Rebellion was horribly fractured. The Rebels also did destroy the second Death Star before it was completed, the only surprise being that the Empire managed to get it operational before that.

As for Starkiller, maybe the fact that it was a planet being converted into a station helped throw off the scent? I dunno.

There is so much marketing and merchandise showing Finn with the lightsaber, despite Rey clearly being the one powerful in the force throughout the movie. Does she ever even use her stick to fight? It's kinda bizarre.

Are they purposely portraying Finn as a jedi? If they are, is it meant as misdirection, or failed ambiguity? or is it an effort to destroy the idea that lightsabers are super special unique weapons and a sacred tradition only trained jedi can use? Cuz I'm all for that. And the whole idea that jedi are special invincible superheroes, that never really meshed to me with the concept of the force being this thing that is apparently in everything and everyone everywhere binding them all together.

Yeah, they showed it in the marketing, too.

She meets Finn by hitting him in the face with it.

I'm guessing since the toys released before the movie, they didn't want to ruin Rey's awakening scene?

Just read that Rey IS Luke's daughter. In TFA Disney Infinity, Kylo says "face me, cousin!"

Lol Disney even reached out to the guy that made the video and asked him to take it down. 😁
He says "face me, curses!"

That doesn't make sense.

It sounds like "Cousin" to me.
This is unambiguously not a thing. If you really care enough to not take my word for it, click here and play it at 0.5x speed (and watch what is happening on screen): https://youtu.be/TNXRZd5vkdo?t=1230

It's extremely obvious once you see it.

The only thing we know for sure that they want is to destroy Luke Skywalker.
the beginning...

Well during the OT, The Empire is literally a Dictatorship. The Death Star wasn't created to destroy The rebellion as much as it was created to stamp out any resistance whatsoever. Palpatine wanted to conquer the entire Galaxy and hadn't quite done that yet.

TFA's WMD was created during a period of rebuilding on the part of The Galactic Republic and there was technically a Non-Agression Treaty between them and The First Order. Since it is the Star Wars Universe and the Republic Senate is as large and unwieldy as it is, I wouldn't be surprised if they were damn near completely useless due to bloated bureaucracy, having not at all learned their lesson from Palpatine's manipulation. So basically the Senate is so bogged down in Politics that they're not bothering to pay attention or look out for actual threats.

Hence why Leia and other Rebellion leaders splintered off and fight The First Order as a completely separate entity from The Republic.

That's part of why I find it so dreadfully unfunny. It comes off as so desperate.

The jokes are also just plain not funny. What can you do though? /shrug

I rewatched the Yavin IV Deathstar assault and it really stands out how shitty the X-Wing elements are in this film. There's zero tension in any of them.

So I'm trying to get my head around whether Finn is force sensitive or not. There are a couple of subtle suggestions that he is (or isn't)

- He manged to wield a lightsaber pretty well and injure (a weakened) Kylo during his final fight.
- Maz seemed to sense something about him, then drifted off and said it was his eyes.
- During the first few scenes, after the civilians are executed, Kylo seemed to be fixated on Finn, could have been the force or simply coincidence.
- He has ACE aiming skills for someone that has never piloted a blaster on a ship before.. Him and Rey worked together almost too perfectly ie the Force.
- When Starkiller base fired its weapons, he could literally hear the screaming people and was one of the first to notice it.

Obviously this is pure speculation, but it'd be nice if we had a non-Skywalker for a change become a main line Jedi.
To add to that, his "brainwash" literally wore off it seemed like when the force started to "awaken" in the beginning. Doesn't make sense that he was the only trooper that became immune to the brainwash after everything started to unfold and the force started to shift its weight. Im not saying that he'll eventually become a Jedi, but I will say that I believe he is atleast force sensitive in the same way Princess leia is imo.

This, and I believe he will be a jedi. It doesn't make sense that there was all these Jedi in the past. Even tons of younglings that were training and then have only 1 known Jedi (3 if you count Obi and Yoda) in the OT and now this new trilogy. Just doesn't make sense. There obviously has to be a ton of force sensitive people out there. They just haven't been trained or made aware of it. Besides, there's been an awakening, have you felt it?

Hell Luke was even training Jedi. I wonder how they found these force sensitive kids

It was misdirection.

anything involving the spaceship battles was the most forgettable part of the film to me, I think the lackluster music was a big part of this too.

What?

That shit had me on edge when I did the rewatch last week. That and the music hyped it up. Then when Han makes that saving shot:

I'm glad I managed to see it in 2D for my first viewing because seeing it a second time in IMAX I must say the 3D was terrible. With the possible exception of scenes with the Star Destroyer, the 3D difference was at best negligible and at worst distracting.

Yes. That Star Destroyer Scene was the only one where I actually realized it's 3D. 3D not really necessary for this movie
