Are people still using the "in time you will see that this movie actually sucks argument"?

I have asked this before, what date am I supposed to mark on my calendar? 5 years? 10?
I'm also curious on what kinda of movies this applies to. Opinions on anything can change over time, so it's basically pointing out an inherent and obvious fact of taste making that just comes off as someone wanting you to dislike it for no reason.

I like how people are calling Kylo Ren a wuss, when the biggest implied wuss is Luke who abandoned everything to go into hiding instead of dealing with the problems he helped create.

luke is such a wasteman in this movie. god help his rep if he ends up being rey's father too.

leaves her in the guardianship of an alien who makes her scavenge for her food. that's why i'm hoping he is not the father.

Another reminder that Hollywood is full of munchkins, looked up Adam Drivers height since upon my second viewing I noticed how much he towered over most of the people on set. He's my height :/

Look, when the sheeple get sick of wearing their rose-colored nostalgia glasses, they'll take them off and realize that I - the smarterst guy on the planet - was right all the while. Then they'll weep, gnash their teeth and cover themselves in shame clothes. And I? I shall laugh from atop my mighty throne of righteousness. For I will have disliked something before others! I am superior!

Absolutely. And therfore I could tell them that in time they will see how great it is. It's just a pointless thing to say.

Been my pet peeve when it comes to this movie. Along with Star Wars fans just like anything Star Wars argument despite evidence to the contrary.

KOTOR II is an incomplete, self-serious, fanwanky-to-the-extreme, pseudo-intellectual mess. I'll never get why a tryhard deconstruction of a fairy tale is seen as the holy grail of Star Wars storytelling by so many.

Honestly, it probably has to do with it being an Obsidian game more than anything else.

Bonus points for people that fit into the middle section of a ven diagram that reads "loves Obsidian" and "hates BioWare"

Hey, has this been linked in here?

It should be linked in here.

Panel discussion with Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter, with writers/producers/executives behind The Force Awakens.

This is essentially one of THE best podcasts about the making of the film ever made available.

Nice! I'll watch this in the morining. Thanks!

I'm just glad they're making these things back to back. Because, not that they would otherwise, it more than certainly precludes them from taking silly Internet "feedback" on board.

The film isn't infalible, so of course not all the gripes are invalid, but whoo boy is it hard to seperate the wheat from the chaff.

You have "plot holes" that are basically never specifically cited, "lol you like it cause nostalgia" and - my personal favorite - people actually, seriously invoking the term "fanfiction" to describe this movie. Like, have you seen some of the theories and "what they should've done..." in this thread alone? Barring the fact Riot Control Stormtrooper should've been Phasma, I don't exactly think people are presenting superior alternatives here. LOL

Finally saw it. Was pretty good. Excited to see where this goes. Probably need another viewing along with seeing IV-VI again to be able to speak more about everything.

Wait is that an argument you've actually heard? In a universe where the PT actually exists?

I don't think this movie has enough plot. Nothing is explained. I mean, certain things, like the force, shouldn't be explained, and should be kept mysterious, but nothing is explained in this movie. I enjoyed it in the moment, but when I think back on it, there's no cohesion to it. It all just sort of falls apart. And they really shouldn't have put another Death Star in this movie. That was just a bad idea. The more I think about it, the more I think Daisy Ridley is the only thing about this movie I liked.

It was okay. Everything felt like a callback. It was pretty evident that that would be the case from the trailers, but I wanted to see something new.

Did anyone gif the nope storm troopers after Kylos outburst after Rey's escape? It will be my new go to gif for those situations.

Also I wish we didn't get to see Kylos face, as I am now an unwilling KyRey shipper.

Gross....

Definitely agree with this.

Then again I wasn't shocked by it. Have to remember it is essentially a sequel to a 30+ year old movie. So the callbacks, while kind of forced in some areas, made sense I think.

I hope there's more to it. After Luke failed Ren, maybe he went searching for the first temple in hopes that he would find something to help bring balance back to the force. But upon arriving, he learned a scary truth. Seems out of character for Luke to be running away, but then again we don't know exactly how much his character has changed over the years.

He's defragging, lol

The book actually uses this exact word. R2D2 keeps backups of every computer he accesses. Must have one hell of a hard drive.

I was ok with most of this, because they're trying to anchor the story to Jedi instead of having something that feels entirely separate, but I did think some of the Han/Chewy stuff was a little much. Han and the Bowcaster, for example; all these years together and Han never used it until now, and now he feels the need to borrow it twice? The second time it felt especially shitty and a little too much like pandering fan service for my liking.

But I mostly loved the movie, so whatever. My only other complaint was I thought Rey was a little too perfect, in the sense that Finn relies on her plenty but she never really does the same. I'm not trying to argue the Mary Sue thing here, I think it was just unbalanced writing. She's clearly the new Luke of the series, so once ep.9 is complete and we see her in full badassery mode it may be easier to accept (or if we get some more backstory on her in ep.8).

Starkiller Base is one of the most physics breaking things in sci-fi from recent memory. I mean, nothing about it makes sense. Its beam being visible from across the galaxy, while clearly done for dramatic effect, is ludicrous. Let's just assume it was a function of it shooting through Hyper-space or something.

Also a star the size of the sun is millions of times more massive than an earth-sized planet. Syphoning a star into a tiny planet makes no sense. Are we to assume they do a direct mass to energy conversion, then when the oscillator is broken the energy converts back into mass and ignites as an absurdly small star in the place of the planet?

I know it's all fantasy and done for the sake of the narrative but Starkiller base kind of bothered me from my first viewing and its just as ridiculous on a second viewing.

Finally saw it. I haven't read any of the posts in this gigantic topic, so forgive me if I'm just repeating other reviews.

I felt the first 2/3 or so was fantastic and fairly enjoyable. It had callbacks but it felt like the story was a true continuation of the overall Star Wars story and was going to take things in a new direction. But the final 1/3 of the movie right around when the death star v3.0 appeared is when I felt the movie lost cohesion and the story became too much of a retread of the original trilogy.

Bringing back another Super Turbo Hyper Edition Death Star was just a bad idea. And even worse it had a single fail point, the same as the previous death stars. The create a mega weapon the size of a planet but they don't bother to have multiple fail-safe redundancies? Essentially in a 30-40 year period they've constructed 3 death stars (which seems improbable on its own) and they haven't learned their lessons. At least come up with a new way to destroy the death star like take it into a black hole or something.

Also Ren seemed like a powerful antagonist initially but having him struggle with two untrained fighters completely castrated the character. Even if Ren wasn't a master yet, he should have been able to dispatch them easily in a straightup lightsaber battle.

I felt the movie was also missing a truly cool lightsaber battle, that's definitely where the prequels excelled. Maybe the lightsaber battles will improve with the sequels.

BB8 was starting to border on a cutesy Disney Wall-E type robot, but thankfully they added a little bit of edge and slapstick to him in a few scenes to make him more like a Star Wars droid and not a Disney robot.

I'm still onboard with the sequels. Star Wars has been one of the few movies where the series tends to get better as the trilogy progresses. Most of my complaints with Awakens was from the last 1/3 of the movie when they decided to play it too safe and familiar with the story line. Hopefully they'll be a little more bold in the sequels.

Just on my way back from my second view.

It was even better than the first time. Concentrated on different things than the last time and it is definitively a movie that needs to be watched twice.

Love it even more now ^_^

I saw the movie two nights ago. I'm pretty disappointed with it. Not enough of it is original, a lot of the events are just too convenient, and the Kylo Ren's character is a walking joke. It's better than Episode One but that's not really a difficult achievement.

Saw it last night with my roommate. Pretty shitty movie lol. Like I was honest to god surprised because literally everyone is saying it's at the very least good. Kylo Ren is about as intimidating as an edgy teenager, with the added benefit of having a stupid name. Rey is boring as buggery. I liked Finn a lot though. There felt like there was a lack of build up up to any major events in the story. The light saber fight was also lackluster, quite possibly the worst in the whole series. And the end was some cheese ball over extended tripe.

Luke is an implied wuss. We'll find out in episode 8 if he deserves the title of wuss or not.

Kylo is a known wuss.

I was caught up in the movie enough the first time to not care, but yeah on the second viewing I was thinking some of the same things. It's easily the worst part of the movie.

Not sure if this has been discussed, but how were the new order going to power their planet killer weapon now that they've used up the two(?) local stars? There won't be another star within lightyears

I think more effort goes into figuring out the sci-fi logic of Transformers cartoons than Star Wars. Best to fuggedaboutit.

What are the odds on wussy Luke becoming a force ghost soon?

Come to think of it, the NT is rather morbid to our OT heroes. Kylo, whether he gets redeemed or not, will get send to meet his father by Mary Sue. Meaning no more Solo bloodlines.

Leia will probably get killed by Snoke or Kylo to complete her son's training in the next Ep.

So with wussy Luke becoming a force ghost, means our 3 OT heroes left behind none of their legacy.

I still think Mary Sue is some random girl whom the force chose.

They wouldn't. They eliminated the seat of the Republic and, had the second shot succeeded, they would have eliminated the only military force oppossing them.

Starkiller Base, unlike the Deathstar, had a singular purpose beyond intimidation. It existed to win the 'war' and only NEEDED to be fired twice.

I hesitate to go back again to see it (i saw it one time last sunday with two friends and it was amazing)

My nephew (10 years old) never saw any star wars movie but want to see it. I want to see those eyes like "omg wow" but i hesitate.

Those of you who saw the movie 2 (or 3..OR MORE?) times, do you think it's better to seing it the second time?

I've seen it three times. I like it more than when I first saw it.

Why would you hesitate? Sounds like you liked it and it's perfect for a kid that age.

Probably been talked about tons of times already, but why did Kylo Ren even have a mask? His face was fine, lol.

Was it just to look cool? Lol.

I have that "bad feeling" that it's "crazy" to see a movie twice at cinema and not waiting blu ray..

But cinema is something that we will never have with star wars (in 3D and with Atmos sound! ^^)

J.J.A said in an interview that Kylo is full aware of the fact that at the end, Anakin went back to the light side. Kylo know that.

And THAT is interesting. Because Anakin in ghost form can't bring kylo back to the right side if they chat together.

Kinda yeah. He is at his best when he is in control, holds fear over others, and doesn't let his emotions get in the way. Hiding behind a scary mask makes him intimidating to others and means he doesn't have to engage emotionally. He takes it off when he kill Han so he tests himself to see if he can still do it while looking his father in the eye and offering up his lightsaber.

My fiancée and I just came home from our second viewing. GO!

I couldn't make my 6 year old uninterested. He even woke me up 2 days in a row with Star Wars t shirts asking me if we can go. He has only seen Lego Star Wars stuff and selected scenes from the movie so I was hesitant.

So I chose a 2d screen with less loud sound, with a Peanuts showing as a contingency. Just so we could escape if he got scared. Plus it's Star Wars - ultimate dad fantasy, so I went along.

It worked out. His face was "omg wow" the entire time. Only got scared at the lightsaber part and was more familiar with Kylo Ren than I knew. I'm a bit concerned that he wasn't phased out by Ren killing his dad though.

Just saw it my second time, so so good, i want to see it again, for a third time , thats a first time ever for a film in the cinema that i felt like that.

A sunday at 11:30am, there were about 30-40 people in my cinema, which suprised me, becuase normally around that time people are busy having sunday lunch or whatever, but nope they went for star wars instead, bear in mind my local cinema is usually empty most days apart from maybe opening night
