The lament was a joke. I just hate being sick because rather than playing piano, studying wine, or writing, I'm lounging about doing nothing. I also lost my voice mid-way through the New Years shift which made the rest of the night interesting to say the least.

Really digging the Somm life though. Just wish suits afforded more mobility.

I was a waiter for a while. Developing an interest (and subsequent expertise) in wine has allowed me to carve out a nice career path as a Sommelier and will open a lot of doors to different areas as I build my resume and and work towards the higher levels of wine certification.

If you guys haven't seen Somm on Netflix, it's a really well-made and enjoyable documentary about a few guys working towards their Master Sommelier test, which is often called the hardest test of any kind in the world. It's an enjoyable watch whether or not you're into wine.

I've been on a wine trip for like the past 2 months. Feels good man. What does one do to become an expert in wine?

Well we advanced Friday afternoon which means next advance is technically Monday afternoon, but I put Monday night whenever down just in case we needed to delay

but at this rate I don't think we'll last past Sunday night at the very latest

Sounds awesome. I imagine it's been through California?

It's mostly a lot of studying and doing tastings or drinking with other people to develop the palette and understand what you're tasting. Though the biggest part of my job is understanding what people like based on their terrible descriptions of things and being able to articulate why whatever wine I'm selling them on is perfect for them.

I fell into a management position at a steakhouse that had just gotten its liquor license a couple years ago. I was doing tastings with wine vendors a few times a week to decide on wines to put on our list (which was pretty small and pathetic). Developed a relationships with some of the vendors who really pushed for me to get into the business and I had a pretty strong interest in it as well. From there I had something of a mentor teach me a ton of stuff and I did a lot of independent studying.

There are a few different organizations that do exams and certifications, but I went through the one the most people recognize.

HOW DO YOU FIND ANIME GIFS FOR EVERY OCCASION?!

I think I found what you were talking about, Ez. Was it about a blind tasting with and without price tags and how perceptions changed?

Obviously at work, I try to sell expensive wines, but when I'm drinking my favorites are the values I can find. I stock up on plenty of bottles under $10 at Trader Joe's. I'm not pretentious when it comes to wine- probably because I'm a cheap bastard.

Basically your entire profession is a lie and in essentially every blind test the ability to pick out wines is wholly random.

Also Wine Spectator is corrupt as fuck.

Were these studies done with sommeliers who had at least reached the Advanced stage if not Master stage?

One reason I'm confident in my ability to reach at least the advanced stage, is that I'm pretty good at blind tasting. There is a method to it and discerning the region and grapes used is usually fairly easy.

Now, if the question is whether you can discern the quality of the producer, thus the price of the wine through the deductive tasting method... then they might be right to a decent extent. On the first episode of a sommerlier show called Uncorked, 3 somms all correctly chose the varying price points of the 3 Chablis they tasted.

Granted for reasons I won't bore you with, that is one of the easiest areas in the world to discern the varying levels of production quality.

This is mistaking wine snobbery and what sommeliers do. Of course taste is subjective. The primary function of a sommelier is to choose wines from their selections that the people will enjoy based on their tastes (while providing perceived value and yaddayaddasalesman bullshit). I sell plenty of wine I don't like. Outside of some Sancerres, I don't really enjoy Savingnon blanc. I still sell a ton of it. I don't like over-oaked California Chardonnays, but I'll gladly sell a $100 bottle of Chateau Montelana to anyone who thinks they'll enjoy it.

I don't consider myself much of a wine snob though- I routinely drink cheap stuff; I just know what kind of cheap stuff I'm more likely to enjoy.

But in a blind tasting, I can tell the difference between a pinot noir and cabernet or a French wine from an American wine fairly easily if they're produced in traditional ways. Hell, I can usually tell if the oak a wine has been aged in American or French because (if the oak is new) they impart different characteristics.

Most are trash, but if you see Bota boxed wine, they're pretty good.

They moved from glass bottles to boxes to be ecologically friendly. You're getting a nice, drinkable wine at cooking wine prices with their stuff. I've poured it for people who didn't know it was from a box and they really enjoyed it.
