Awesome Games Done Quick 2016: January 3rd - 10th.

I love this, watching streams since very beginning. Promised myself that I will donate something every single day and im planning to keep my word ;)

Werster was hilarious during some of the Sonic runs, back whenever. Why is he banned?

Also that was gamepro011. He was a whole new level of cringe.

Ah, damn. That was such a ridiculous Sonic Adventure run. Embarrassing. :(

I'm sad that Big Jon's runs all got rejected, but somehow there's a Stepmania run that got accepted. Pretty hyped for the blindfolded Punch Out race.

Oops, you're right, it wasn't him.

EDIT: corporate backroom politics and shady shit ?

Lots of shady jazz. For example, romscout - the guy who organized these events so well Twitch hired him - was fired. Big drama there.

Then there's the fact PCF takes most of the money and doesn't actually use it for what they speak about, much like Susan G. Komen. It's one of those bloated charities. MSF was a better model, but that was thanks to romscout.

There's a lot that's soured me for these events. People supporting them today are very likely doing it for the wrong reasons.

Essentially, Games Done Quick isn't a community event. It's an event run by very specific people who have a very specific agenda in mind for what "they" want the event to be, and community members just happened to be required to achieve their goals.

Anyone who doesn't step 100% in line with the "company" policy is out, no matter how much the "community" might want them there.

Is there any proofs to back that up? Because that's freaking disgusting, if true.

Did they find a way to add a donation ticker or something yet so they don't have to read them out constantly?

lol Stepmania. Interesting.

As cringeworthy as some of the donation readouts are, relegating to a donation ticker would be even more soul crushing.

Like, there would be no personality left to the whole thing.

Dry, yet true.

I don't have any proof off the top of my head, but usual threads on /v/ and /srg/ usually bring up how much people get paid for these events. I think Mike Uyama makes a ton of money for this. We're talking being involved in two events is enough for him to live off of as a contractor for such things. I don't know if that was before the creation of Games Done Quick LLC, which I think also pays 7-10 other people.

I usually ignore this jazz, because it is usually a mountain of salt and shade no matter what way one looks at it. This might give more data, but I believe it looks at PCF as a whole, not just for this. It's probably not Susan G. Komen bad, but it seems a bit bloated. But isn't that the case of nearly every American enterprise in 2015?

I think having someone check them for content and passing them through as text on stream, along with verbal readouts of significant donations would be alright.

Something has to be better than the constant back of forth of "streamer is talking" vs. "I need to read donations out"

I have a ton of problems with the way GDQs are currently being run, but stick with actual issues instead of stuff like
Is Mike Uyama still "sick" and won't make yet another public appearance despite making around six figures for each of these events?
Oh come on. It is a six figure amount... Split among almost 20 people. You can have legitimate complaints about that amount, but don't try to spin it into "it's all going to one guy who's not actually doing anything!"

Oh man! I will be all over this. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. I love watching these, and I'll try to donate as best I can (holiday broke-assedness).

Never said he didn't do nothing. It's just as the head of this, he's been headless for..what is it, a year and a half now?

I'm more bothered by his public vanishing than anything else. :P

In all honesty though, despite people's gripes with GDQ, is there really any other alternative?

Who has the:

A. Money
and
B. Time

to set up and run an equivalent operation themselves.

I'm still probably going to watch AGDQ, or at least certain individual runs just to see/support that specific runner, but this is sort of a "Well there isn't anything else" situation.

There's ESA, but that's a European speedrun thing, no?

Oddest thing ever is Fire Emblem on the first day. Gwim was awesome on the other game last year and he had a great run with good commentary, but it is definitely not for everyone.

Must be Sakurai's doing.

Path of Radiance is a boring speedrun compared to Radiant Dawn though, so much less action and it's not even that much shorter.

it's a shame the NA release of Fates is after this cause they could've done a version bid war

It's really hard to follow exactly what these issues are given how decentralised the community seems to an outsider like me. Do you know of anywhere that actually summarises all of this with sources, or is it all spread across forum posts and the like?

(Awesome work with your runs, by the way!)

This is why I just tune in for the show and don't follow all the behind-the-scenes stuff.

Though I agree with Cyan that they'd be somewhat better off to stick with MSF instead of PCF. Oh well.

So Romscout really was fired? I heard people talking about that, but I wasn't sure if it was a joke or an exaggeration or something like that. Surprising.

ESA or the countless other small charity speedrunning marathons that pop up every few weeks? There is a ridiculous amount of this type of content out there, but for the average viewer AGDQ and SGDQ is all they know/care about due to how prominent it has become. Problem is that it's no longer about the community banding together to do something for a good cause, they're a disposable means to an ends in an event that's clinically planned to maximise exposure and donations.

Great list. I've really been entertained by speed running since SGDQ this past summer. Really stoked to see Outlast on there. I'm surprised since they try to keep the show PG-13 and, well, there's quite a lot of dong in that game.

Uhhh Fire Emblem 3DS games would be boring as fuck with black screens of skipping.

I'm gone for most of the night the Awful Games block is happening and I'm heartbroken.

At least hoping I'll be back by Lagoon, PJ's runs of that are great

I have a lot of gripes about the event organizers and their vision of the event, but I really respect their hustle.

I mean hell, the GDQ series started out with a dozen people in someone's living room only a few years ago, right?

i' ve been proposing these guys a Wii Punch Out Motion Run.

It would be really entertaining to see these wizards doing a legit run with balance board and Wii Remote/Nunchuk. The other Punch Out runs, while amazing as always, are somewhat burned out by now.

The Mario Maker Race has potential.

This is the year where I can already smell the bullshit new business side of GDQ getting in the way, maybe it won't show but who knows.

A lot of stuff changed hands I believe, and certan long time speedrunners who were there from the start are no longer involved.

Lots of shady shit huh. I wish I could find out more about it but they're doing a pretty good job at obfuscation.

It really isn't all that interesting

And it's definitely the kind of stuff you'd imagine to happen once something goes from a group of friends getting together to do something cool and worthwhile to corporate event that it currently is.

It's cool that they're doing this so soon after the new year and that it lasts almost a week. I hope to watch some of this. I watched some of SGDQ earlier this year.

Yeah the picking process is pretty fucking stupid. But whatever. Big Jon is great at the mega man games.

There's enough GDQ shadyness to warrant another thread to not seriously derail this one.

Here's my thoughts:
Same. I'll only watch a couple of runs, everything else can fuck off.

There's ESA, but that's a European speedrun thing, no?

Yeah, ESA is the biggest European speedrunning event, and it also has its own share of issues going on.

That's the problem, too. Doing small scale stuff is easy to set up and generally smooth, since most of the time it's a couple of buddies, but once the event starts growing to a certain size, and more and more people get involved with it in terms of work and money, the more likely it is that there'll be issues between people who are involved, and/or with how things are run.

GDQ is not exempt from this, neither is ESA.

More like organizations are slaves to who foots the bill.
It's just how real world works.

I'm looking forward to it, the Ori run in particular.

I think I agree.
