Debating whether or not I should get the first edition or wait it out for the inevitable upgraded versions a year from now. If it was like PC parts where you can hold out for 5 years I wouldn't mind but I feel like these things are going to take off and improve with new versions much faster than GPU's, CPU's etc..

I kind of wonder about the refresh cycle. I think 2 year refresh cycle would be good. 1 year might be too fast.

Yep, I feel it'll be like mobile phones at this stage. I know the better iPhone will come next year, and the next year, and the next. We can wait forever for better stuff.

I'll just upgrade if it's worth it.

Never buy gen 1. Let other people be beta testers.

I feel people have been testing DK1 and DK2 enough, it's now time to try it myself with the third version.

How would it be a dis-service? The touch can function without the motion controls, having a game that doesn't use them would in no way shape or form hurt the game or the developers, people would simply play it as thought it were a normal controller. Nothing would change.

Name me a single peripheral outside the rumble pak for any major console or system that came out post-release and became a mainstay that every-game/dev built toward expecting people to use it?

Meanwhile I'll list those that failed:
32x
Dreamcast VMU
N64 expansion pack
Nintendo power glove
Nintnedo VRU

I think the big difference here is that those are all for consoles. Different market. The other difference is that Vive shipping with motion controllers and PSVR working with Move day 1 means devs will still make experiences for motion controls and tweak them across "platforms". Those experiences aren't going to be here for a while though so Rift launching early without motion controllers doesn't affect it much.

The first few years we're going to see rapid iteration on the Rift as they bring in eye tracking and new displays and optics, amongst whatever new tech they add. It's going to be extremely hot while VR begins to mature and I think we will see a new version each year that brings in new features. If you're worried about that, at the very least I would wait until eye tracking and foveated rendering really get figured out and implemented across games and devices because that will be a huge change for VR.

what are the differences between this and the samsung VR? just allows you to use your PC's power for gaming?

not trolling...just curious. samsung vr is really cool

Rift has got positional tracking. In layman's term you can lean in closer or further, stand up, squat, crawl, etc and they can all be tracked. You can also walk around but this aspect is limited.

Also much better graphical fidelity.

Yeah unless you're super bothered by screen door (which has been mitigated greatly on this based on impressions) this should be an absolutely amazing first hmd experience compared to the dks. I doubt most people will be disappointed outside of those types that came in expecting the fucking matrix or something.

I have never tried anything VR as of yet and not sure how much I would like it, but I am going to pre-order regardless and then decide to keep it or get my money back on the pre-order. I have a rig that can easily handle it with no issues at all, but just feel like it is going to be really good.

Really hope they weren't just blowing hot air.

Same. My bet is on something related to the chaperone system/camera on the outside of the hmd, things like pet and people detection. On the less realistic end google tango like 1:1 scale 3d mapping of your play space. Foveated rendering is a bloody pipe dream though.

I'll be preordering.

Question time: I built an Win10Pro, i7-3770 3.40GHz, 16Gb DDR3 1600MHz, 2x256Gb SSD Samsung & 2 x 1Gb Quadro 2000.

I'm about to rip out the Quadros and buy a gaming video card again, for VR & PC games. What graphics card do y'all recommend for the Rift?

980ti if you can. It's above what Oculus is recommending and meets the needs for Elite Dangerous VR, and probably most things for a while.

I mean, it's not as though the pre-orders will be up, and there still won't be a price. No one's being tricked...

Well of course not, and I never said anything about them trying to trick people.. just found it interesting is all...( ̄__ ̄;)

Thx, in Aus seems they go for about $1-1.3K, which is manageable. It's also nice some of them have 3 display ports too, which works for 3 out of 4 of my monitors.

Any word on drivers, do they all run the unified Nvidia drivers just fine? Or should I look to stick to brand name cards?

Shit. Glad it's happening, but damn...December was an expensive month. I need some space before smacking the wallet again.

Someone else would be better off answering that in detail. I am in the process of getting my rig together in the next couple weeks so I can't really say one way of the other. From what I have read though, Nvidia and AMD are both getting behind supporting VR in a big way so drivers should be on point for the Rift and the Vive. Nvidia just released SLI for VR support so hopefully we'll see games taking advantage of that as well.

Wait, they force us to buy a xbox one controller? What the hell, I already have two of them, I hope it's optional.

Adds almost nothing to the cost according to Palmer. He even suggested selling it if you didn't want it and you would come out ahead money wise.

The state of the Canadian dollar makes me want to cry. There's no way this thing is going to cost anything less than $800 CAD with shipping costs. I just can't warrant the purchase at that price, especially when there's no return policy.

Looking forward to seeing where the technology takes us though.

Although I probably won't buy the Rift, I'm ultra curious about the pricing.
Also as other people are speculating if they plan an iterative release strategy similar to mobiles.

They said that they are including them at cost and that at the price at which they are getting them, you can easily sell the controller at a profit if you don't want or need it.

I skipped a year on my 2-year upgrade path, and jumped from a 670 to a 980ti Hybrid for $700 on Black Friday. Way more then what is needed for 1080/144hrz, but I was aiming at VR.

3770k clocked to 4.5g hauls like a rocket. Intel does a new CPU/chipset ever 11 months, and with very little 'gaming' speed increases between them. This will do splendid.

To quote Mr. Gerstman, "areyoureadytoridetherollercoaster?"

"Right you are, my mistake. Still, see his more recent statements in the tweets I edited in. I think things changed between then and now based on his wording."

His more recent tweets also include one saying that they're still on track for a full Rift setup to be around $1500, including PC. Not that I expect this to be south of $450.

The "Rift Ready" PCs that they are advertising on the Rift website are all either starting at $949 or $999. I have a feeling they're going to start at $499.

You're really wondering how much info a screen you wear on your head collects?

Square footage of room it's used in
Possible video
Possible sound
Hours played
Types of games played
Controller input behaviors (possible key log)
Types of videos watched
Types of websites used
Where eyes were looking on said websites
Other PC info when it is connected to a computer

This is just off the top of my head. Can all be used to develop very targeted consumer or nefarious info which is valuable to the right entities.

Of all the companies to not trust with this info, Facebook tops the charts.

How do you even internet if you're that paranoid about Facebook and a VR headset?

I internet just fine without Facebook.
Now that Facebook is publicly traded Mark has a fiduciary duty to his shareholders which runs against the consumers' best interest.

Oculus lost all credibility when joining this monstrosity.

Yup, 500 is a safe bet. Some of the more seasoned oculus reddit folks are convinced of the high end, 600 +/- $50. Hoping for lower!

Lol. Possible key log? Where eyes were looking? This list is a mix of delusional paranoia and vast ignorance regarding a number of topics, including the capabilities of the Rift.

In Toronto, canada here. Does anyone know if best buys,/Eb games/ Amazon, etc will have pre-orders as well or just through occulous/valve themselves?

Big differences are it's lighter, higher resolution, wider FOV (than DK2), better optics, better tracking.

To add to that the CV comes with built in detachable headphones w/hq drivers. Most interested in how good the cans sound, and specifically how well implemented the positional audio is in things like Eve.

Good question, Palmer has said in the past you'd be able to get it at places like BB. We'll likely find out come Wednesday.

For folks with glasses, what was your experience like? I'd be curious to know impressions from people who have tried the other versions.
