So I have heard that Luke Skywalker doesn't play a significant role in the Force Awakens. Is it true? I am looking forward to seeing him the most.

Temper your expectations of him in this movie, but I will say that what he is in (and everything leading up to it) is energizing and just great. Overall.

Obviously it's not canon since it's not in the final film or novel, but one version of the leaked shot list from back when the movie's macguffin was Luke's lightsaber and not a map to the first Jedi Temple made it explicitly obvious that Luke trained Kylo.

So the concept was always there, it just wasn't shown in the final movie. I would assume this is why they had at one point hired a guy to play young Luke, who appears not to be in the final movie unless he's the guy in the hood touching R2.

So they have considered at some point to include flashbacks in the movie. That's interesting regarding EP8!

I'm just going to reiterate this since it seems like some people missed it the first time around:

That vision really is a disaster lol. What an incoherent mess.

1- is it specifically confirmed that Ben killed any jedis before joining the first order? When Pablo Hidalgo was asked about that scene in the vision he said it shouldn't really be referred as an academy, almost confirming the people being killed are jedis, it's just not an academy. Also said it didn't happen many years ago, so either jedis were killed more than once or this was the first time.

I think it doesn't directly say. The story of Kylo and Luke is something like "and then Kylo betrayed Luke and destroyed it all". Which could be physically destroyed people and things or good be destroyed Luke's optimism / spirit / willingness to train a new Jedi Order.

One last thing. Anything I should know about the movie before I go see it? Anything I should keep my eyes out for? Any cameos, surprises or facepalms I should brace myself for? I just want to make sure I won't hate the movie so tell me about all the BS beforehand so that I can fume about it now and then just enjoy the movie tomorrow.

So I remember people saying that the art book says Disney forced JJ to have only X-wings and TIEs in this movie cause ROTJ had too many different ships and it would confuse people.

Well if that was from the art book that is not true at all. I just read the picture that is from and it says the total opposite. They say ROTJ you CAN tell who the heroes and villans are due to their distort design and everyone could tell who the good and bad are.

So I don't know where that came from but it isn't from the art book.

Since this is the spoiler thread, I don't see the point of beating around the bush. Luke disappeared years before because his apprentice turned on him and slaughtered his new generation of Jedi. Luke went off in search of the first Jedi Temple. The focus of the movie is everyone trying to find him, and at the end Rey finds him standing in the ruins of the Temple.

This is a terrible way to experience it.

Go in blind with no preconceived notions.

Just go watch it and have a good time. It's a fun fun movie :)

Wouldn't that kind of depend on what annoys you? The movie is essentially a reimagining of the 3 OT movies smushed together into one plot, and for some people that's nostalgic and feels like a return home while for other people it's annoying and lacking originality.

There's one obvious thing I wish I'd known: the text crawl introduces an "old ally" of Leia's who's in the first scene. It seems like he's supposed to be a cameo but he isn't. Entirely new character. It took me out because for several minutes after his appearance I was scratching my head over who he was supposed to be.

Well I don't want a repeat of Thor 2. The first movie I really enjoyed but the second completely killed my enthusiasm to see any further Marvel movies :/

My status as a Star Wars fan is at a breaking point so this will absolutely positively do me in, be it good or bad. I think I would rather stay a Star Wars fan though so I want to maximise my enjoyment of the movie by not thinking about the little things.

Like, are there any glaring mistakes I should be aware of beforehand?

So no major anachronisms, nonsense or overdone movie logic I should be aware of? Is the movie that flawless? Wow, that could be pretty amazing.

How can anyone deny that Snoke is Darth Plaguies?

Pretty easily!

So far as the music goes, that comparison only works if you believe the music in the Opera scene was written to score Palpatine's conversation. But it was written just to be the Opera music. It's diagetic. It's not meant to score anything but the imagery of squids swimming through a floating ball. Everyone at Lucasfilm calls it "Squid Lake." Calling Squid Lake "Plagueis' Theme" would be like calling Cantina Band "Han Solo's Theme," Yunno?

Basically, the fact Williams wrote something that sounds similar to something else Williams previously wrote isn't much of a sign by itself of anything other than Williams covers the same musical ground sometimes.

Everything else about the Plagueis theory basically got hashed out yesterday, starting here.

This movie does wonders to reignite the love many people have had for Star Wars over the years. It's a love letter to Original Trilogy fans. You'll probably love it. Let us know!

If I will like it I will post again here, if I don't then I don't think I will be even able to muster the necessary energy to bash it. This is quite possibly my last chance to stay a Star Wars fan.

It's a great movie, not perfect, but better than the Prequels. My third favorite SW film. Just go into it expecting Star Wars and plenty of OT feels.

how did it never cross their mind to make the Force Stromtrooper who fights Finn Captain Phasma? Give her SOMETHING, set up of a rivalry between the two to pay off at the end and play into future episodes. Something, shit.

You can always rewatch the original trilogy. That's what my plan was if I happened to hate TFA and if I wanted to get rid of the sour taste it could've potentially left in my mouth.

Thankfully, that wasn't necessary. I'm still going to watch the OT at some point in the near-future though, lol.

This has been one of the biggest mysteries since last Wednesday. Probably second biggest mystery in the whole damn film. Of course it's completely unintentional.

People keep asking for that Special Edition, I say do it, restore all the connective tissue that gives the last 40 minutes some weight, and then just CG and ADR some Phasma in there.

Or fuck it, just reshoot the sequence on the set of 8.

Mcz117chief, just go watch the movie without setting yourself up with any positive or negative expectations.

Like, are there any glaring mistakes I should be aware of beforehand?

I can't think of any mistakes, per se, but there are a lot of times were explanations are completely glossed over. I'll put these in spoiler bars just in case you really don't want to know what those particular moments are, but JJ and Kasdan were very clearly concerned with moving the plot along at a fast pace without being bogged down in exposition, and they let some things fall to the wayside for the audience to figure out themselves or for the books to solve:

-"An old ally" played by Max von Sydow has the map to the first Jedi Temple at the beginning of the movie. Who he is, how he has the map, how he knows the main characters, is not explained. According to the books, he's Lor San Tekka, an old explorer and friend of Luke who helped him recover Jedi artifacts and lore after RotJ and he's a member of the Church of the Force, which is made up of non-Force sensitive people who were persecuted during the time of the Empire for believing the Jedi would return. None of this is explained in the movie.
-Finn thinks Poe Dameron dies on Jakku. Poe shows up later in the movie somehow having gotten off-planet without any explanation.
-R2-D2 has the entire galactic map except for the missing part, but he's been in lower power mode since Luke disappeared. At the end of the movie he suddenly wakes up and they combine the map pieces. What caused R2 to wake up? According to JJ, he overhears 3PO talking about the map and slowly begins to boot up, and that's about it. Not explained in the movie and feels really awkward.
-There's a Force vision sequence dealing with Kylo Ren and Rey's pasts and everyone is confused about it, but that's on purpose, because it's a mystery left for the next two movies.
-Maz Kanata has Anakin/Luke's lightsaber that was lost on Bespin. Han asks her how she got it and she tells him "that's a tale for another time".
-The relationship between the Resistance and the New Republic isn't that fleshed out, or how much the First Order relates to the Empire, or how powerful it is, but the FO is basically a neo-Imperial military junta in the Unknown Regions and the Resistance is a secret force set up by ex-Rebel hardliners who disagreed with the Republic's stance of non-provocation. The Republic doesn't want a war with the FO, but they fund the Resistance to have a proxy war with them. There's also a glaring moment where something relating to the Republic is destroyed that should have galaxy-wide repercussions and it's totally glossed over, but maybe the next movie will pick it up.
-Who is Snoke? Lol who knows.

An extended edition will likely have a lot of unfinished fx shots and would be very costly to make. Doubt we will get one but I'd love to see it.

He's in the spoiler thread. Don't black bar this shit for him.

My recommendation is that he just not see the damn thing, honestly. He's being weird about it.

I enjoy how many people want a Special Edition but will NOT use those words.

But you're absolutely right that it's very likely never comin'. And not just because finishing FX for cut scenes is going to cost money, but because Abrams doesn't do them. The Force Awakens reportedly looks and feels exactly the way he wants it to.

I agree, I think it was just Han pitying her. Possibly even she reminded him of a much younger Luke, who only ever knew Tattooine.

I think Chewie looking at her at the end was more of a nod of approval, her being the new pilot of the Falcon. Which I love...haha.

He was probably just estimating his odds. He was riding pretty high after getting that nurse's number back at HQ.

I hope they keep the spirit of Lucas and keep modifying these movies forever, up to and including a wacky CGI musical dance number at Maz's castle
not really
.

But yes, there's so much that was cut and the movie would be better if it was all put back in. I get why JJ cut so much but nobody really minds a movie being slightly slower or somewhat longer when the excised material isn't boring. And from what we can tell, it seems like a lot of the stuff cut was worthwhile.

Kind of hard when we are talking about such an established franchise like Star Wars.

Where are your expectations right now? It seems like you want to hear the bad things just so you don't go in there thinking it's the best movie ever and will end up disappointed. Then again, you want people to spoil everything for you which will will any surprises the movie has.

Instead of reading every possible "bad" thing in the movie and then being on the lookout for those things while you watch it, why not just watch it without that on your mind?

Well except for the R2D2 stuff it all seems to be in line with classic movie logic, I think I can live with all those. I just don't know who Maz Kanata or Poe Dameron are.

Church of the Force gives me 1st century Christianity vibes, pretty cool.

I am very shaken about going to see the movie, I have been a Star Wars fan for the past 20 years but about 3 years ago I started almost hating Star Wars but I want to like it again. I just want to see the movie's good sides and completely ignore the bad sides so I can love Star Wars again. That is all I want.

Well, it sounds like a lot of his fandom experience seems to center around that weird "basher/gusher" dichotomy that doesn't really serve to improve anything but the ability for people to fight about Star Wars online.

At which point "just watching the movie" becomes impossible because the whole point of watching the movie is to find things about it you can then go back to the internet and yell at people for as you either "bash" or "gush" as loudly as possible.

"If this movie doesn't work I'll just give up on Star Wars forever."

Just give up already then. It'll probably be way better for you in the long run not having to waste your time on it. You'll find something else. There's roughly 3 million other things out there that are worthy of your time and attention in pop-culture land. They may not be as BIG, but that doesn't mean they won't be as enjoyable. Maybe even moreso.

Can't wait for an added scream for when
Han Solo falls down after being stabbed by his son

I feel like this is such a BS reason for this "resistance" to exist. You would think somebody in the New Republic would be like "hey guys, this First Order is literally the Empire 2.0, they even have TIE fighters and stormtroopers and shit." It's such a cop-out to recreate an OT style conflict unless we actually get a better look as to why the New Republic is full of colossal morons.

That was Leia, and she was labeled an alarmist by the government, so she took her stuff and left and is getting secretly funded by sympathetic elements of the NR.

It's no coincidence that at the time of TFA the chancellor is Chancellor (Ne)Villecham(berlain). The NR is desperate not to go to war.
