I can accept fans not acknowledging the prequels as being canon just like I accept that anything beyond Terminator 2 never existed. We should give each other that!

Such a shame how Hux, Phasma, and the first order were turned into marvel tier jobbers for the sake of "Teh good guys gotta win!"

Gleeson and Christie were wasted big time IMO.

i still dont understand how she had all of this press around her and she's in the movie for 90 seconds.
How many non-Force Sensitive adversaries actually manage to remain a direct threat in the Star Wars movies for multiple films?

Boba looked cool in ESB then flew around for a bit before getting Han Solo'ed into the Sarlacc, almost all the comnanders we ever know the names of get blown up or choked to death by Vader.

Zam Wesell got offed in the opening act of AoTC. Jango managed to fight Obi-wan and kill a rando Jedi but got Samuel L. Jackson'ed in the same movie.

Hux and Phasma appear to have gotten a chance to live through this movie to fight again in the next one. They got off easy.

Ironically, Nute Gunray and his Trade Federation posse are some of the longest lived non-Force Sensitive antagonists in the franchise (assuming you don't technically count Tarkin) and they never fight directly.

In the trailer Maz hands her Anakin's lightsaber, but this was removed from the film.

Well, I don't know if that counts since Maz is so short lol.

I can't figure how this scene was supposed to fit in the movie. Unless they made a big change to the script, when would Maz give her the saber? And then take it back again and give it to Finn/Han? Leia shows up after the attack on Maz's castle. I don't get it but it sounds like they made a big change fairly late.

Edit: Rise of the Jedis

But you see, he was trained by an older, wiser Jar Jar who gave his life for a noble cause.

He can become the living embodiment of the Light Side, and then transform all the others characters into Gungans to help them become closer to the Force. Then he can send out a Force wave across the galaxy that destroys every Imperial and Sith!

(I know you're joking, but just in case: once your audience has made up their mind about a character, it's done. You're never going to "trick" them into liking a character they've decided to hate, no matter how hard you bend the plot to make it happen. You're just going to make them resent the character and the plot.)

I think I read somewhere that they cut a lot of Maz's scenes out.

It probably fit in after the battle at her bar, after Kylo had left with Rey. Leia had just shown up, and that was the one location she and Maz were in the same place.

I think the film needed some downtime there, too, but Abrams apparently had to get it down to ~2:15.

But she gave the saber to Han already by then no? Maz gives him the saber when the attack starts. So they reshot scenes then after cutting this.

Yeah I'm just kidding around. Although I remember seeing somewhere a picture of a room where they were doing makeup for the set and there was the bust of a Gungan on the table. I thought they were going to bring the Gungans back at some point.

Has everyone reached a consensus on whether or not Finn is a force user? I must admit that I was very disappointed that he wasn't. The misdirection was cool...but also disappointing for me.

I think its possible. I have a feeling he isnt though. Just the way he was brought up to be a ruthless killer and is just so good by nature and how he stumbles upon Rey and how Kylo reacts to him.. I felt like that was all because of the light side being part of him but thats just wishful thinking I think.

Maybe if Carrie Fisher wasn't playing her.

I could see her getting got in Episode VIII, really. Good way to up the stakes for the final chapter. Luke and Ben would literally be THE LAST SKYWALKERS, depending on whether Rey is a blood relation.

Ok just throwing this out here BUT Luke is the master/teacher to the main character and has all the answers and secrets. He must die in the next one. Every other story ever kills off the teacher so the main character doesn't have someone else to lean on

Nah. Yoda didnt' die until Jedi. Luke's gonna die, but I doubt it happens in 8.

What planets did the First Order destroy? Were they key Republic worlds or just example worlds? I dont feel they spent enough time on that given how big a deal it is if they just blew up the Republic home world or something. Were they all in the same system the Resistance was in (Thus why Han could see them blowing up from the ground) or was that just another Abrams artistic liberty of blowing up a world and adjusting the location of other worlds to make it visible?

The Hosnian system, of which Hosnian Prime was the capital of the New Republic. However, the New Republic rotates its capitals based on elections. That said, most of the NR fleet was based there because it was peacetime.

The fact that they saw it in the sky was just some dumb thing Abrams did and Pablo Hidalgo explained it away as a tear in hyperspace making it visible.

I'd love a First Order TV Animated move fleshing out some of the characters and their backgrounds, put it on disney XD ,abc family or something like that.

I assumed most senators and delegates were there too.

Consensus will never happen until a movie either says it directly or shows something undeniable.

Was anyone else annoyed by the fact that Lukes lightsaber just happened to be in Mazs basement? Or is this another case of something that's only explained by EU material? Do the comics show that Han knew all along and intentionally went there to retrieve it?

It was Anakins lightsaber that Obi-Wan stole. A lightsaber used to kill younglins. Maz probably was one of those younglins grand other and stole the saber so she could kill Vader. But he's fucking dead.

Something I realllly wish they hadn't glossed over with "a good question, for another time."

There's no explanation in the comics or books yet for why Maz has the lightsaber. According to the original shot list, before stuff got changed around, part of the Force vision would have involved a long sequence of various people having the lightsaber after it was somehow recovered from Bespin. Here's the second version of the shot list that got leaked:

EXT DAY - 192 - SAVANNAH • Reprise Hand takes sword, we reveal Naka

EXT NIGHT - 193 - SAVANNAH - PEASANT'S HOVEL • Peasant is using the sword as a firestarter

EXT DAY - 194 - SAVANNAH - PEASANT'S HOVEL • Local trader buys sword off of Naka

EXT NIGHT - 195 - SAVANNAH • Local trader already has sold the sword on

EXT NIGHT - 196 - BATTLEFIELD • A battle rages. The sword is being used.

EXT DAY - 198 - ACADEMY • Leia and Han Solo hand over Young Kylo Ren to his Uncle for training

EXT DAWN - 200 - ACADEMY • Young Kylo Ren being trained by his Uncle

INT NIGHT - 202 - ACADEMY • Bodies left behind - Young Kylo Ren is gone

EXT DAY - 203 - JAGGED TERRAIN/PALACE • Kylo Ren joins The Knights Of Ren

EXT DUSK - 204 - ACADEMY • R2-D2 upset as his master leaves

EXT NIGHT - 205 - JAGGED TERRAIN/PALACE • Kylo Ren joins The Knights Of Ren

EXT DAY - 207 - CASTLE • Reveal Maz Kanata's spectacular Castle

INT DAY - 208 - CASTLE • Maz Kanata walks the group through the Castle interiour

EXT NIGHT - 209 - CASTLE • Kylo Ren and his Knights at campfire. Maz Kanata steals sword

INT DAY - 210 - CASTLE STAIRCASE • Walking down stairs, Maz Kanata reveals she stole it.

EXT NIGHT - 211 - MOUNTAIN SIDE • Reveal Maz Kanata on Speeder, she has the sword

Here's the other version of the sequence:

◾Interior Day Roses’s Pub – There is a secret underground chamber and Rose begins her tale to Han, Rey, and Finn. They hold hands.
◾Flashback: Interior Night at Academy – Dead bodies are on the ground. Luke turns up.
◾Flashback: Exterior Dusk at the Academy – It is noted it is peaceful now. Artoo-Detoo is saddened as his master departs.
◾Flashback: Exterior Day at the Savannah – A hand that takes the sword at the start of the film is revealed to be Naka’s hand.
◾Flashback: Exterior on the Savannah – A peasant’s hovel where the peasant drops the sword, starts a fire, panics and then returns.
◾Flashback: Exterior Desert – Local trader is seen leaving. (I believe it then cuts to Finn and Rey’s faces as the story unfolds).
◾Flashback: Exterior Day Desert – Local trader makes a sale to a wealthy man.
◾Flashback: Exterior Night Battlefield – Fierce battle! Sword is being use by the CLAN against THE SEVEN.
◾Flashback: Exterior Night: the last man is down and Kylo Renn approaches Rey!
◾Flashback: THE SEVEN are looting and we see Rose in the foreground taking “the object.”
◾Interior Day Roses’s Pub: In the underground chamber, Rose presents the saber and Rey is revolted by it while Finn is attracted to it.
◾Interior Day Roses’s Pub: Rey moves past aliens in an uproar as she leaves the establishment.

Anyone know the EU explanation for hyperspace travel? Wookiepedia skim says its like a alternate parallel dimension so you pop into it then pop out of it and surprise you're somewhere else in real space. Are those crossover points continuous or limited? Like if you wanted to traverse the galaxy could you go in a straight line entirely in hyperspace? Or do you pop in and out of hyperspace a la Mass Effect with the Relays?

Basically: why the heck is there a route plotted on the dumb space map. Do you even need space routes? (Related: why does the Kessel Run even exist lol why ever navigate in realspace.)

Also this movie introduces a new dumb term: Starkiller is a "hyperlight" weapon.

What no that makes even less sense than anything. Luke had the saber and lost it when Vader chopped his arm off. Maz recovered it from Bespin, or got it from someone else who did.

Moments like that and the stumbling on the Millennium Falcon when they need a ship to escape remind me a lot of the ridiculous chance encounter with Kirk and Old Spock in the first Abrams Star Trek. That really ripped me out of Star Trek but with Star Wars, my suspension of disbelief goes a bit further. Force balancing and all that.

Episode IX will be titled "Last of the Skywalkers", to retain the same singular/plural ambiguity that "Return of the Jedi" and "Revenge of the Sith" had.

They left it open ended with hints either way. I'm still hoping he is.

I'd be okay with him being a badass normal, as long as it's just an excuse to put him in way more action scenes and generally step up to be The Realest Dude. (I think/hope Abrams is going to be leery of overdoing it with Jedi vs. Sith battles due to the prequels.)

You have to plot a course around large obstructions and gravity wells. So you can't just fly through a planet, star or nebula. In the EU there are ships that can generate artificial gravity wells that can pull ships out of Hyperspace and prevent ships from jumping into hyperspace as well.

Coincidence isn't as bad with the Star Wars series, you could easily just say that "The Force led us/them to each other" and you can get out of any situation. It's lazy, for sure, but definitely part of the series and I've just kinda accepted it when it comes to my suspension of disbelief. So much of all the films rely on some element of chance or coincidence.

Ahem...

Part of me was like, oh mayne, they need to introduce her back into Episode 8... then I realize how old she would be, hype deflated.

I have a feeling this collection of only-figurines and not too deformative-figurines will end up being huge by the time Epi VIII is released.

Please don't fuck this up Johnson or it'll all go to the trash bin.

I'm pretty convinced that Rey will turn to Dark Side in VIII and Kylo Light Side. There are too many factors could trigger Rey's transition, such as learning that Luke is the father who left him on that planet or possible death of Finn (remember, attachment is banned in Jedi philosophy). She had been full of fear and anger just like Anakin when he was a little child.

On the other hand, Kylo always had -and still has a family and friends, there are still strong ties in him to Light Side. He's just being manipulated by Snoke and a possible death of Snoke (I expect this to be done by Rey) could severe all his ties to Dark side.

Best possible scenario for me:

- No first order, no Republic, whole Galaxy is in chaos
- Snoke, Rey and other Knights of Ren are on the loose
- Luke is unsure about Rey's training yet she is a powerful jedi even without a proper training
- Both are searching the whole galaxy for Ren and Snoke to end the chaos
- Luke thinks Ren can be saved. They meet, Luke defeats Ren and captures him. There is another Knight (just like Dooku in Ep 2) and Rey fights with him and gets defeated.
- Remnants of Republic fight a team of powerful gangsters and scroundels who are under Snoke's manipulation (they may deploy battle droids just like Trade Federation) and defeats them
- Ren unites with his mother and cries for his father. He helps them to find Snoke.
- Rey, Luke, Finn and Ren fight Knights of Ren and defeat them (they surrender) Snoke captures Finn, reveals the truth about Luke being Rey's father and kills Finn. Bursting with anger she kills Snoke. An apologetic Luke tries to calm down Rey but it's a lost cause, her transition to dark side complete.
- Rey escapes with surrendered Knights of Ren.
- Finn's Funeral. Ben and Leia together. Luke is devastated. The End.

I haven't thought much about IX but it'll be probably about Luke and Kylo trying to find a way to stop a furious Rey who is trying to reinstate a republic on her own with a little help from Knights of Ren. The beautiful part of the IX will be the difficulty to tell who is actually dark and who is light side.
