[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

I genuinely think people who believe ep 8 is a film where Luke is just going to train Rey are in for a shock.

This aint your OT Luke and they are not going to rehash empire.

I think they are going to take it in a whole new direction.

No, it's not your OT Luke, but that doesn't mean they aren't going to rehash Empire. I bet Luke is going to be the Yoda of this new trilogy. Yoda went into exile when Anakin turned to the dark side and killed young
ling
students. Luke went into exile when Kylo turned to the dark side and killed young students. Poetry runs deep in this franchise.

Now, personally I am okay with this. TFA didn't feel like a rehash to me because there are enough differences in terms of characters and directorial style, and I imagine Ep 8 will be the same.

the biggest question: Would Hayden Christian's acting have improved had he been directed by JJ Abrams?

I don't know if his acting would have improved, but I'm pretty sure his character would have improved under anyone else. He played a decent whiny stalker creep, which I assume is what Lucas wanted. It's just not what the character needed to be.

I could certainly be wrong but for me the scene where the two of them found the Falcon and shot down the the fighters was a big clue they were both force sensitive. The part where they were talking over each other about how great their respective flying and shooting was, they didn't realise the force had aided them. That was my reading anyway.

Finn being force sensitive would also explain how he completely overcame Stormtrooper brainwashing

When you say the Jedi philosophy, do you mean the philosophy of the Jedi Order from the PT? I'd assume that he would already have been at odds with it considering his path to victory is through his attachments to his father. Hopefully they don't try to have Luke re-establish the Jedi Order by directly lifting the same rules during the 30 year gap, since the point of the prequels (partially) is that the Jedi are wrong in their dogma.

Yeah, I mean whatever's canon, honestly. I'm sure you have a better view of it than I do. And I'm sure he'll disagree, I'm just curious to what extent that'll go. I want to know specifically he thinks she be dissolved and what should be preserved.

How old was Palpatine in RotJ? I think it would work if it was explained that both Palpatine and Plagueis were using dark side magic to maintain some sort of immortality. That as a sith you basically become voldemort, living forever as this wretched disfigured creature. But the Jedi can live forever by dying and coming back as handsome young omnipotent force ghosts. (especially if they get Ewan McGregor to cameo in ep VIII)

He is not a concept from the OT, Kasdan doesn't know him. There is no way they would have thought of him when laying down the overall trilogy arc. At this point he is just at the same level than JJB and the midichlorians bs.
But I wouldn't be surprise if at some point, in the next episodes, there will be some stuff related to the force ability to resurrect people.

Michael Arndt wrote the first draft of this story though, not Kasdan. I have no idea what I can thank to Kasdan and what Arndt deserves credit for. Kasdan isn't even writing the next one... so as far I'm concerned, the door still remains open. There's definitely some parallels out there that make you go, wait.... but that's not to say it's a forgone conclusion.

Having him there would be cool shoutout to people who want, if they don't I don't care. It would cool regardless of where they take this old Sith.

I think that's why he was seeking the 1st Jedi temple. 2 Jedi orders have failed from within to the Dark side.

I'm pretty convinced Finn is force sensitive having seen the movie a second time. Luck is definitely on his side, to a ridiculous extent - and Obi Wan is on record saying that "there is no such as luck." The scene where he seemingly hears the screams of a destroyed planet is obviously reminiscent of Obi Wan's scene in A New Hope. And there has to be a reason why every other storm trooper is seemingly brainwashed to the point of no return, but he's able to maintain free thought and morality without their being any kind of signs or symptoms in the evaluations that the First Order run on him.

As much as I'd like this to be true...I feel like that was just editing.

I'm not trying to get my hopes up about it.

I was certain that scene meant they were both force sensitive when I first saw it.

I'm not saying Finn is Force Sensitive but the fact that there has been an "awakening" in the force to me at least implies it's more than just Rey.

I'm just saying I'd be down for Finn being force sensitive like Leia is, leaving Poe as the no force connection Han Solo character of the new trio

There's definitely a lot to suggest him being force sensitive, but it could easily just be us molding the narrative to our wishes :P

With respect to that scene, I hope Rey and Finn aren't separated for too long. The characters are definitely at their best when they share the same screen. Pretty good chemistry between Ridley and Boyega.

This. I honestly don't even want him to be a Jedi but to have his force sensitivity help him in other avenues. Hell just using it to sense danger would be good enough.

I wonder if Luke even trained any jedis to use lightsabers. I think not, just like even the knights of Ren don't have any. Might just be something you can really manage to do with a lot of skills, and maybe Luke wouldn't even feel the need for any, Yoda-like. Now he's presented with his old saber and that brings back to his mind how he has to fight, can't run away.

I actually somewhat enjoyed Obi-Wans mission in AotC, on my most recent rewatch. The rest of the film is indeed (still) terrible -- any scene with Anakin is neigh-on unwatchable, and it also has the worst climactic battle of the saga, with 3PO managing to be more annoying than Jar Jar was in TPM and Yoda being completely ruined. But the Kamino stuff was kind of okay.

That actually puts it above RotS for me, where I honestly didn't enjoy anything. The lows aren't quite as low as in Clones, to be sure, but there's nothing I liked (the very end, with its blatant ANH callbacks, actually come closest).

When I think of Obi Wan's mission I just think of:
1) Backwards thinking/logic about protecting Padme to begin with
2) No real objection to sending Anakin off alone utterly against senses he should have
3) Bad CGI cloners/environement
4) Kid Boba Fett (ugh)
5) An awesome fight on Kamino VS Fett that is the best fight in the prequel trilogy, to be fair
6) Inept infiltration that leads to capture and a weirdly half-assed attempt to turn him to the dark side from Dooku.

I mean, there's good bits, but damn. At least Sith doesn't contradict itself quite so much or just make characters look mega stupid (apart from their complete failure to identify Palpatine as the Sith).

I don't think it's crazy to consider it. There's a lot of stuff that points to it, as you mention. It would certainly the help with the quick conversion.

JJ and Kasdan have apparently set the great lines of what will happen in the trilogy.
I have big doubts he will be in it now that I know he is a very late concept.
But yeah, I don't think he would hurt the story if well done.

He has no canonical age but in the old EU he was 86 or 87 when he died.

I wish Disney would come out with a list of what is Canon now when it comes to novels, comics, games, series, etc.

I was at Barnes and Noble earlier and was looking through some of the Star Wars books. I know a few of the books that are official canon but then there were some that seemed like it but I wasn't sure.

For example, the Darth Bane books (which I heard were great) on the back have Disney and Lucasfilm logos. Also say published in 2014. I heard anything from 2014 onward is canon. Is it safe to assume anything with the Disney and Lucasfilm logos together are canon? If so Darth Bane being canon is awesome.

Also, I saw the book Darth Plagueis. I know this one isn't canon but just wanted to mention that on the cover art, I'll be damned if Plagueis doesn't look like Snoke... I will edit with a picture.

Holy shit I just saw this movie tonight and it was sooooooo good.

Can't believe Solo is gone but I really appreciate how they actually used the original cast in a meaningful, central way rather than just as 5 minute cameos to please the audience.

Kylo Ren was amazing too, secretly glad he's alive. I've been a fan of Adam Driver for a while and he really was perfect. His face is just so bizarre that even when he removes the helmet, he's no less alien and intimidating.

Just... ah such a fucking good ride.

I sort of think that Han really tried to show fatherly love for his son for the last second of his life, so that Kylo Ren couldn't completely detach himself. He was short of shaken that Han didn't react with hatred towards him.I wonder what the last lesson gonna be from Snoke. He will find himself to the good side somehow he looks dorky and cute for a dark lord, people in the theater snickered when he revealed his face.

Definitely. That hand to the cheek bit was really good and is totally going to stick with him.

And totally confused him even further lol.

Probably just me feeling the reaction they wanted but at the same time I still kind of wish they'd saved him dying for the second movie since it's been so long since we'd seen him and I think we were just starting to get in a groove with him again throughout the movie. On the other hand they did it really quite well and he had a ton of screen time which was great. IMO now though, I would not really be okay with them killing off Luke after that in the next movie. I would have liked at least one scene with the two of them together before he went.

Yeah.

Yeah, he did a good job (and making you want to beat him up) and looked the part. And also he did a good job giving off the proper impression that a lot of the time he was putting up facades and weird desperation.

Everyone would see that movie. All they need to do is adapt the Dollars Trilogy to the Star Wars universe and you've got the movies of the forever.

That would be the best thing ever.

Something else, i hope we see a Thrawn-ish character, it would be so cool to have 'badguy' like that and it would also make the Order look much more believable/capable.

I think some crazy shit went down at Luke's Jedi Academy that put this whole gory story into motion. It's quite possible that Snoke may have been involved in the Academy in some way as well. How else do you explain how someone could get close enough to Ben to influence him.

The Academy falling was Luke's biggest failure, which is why he went into hiding.

Rey's identity is very curious. She is either Luke's daughter or simply a child prodigy strong with the force. Regardless, it was definitely Luke who left her on Jakuu, I think for the protection of the galaxy. I think Rey was leaning darkside even as a child and Luke made the decision to leave her and wipe her memory to protect the world from another darkside force user.

And maybe he also realized that she, if turned good, could save the galaxy. Might be a stretch but Luke's facial expressions at the end imply so much.

They could do that for ep VIII since it should end on a low point for the heroes/resistance/etc. Good way to do this is have someone replace Hux who can outsmart the resistance.
