Awesome Games Done Quick 2016: January 3rd - 10th.

More like organizations are slaves to who foots the bill.
It's just how real world works.

That too. Unless you are a rich as hell person who can provide the venue, equipment and manpower needed to set up this stuff, you're at the whim of other people who provide these things.

edit: oh god the GDQ drama discussion that's starting can really fuck off.
edit 2: not saying there isn't stuff worthy of discussion/analysis as GDQ is a very interesting beast, but it'd be nice to keep this thread about the games. also I'm traumatized from bad twitch chat discussions on the topic :p

Really looking forward to this! I'd hoped to see Axiom Verge in SGDQ and it's great to see that it's made it in this time around.

Shame about the timing of that run for me, but I'll catch it from the archived VODs.

Won't be able to watch more than a fraction of what I want due to travelling. But GDQ are great events, hope to be able to donate some during some favorite game speedrun.

From the schedule I'll be watching for sure...

Mario 64 race
Resident Evil HD Remaster (Carcinogen is a great runner)
Metroid Fusion and Prime
The Ninja Gaiden block
Donkey Kong Country block
Super Mario Maker races (these should be amazing)
Super Mario World (the skill on display in speedrunning this game is unreal, most levels are completed facing backwards!)
Starfox 64 (again the skill level is mental)
Banjo Kazooie
Bloodborne (because it's new)
Diddy Kong Racing dual race

And probably whatever else reccommended to watch from this thread. Gona be a great week!

Tomorrow is the day GREAT! :D I really love AGDQ and SGDQ with this type of events we can show that working together and that gaming can make awesome things

Are we going to have a private Twitch chat only for members of NeoGAF?

Should we make a new updated thread?

I don't really think its worth making a new thread for, that would be a Cyan call to make.

The updates would just include run and donation related things as the week progresses, and keeping on top of the GAF chat we have every year.

All right I was just asking for curiosity I joined GAF 4 months ago so I still have much to learn :)

OH SHIT AGDQ IS THIS WEEK?? YES!

It's my last week off of school, so I know what I'm going to be doing all day every day!

They're doing Darksiders 2 in 1:05? Can't wait to see that, lol. It takes me about that long to beat the first dungeon.

This is the type of thread that would definitely benefit from OP updates. Shame the member who started this is banned now.

Nothing for me on the first day, Sadly the event starts during my workday on Sunday and I'm asleep once the Monkey Ball games are done :/
But man do I WANT to skip gym on the 4th for all that speedrunning goodness?
Then again I'd be back just in time for DS2 to finish and the DMC games so it's all good~

Man why is Prinny at such a garbage time?

Ghost in the Shell deserves to be at a GDQ. One day I'll get good and share the game with the world.

I'd love to have this on at work... but no local wifi and my data plan will not support such an indulgence...

Guess I'll catch it all on Youtube over the next month <_<

For the record (and I really shouldn't have to reiterate this, but I wanted to make sure no one would call me every name under the sun) I'm all for the whole charity shtick and anything that's done for a good cause - and I don't know much about these kinds of events in general - but can anyone apply to take part in this? Or...God forbid...do you have to be of a certain level of popularity and/or have x number of subs/followers on YouTube/Twitter/whatever?

I'm not a fan of speedruns/glitchruns, but like I said, if it's for charity...then that's cool. Still...

Everyone can apply, but you have to be good enough at the game and stream at least every now and then so people can judge your skill. Popularity isn't usually an issue, but some runners or games are obviously chosen because they are popular.

when multiple people who play the same game sign up usually the fastest runner is selected but it depends on travel and attendance closer to the date too, sometimes people find out they can't attend so someone takes their place.

You don't need to be famous, just good at the game to the point where you are able to speedrun it well.

The main reason for so many people attending is popularity, over the last 4-5 years it's evolved from a lounge at a friends house to a hall with 600+ seats, projectors and to the point there the entire hotel is just for GDQ.

PCF is not a particularly efficient charity, and I'd strongly prefer they stuck with Doctors Without Borders, but it's not really cool to say things like "PCF takes most of the money and doesn't actually use it for what they speak about" when that's not true. Be careful about spreading rumors when you're not entirely sure of what you're talking about. We've already seen in the first few pages here people spreading incorrect information about Werster and presenting old Twitch drama as something SGDQ-related. I know it's fun to spread gossip, but please make sure you have sources.

I too was dismayed to see PCF slandered here. I'm not about to derail this thread with an extended back-and-forth, but I would sincerely hate to see GDQ's fundraising success harmed by unsourced rumor and backbiting. Could PCF be more efficient? Probably. But they spend almost 75% of their expenses on programs, not overhead. Those programs include "peer-reviewed grants [that] have been awarded to nearly 450 early-career scientists from more than 150 of the leading academic medical centers nationwide ... utiliz[ing] a research proposal review system similar to that of the National Institutes of Health." PCF's website even names the researchers and programs that benefit from GDQ funds (example 1, 2).

You can learn more about PCF's financials, and research other charities, at Charity Navigator.

Yesss, I had no idea this was on this week. Looking forward to Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Ratchet & Clank 3 and Bloodborne the most.

Well, they're popular because they can play well AND present well. They're not chosen by how many twitch subs they have. Someone might be a OOT savant, but if another guy with a slightly worse time but a better personality steps up, they'd pick that person instead. There's 10s of thousands of people to entertain and it takes a little more than just being good at games.

As someone who tries to watch every run, even on a backlog, please please please give lesser known runners and games a shot. There are a lot of really good runners out there who regularly only get 16 people in their chat and run a non-Nintendo/non-nostalgia driven game and are really worth your time to watch.

For example, though you wouldn't think so due to the series in general being pretty popular, very few people are interested in the Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal run. However, the runner made a hype video to get people excited and tune into it and I really suggest you give it a look and see what kind of fun stuff he'll be doing.

Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal Speedrun Hype

Every year some of my favorite runs were ones at odd times with less popular games and runners.

And while there is certainly some stuff going on around the GDQs, the amount of gossipy drama and hearsay taken at face value is kind of disgusting. Never take anything said on r/speedrun as anything remotely trustworthy. That place is a wretched hive of scum and villainy.

then go away

theyre not entirely an efficient charity though

and most of the issues raised were with GDQ as an organization.

Gonna watch this as much as I can despite how busy I am this year compared to year's past. Gonna miss a lot of afternoon games on Monday and Tuesday due to work.

Argh... love watching this stuff, but where is my Twitch app for PS3! I'd rather have this going on my TV than have to watch on my PC.

And I swear every year it's like they plan out the exact games I want to watch and schedule them for 1:30 AM. They have spies somewhere in my house, it is the only logical explanation!

Glad they are finally doing some new games this time around.

Endless amounts of Chrono Trigger and Super Metroid got tiresome. Very much looking forward to Splatoon and Bloodborne!

Can someone please explain to me all this "corporate shadiness" with AGDQ? This is the first I'm hearing about this in this thread.

I'm looking forward to Super Mario 64, Shovel Knight (maybe), and Mega Man games.

The best part about speed running is not that they play it fast, but that they play so well.

don't have any proof off the top of my head, but usual threads on /v/ and /srg/ usually bring up how much people get paid for these events. I think Mike Uyama makes a ton of money for this. We're talking being involved in two events is enough for him to live off of as a contractor for such things. I don't know if that was before the creation of Games Done Quick LLC, which I think also pays 7-10 other people.

You say that someone is paid "six figures" for this and all you have is something you might've read on fucking 4chan? That's some really, really weak shit.

Anyways, don't much care about some behind the scenes drama as long as the event is good and the charity is okay. Are there better charities than PCF? Yes, but by all accounts it's a decent choice.
