I really cant help but wonder if there is more to this light side and dark side stuff to Kylo Ren. We do not know his purpose and I feel like he is the farthest thing from Snokes lackey. I get the vibe his purpose is his own.

What does he really want from Luke? I dont think his motives are the same as Snokes in any way

The impression I got with the Starkiller Base is that the New Order found a remote planet somewhere and build their stuff within to avoid being noticed.

The better question is what the fuck does snoke even want with a dejected old man who can't be arsed to leave a desolate rock.

One of the novels talks about new technology being built/experimented with beyond the other rim where some remnants of the empire go after the fall of the empire. I assume that's the hint at the origins of the First Order and Starkiller base.

LOL I hope it's not a love interest, which would be even sadder. Black leads gets to be the bait and switch, can't be equal to the lead, can't be romantically involved with the lead, becomes the comedic relief. Maybe he'll be lucky enough to be back to sanitation by IX.

Finn was not comedic relief. He took on a fucking dark Jedi with no training. Not to mention all the other bad ass stuff he did.

Wait, what. One (or two) of these actresses will be new leads in VIII. Finn is also a lead.

For sure true but we get several clues as viewers that Kylo isnt necessarily in this to serve Snoke or The New Order or anything other than himself. I think his motives are his own and I'm very interested in what they are

Hux makes a comment near the beginning about the finding the droid with the map to Luke. Kylo is VERY adamant about it. Hux says something along the lines of "don't let your personal feelings get in the way of of what leader Snoke wants" or something like that.

My question is what is Ren's personal feelings? Everyone's mission is to find Luke. The Resistance, FO, Ren, Snoke. But Hux makes it seem like Ren is up to something more.

Agreed 100%. We get other clues too. Such as when Han tells Kylo that Snoke is using him and will crush him when he's finished. I get the impression he already was well aware of this and not just some "servant". I almost feel like he is using Snoke not the other way around

He just wants to ask, "Hey man, what did it feel like to kill your dad? For me, it felt bad man."

Then Luke is all, "I dunno what ol' Smokey told ya but i didn't kill him."

Then Kylo is like "NOOOOOOOOO!"

questions:

why are the 'resistance' and the new republic not more closely aligned? how was the first order allowed to come about? everybody decided the empire was bad (so it got destroyed) and somehow this freak nazi faction is allowed to carve a planet into a giant death star? when the resistance attacked the giant planet death star, why was it only with x-wings? the rebel alliance of the OT had a fleet of starships, where'd they go? why is the resistance 'fleet' (which seems to be like 20 x-wings) so petty and weak? why isn't the republic full on board with snuffing out the goddamn space nazis?

its quite possible that the answers to these questions were in the movie and i missed them ..

It's possible they are love interests, but it's not like Finn is ONLY the comedic relief. he's scared, brave, etc. all at the same time.

I do agree with you however that I hope he doesn't get relagated to that sort of background character that only serves to make Rey look stronger as a character. Finn is a lead. They need to treat him like one as well. He doesn't even have to end up with Rey. Those two work well together on screen. But he needs to come into his own. The writers better do him justice.

I really wish Finn x Rey is going to be a real thing.

It's endearing and their interaction is really the highlight of the movie for me. And anyways, when is the last time a black leading man gets paired up with the beautiful while lady leading man? Even Will Smith as far as I can remember never gets treated that way.

Not that I wish that Rey is treated as a "trophy" for Finn to win, mind you, but the basics are already there for them to pursue something more significant, and I really hope they continue that.

I prefer Rey not hook up with anyone...unless it was with another woman. Cause that would be awesome.

Please, please, this so much. About zero chance though i'm thinking in not only a Star Wars movie but a Disney movie. Same with FinnXPoe probably, just heavily hinted bordering on at most baiting.

Even Will Smith as far as I can remember never gets treated that way.

Haven't seen it, but I think that was the case in his last movie, 'Focus'

What I don't get is that Kylo seems to be getting visions of Anakin or something ("Show me again, the darkness" or whatever he said to Vader's helmet). If those visions aren't Snoke deceiving him, then what are they? The real Anakin? :/

How did Nazi Germany rise up and take over chunks of Europe.

Winning governments who emerge from war are hesitant to start another and can get caught by surprise/fear/complacency. Add in that the First Order ya know built their thing in the farthest area of space.

"I will finish, what you started"

The prophecy of bringing balance to the force, Anakin's entire "purpose"

The constant references to both Light Side and Dark Side with Kylo

The whole "he isn't Sith he's something new"

I reaaaaaaally wonder if we are looking at some kind of new rogue duality type character with his own interpretations of what The Force is

I want Finn and Rey to happen as well. Their chemistry is great together. As you said. I don't want her to be a trophy. But I think their chemistry could lead to them being a thing. It's honestly up the writers where they want to take things.

As far as Han and Leia is concerned, I recently rewatched ANH and Empire, and I forgot how much Han harasses Leia. If Empire released today like that, it wouldn't fly. :/
I think that would be terrible. It basically says that a woman can't be a kickass heroine and lead unless she was gay.

I hope Rey gets to be a hero and get the guy, everything that is taken for granted in male led stories.

While I was bummed we didn't see him more than those five seconds he has done a lot of work to get in shape hopefully to kick some ass in the next film.
From a recent Time Magazine article:

Looking a bit like Ron Rifkin on Alias in that shot.
"Rey, I need you to recover another Jedi artifact."

Enjoyed the film quite a bit, might go rewatch it in 2D. Was experiencing quite a bit of cross-talk or ghosting when I saw it in 3D and I don't really remember any "wow 3D" moments other than the shots down the Starkiller base shafts.

Maybe he wants to do away with both the Sith and Jedi and replace it with one entity that he controls.

I think ultimately Ren wants to be Vader. He'll never be Vader but he'll do what it takes to "rule the galaxy" so to speak. I think Snoke and Ren both want to kill Luke but for different reasons.

Snoke just wants to get rid of the last Jedi. I feel Kylo wants to kill Luke because he may feel he's responsible for Vader showing that "weakness" when he killed the emperor. So I feel Kylo wants to kill Luke or possibly try and turn him maybe? The latter is unlikely. But take his place as the heir to the Skywalker legacy.

Ren will kill Snoke in the next movie imo.

Maybe he wants to do away with both the Sith and Jedi and replace it with one entity that he controls.

I could see something like that actually being real. I'm not convinced he's just "Dark Lord Not Sith but kinda bad guy" I think this guy is something we haven't seen in a Star Wars movie yet. He worships Vader. The last thing Vader did was save a Jedi and Killed the Sith. I'm not saying hes pure good either. I think he uses duality. Vader hinself was both Light and Dark in many ways, and Kylo would be aware of this.

People need to stop saying this. Yes, at face value the plot, keyword plot, was a retread but there are a lot of layers going on beneath the surface that you are missing. A second viewing may be in order.

True. Kylo is nothing like Vader and Rey is much different than Luke. I saw it three times now and I liked it more with each viewing.

It's only a retread at a superficial look, but they aren't wrong.

I'm still flabbergasted that J.J. Abrams actually put a THIRD goddamn Death Star in a SW movie. Could've just had Finn, Rey, Poe, & Kylo racing to find Luke first but I guess that wouldn't lean on ANH as much as JJ wanted.

that makes sense, but it still seems odd to me that some dudes who look exactly like the recently deposed evil doers were allowed to make a giant space planet weapon, which is known about, and all that the good people of the galaxy are able to throw at it is a handful of x-wings.

Because gay female led genre films are so prevalent. We just had Hunger games for what you suggest, let alone every other female hero in the history of genre cinema.

Eh I just think the seeds are kinda planted with Rey and Finn. Unless they do a 180 and have her end up with Poe or something. If they don't go that route I just don't see her romancing anyone.

Yeah my first viewing despite loving it was full of me going lol A New Hope. Second viewing felt like a completely different movie.

This interview with Charlie Rose actually made me feel bad for George.

That is kinda sad... Damn.

The last 3 years I've been like "screw George Lucas, he had his turn and fucked it up, Disney will right his wrongs"

But now that the movie is actually out and it doesn't have the exact same Lucas flavor.... I kind of miss him and his work, warts and all (and I mean warts)

This so much. So much was different. Kylo Ren operated completely differently from Darth Vader in a new hope. He was down on every planet interacting with all the characters.

No one knew about the space weapon that's the point. And the reveal of the space weapon was them using it to destroy the entire Senate and a huge chunk of its fleet. The Republic was basically nuclear Pearl Harbored

Yeah makes sense, for Finn and Rey though to me it seemed exclusively on Finn's end as Rey was very specifically non romantic it seemed. Maybe she will just be the zen like perfect Jedi like you mention.

Guys, with the LOTR thread and the Finn/Rey friendship stuff, I feel like it'd be totally awesome if Episode VIII managed to pull off a cliffhanger ending on the same emotional caliber as Fellowship of the Ring.

I have zero faith that will happen. I am hopeful that Rian will construct a better movie than Abrams. (And I liked Ep7)

ah okay. i guess i didnt remember correctly when its existence was revealed. but still after that all they throw at it is a little scrabbled together group of fighters. seemed weird to me at the time. loved the movie anyway of course.

That would be pretty god damn difficult. The end of Fellowship is an absolute masterwork

They got their almost kissing scene interrupted by BB8.

I sent an email to the theatre chain I went to about the dialogue volume being low in my screening, and they offered to send two complimentary passes and a free popcorn, which is nice and appreciated.

I also bought $7 popcorn and it wasn't very good.

I plan to see Star Wars again sometime, and my sister wants to go. She doesn't like the genre, but her music teacher said they should go, so I may go with them.
