So, assuming we buy both games at launch, we'll both be paying $70 for Death Stranding 2 and $80 for The Outer Worlds 2.

Only a tiny fraction of the Tota Addressable Market for this game has Game Pass Ultimate - where the game will be launching on day one without additional cost.
It may not matter to you who will be renting this game, which is fine. It matters to the majority, however, who may be looking to buy it.

This is not the first time you're (willfully?) ignoring PC Game Pass and those who still maintain the Console tier. Both places this also launches on day one without additional cost.

I think only PS consoles are where they don't offer gamepass.
But they offer physical copies there, their preferred method of playing games day 1 in affordable way by selling them.
They have all the bases covered. $80 is issue if you buy game day 1 and want to keep forever. Those players should wait for a sale I guess.
$80 is far bigger issue on Nintendo system where there are no sales.

The Outer Worlds 2 director says not every RPG is "for every single person," so Obsidian is "not going to make a game for literally everybody" because "it waters down the experience a lot"
He wants to "make sure that the role-playing is really strong"
This is hitting all the right notes, Obsidian are making something special here.
