[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

I didn't think so. I thought it looked a little off, and not in the way it was trying to sell. It was a little disengaging for me, as were the Rathtars. I think the problem isn't just that it's CGI, but that the post-production was very accelerated and compressed.

I guess what I'm saying is that I don't have a major problem with how the effects work in the scenes as they are now, but I also wouldn't mind if they continued post-production work and made improvements for the home video release.
I don't remember anything wrong about it or any other CGI. Maybe it's more clear in the 3D version or something, I saw it in 2D. Or I'm more easily satisfied. It certainly didn't take me out of the movie.

I think some people really wish Ren was more like Darth Maul. A cool design whose only purpose is to create a cool fight scene and sell merchandise.

Instead we got a character that is a thousand times more interesting and doesn't get cut in half at the end of the movie.

I saw it in 2d and Maz and Snoke looked bad. Faces are made to be overly expressive, looked like there were no muscles under the skin, just a moving mouth causing the skin to stretch. I didn't know Serkis was in this but Snoke made some pouty face and I immediately recognized it was Serkis, he always over acts. If his CG characters were realistic he wouldn't have to over act, but he always does.

I don't care at all about CG unless it's terribly bad. Had zero issues with the look of the CG characters in the movie.

Another funny line from the movie:
Chewie growling and getting checked by the nurse, who says "That sounds very scary. You must have been so brave."

Oh yeah, Chewie must get shot cause we have to show Rey can co-pilot the falcon. "Out of the way Chewie!". It was kind of weird when she just flew it.

It's rich and elegant. In a single scene, through both dialogue, character, and aesthetic, you learn everything you need to set up the entire first film. You learn that it's the Emperor, an off screen character, pulling the strings. That he has eroded the last remnants of the senate and attained total control of the galaxy. The other generals are worried, but this is why the Death Star is being built; a super powered battle station that uses brute force and fear to control everyone. You learn that Vader isn't completely in charge, that he is more of a military man and arm of the Emperor than a politician. That the whole concept of the force and Jedis has been so heavily tarnished in the public mindset that it's viewed as a joke ancient religion by most. And in the same breath you learn that its presence is still well and truly there, and the power a force sensitive person can wield. You also get a better picture of the rebel alliance; established as the only real genuine threat to the Imperials, highlighting Vader's failure to attain the stolen plans. The generals are divisive over how important the stolen plans are, and subsequent discussion sets up the choice to destroy Alderaan.

It's one scene and it paints a perfect portrait of literally everything. It's very, very well written.
Rewatched ANH recently and this exchange is so good
Vader: Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force.

Admiral Motti: Don't try to frighten us with your sorcerer's ways, Lord Vader. Your sad devotion to that ancient religion has not helped you conjure up the stolen data tapes, or given you clairvoyance enough to find the rebels' hidden fort-

[Force choke]

Vader: I find your lack of faith disturbing.

I saw the movie a second time and yes. Rey's face DEFINITELY turns into Snoke's in the half a second when Rey is coming after her in the dream sequence in the rain

Yeah it goes in line with the idea that the guy who gets killed tried to club her. Maybe she was under control by Snoke and killed some of those people.

It looked very cartoony. Like they were using old techniques to create CG characters.

That lightsaber was made to sell merchandise.

Can't something just be cool without everyone accusing it of being a decadent reflection of consumerism?

Should everything in the movie just be really straightforward and boring? Should Kylo have just worn a box on his head?

I feel bad for the artists when they read comments like these, which are frequent. Sure the moneybags in charge are in it for the cash, but the artists are trying to make something cool, right? They would have designed something fun whether toys were a factor or not.

That's looking at extremes. I didn't like Maul at all. For TFA, I just wanted a villain that cried a lot less. Hard for me to take him seriously in that mask/outfit when I know he's quakin in his boots the whole time. Love his sword, but he needs to pass that on to someone more deserving.

This wasn't really worth a new thread, but I found it share-worthy. My wife is home with the kids today, and was watching Phantom Menace with them in the wake of their TFA excitement.

It was though. Baton Stormtrooper, Chewie's Bow Gun, Rey's Easy Bake Bread, Phasma, etc... Were all very toyetic.
Has there been proof in the past that Double J can get great performances out of wooden actors?

Looked like Antz

Nobody is saying this, don't derail this thread into something it's not.

Yeah I didn't reply to that drive-by shooting post. Not everything is about gender wars.

the biggest question: Would Hayden Christian's acting have improved had he been directed by JJ Abrams?

Everyone sucked under Lucas. I don't think he would have been good enough in Kylo's role compared to Driver. Driver nailed it.

Lucas is a notoriously bad actor director.

Me and my wife saw it again yesterday afternoon, and I think I enjoyed it more the second time around. I picked up on a lot of little bits of story and dialogue that I missed the first time around.

There are a lot of little bits of detail and backstory and conflicts that are explained in one or two lines of dialogue or an exchange, or even a glance. What I like a lot about this movie is that it shows you more than it tells you (there is still plenty of exposition dialogue, but a lot of the little stuff is left for you to pick up on through context and just inferring things).

I finally heard Obi-Wan's lines after Rey's vision. I was listening for it the first time, but I was so caught up in the images and the mood that I missed it. I also finally made the connection between Ben probing Rey's mind and mentioning the ocean and the island. I didn't think much of it the first time I heard it.

I was on the fence about Rey being a Skywalker, or Luke's daughter, but now, more than before, I'm heavily leaning towards her being one. There is just so much pointing at her being a Skywalker, and sometimes, what it seems like it is, is exactly what it is. Ford's approach to Han reminds me a lot of Alec Guiness' approach to Obi-Wan. The way he sizes Rey up, the look he gives her when she says she didn't know there was that much green in the galaxy; it reminds me so much of the looks Guiness would give Luke in A New Hope. George may not have known that Vader was Luke's father at the time of A New Hope, but Guiness played it so well that rewatching it, you distinctly get the impression that he was ahead of Lucas, and added that extra bit of "knowing" in Obi-Wan's interactions with Luke.

I'm also leaning more towards Finn being force sensitive. Being Force sensitive doesn't mean you are going to become a Jedi. The Force awakening doesn't have to exclusively apply to our pretty little white savior Rey. I think, going forward, we are going to see a lot more force sensitive characters in episodes 8 and 9. Major characters, and supporting characters. I feel this way about Finn, because of Maz's constant urging of Finn to use the lightsaber. When he says he needs a weapon, and Maz says, "You have one," and the looks she gives him imply that she knows more about him than him just being an awol Stormtrooper. She seemed to know that he would be able to use the lightsaber in some capacity. He very well could be just a guy, but I don't think so. He may not be as in tune with the Force as Rey, but Maz reminded us, the audience, that the Force is in all living things, whether you are aware of it or not. I think Finn will manifest more force potential in the next movies.

I've listend to the soundtrack a few times in isolation, and then listening to it again while watching the movie; it's a beautiful score. It's grown on me significantly. Lots of little pieces, big and small, really stood out to me this time around. The Millennium Falcon escape from Jakku is still the most exhilarating set piece in the movie, and Rey force pulling the lightsaber at the end still gives me goosebumps.

My wife wants to see it for a third time. lol. So do I.

Hey don't talk shit about Easy Bake Bread, that was cool. The rest I can agree with, although Chewie's bow gun is a classic.

The easy bake bread scene bothered me because the stuff is clearly precious, yet she spilled a bunch of powder out the side of the bowl while pouring it in.

After the second viewing the soundtrack has really grown on me (as any good score does). No, it isn't as bombastic as some of Williams's work on the older films, but it is more nuanced and emotional without beating your brains out with it.

Yes. Team Finn-Force. I agree wholeheartedly.

I hope the training scenes don't dominate the movie. Hell I hope there aren't any training scenes at all, and we get a time skip. I don't want another rehash of the OT.

I think this is likely.

Maz was very clearly supposed to be the new Yoda figure and, while I actually rather liked her and want to know more about her, it just feels like a disappointment for some reason. Sorry Lupita, love you.

In the Art Of book, they actually refer to her character in early form as Yoda. Not literally meant to be Yoda himself, but that's how they labelled it haha. They knew what they were doing.

Yeah its been an on running joke that Chewie is a big baby in the films. Liked that reference.

What are chances of extended version on blu Ray or will that be saved to make more money 10 years from now

Chances are expected to be zero.

You just have to hope they include deleted stuff in a finished state on the bluray so that someone can make a fanedit out of it.

I don't think they'll ever do a proper extended cut. Because it could potentially mess with the canon. We'll definitely see all the deleted scenes though.
