PlayStation 4 hits 35.9 million sold through to end users

Its an interesting question, may get a little lost in this thread. I think VR will have a very good launch, there are enough VR evangelists and people with deep pockets to drive sales.

VRs big challenge is 2017+, will they get the price to a point where the mass market will buy it and will the software support continue enough past this year.
true, so far my anticipation of the device is feels similar to Wii. Something new and fresh to try. I have to show my family and non gaming friends, but after 2-3 months I'm probably going back to SFV. I guess Sony would be ok with that if it meant 10 million devices sold, but Shu says it's the start of a new gaming shift like 3D was on Ps1 and N64.

So much speculation, needs to launch already! Lol

To put this in perspective, Playstation 3 was nowhere near 36 million units sold in January 2009

PS4 is where PS3 was at in June 2010 I believe.

Its cool and all, but i dont understand why its still selling so well.

I mean since its launch, nothing really improved in OS or Services aka PSN. Some of the first Party games for my taste are really uninteresting and really dont provide much if you are multiplayer gamer.

I mean XboxOne IMO does it way better at the moment. Monthly OS Updates, we got a completly redesigned and faster UI, BC and the Games with Gold selection is way better too over the month and with BC even better.

Sure its great that its selling well, but i really cant understand it. Sure the Hardware is better. But cmon nobody can deny that Sony is really lazy so far.

It's because Microsoft and Nintendo collectively shot themselves in the foot doing idiotic business decisions.

Well deserved Sony. You made the best console, with the best software and services, and people are speaking with their wallets. What im wondering, do Sony save $249 to counter the NX launch? And do MS pull an OG Xbox and throw in the towel on the One 4 years in and launch a new box as soon as they can?

Well, he just quoted me with his opinion as well, nothing of bad. :p

I expect the PS4 to peak in 2016, and then i expect a decline in 2017 and 2018, but more than the decline, i don't see PS4 selling like it did during 2015. That's why i thing those years will be over 2014, but under 2015.

PS3 / 360 generation was a phenomenal, with those console to increased all years since 2011... i jsut don't see this happen again.

For example, the PS2, even if at the end it got insane legs, it peaked in 2002, and is declined in 2003 and 2004.

But it got a boost in 2005 and 2006. PS2 slim.

I see PS4 to peak during the firsts year like PS2 ( 2016 ) but it won't have a boost in the years to come...

Of course i may be wrong, there are a lot o thing, games, price, PS5 release year...

Ps4 will sell better than Ps3 in every single year, if ps3 sold 14m in their 7th year, Ps4 will crush it.

You know, that question losses its impact after been asked over and over again. 2/10 for making me respond to that.

Regarding the news, congratulations Sony for this huge userbase that you have accomplished and man, with this year packed with, what I expect, fantastic games all around, I don't see them slowing down with their sales.

Pretty amazing numbers.

Sshhh

Its going to be okay my child.

man this game is just too cool.

Are you guys really expecting a date and price for PSVR at CES? I dunno... I think GDC is more likely.

edit: oh wait GDC is in mid-march. Might be a bit late if they indeed launch it in H1 2016.

Maybe they are preparing a "PlayStation Meeting" for VR? Something like a dedicated conference/event to blow every info out: price, software, launch date, etc.

How much wasted space do you think is in the current ps4? Unless they find a way to bring the thermals down, I don't see them shrinking it by much,

I don't think it is so much a case of making a smaller unit but a redesigned one, that has quieter fans much like the xbone and a better wifi chip.

This may have been addressed like 4 pages back... But are you parodying the Kotaku article on the PS4 year review? I'm going to give you the benefit of doubt and just think you are...

Anyway, hopefully Sony talks more PSVR this week! I am sure they will have 40+ million out by the time VR comes to retail.

i dont think the nx launch needs to be countered with anything at all

God damn. They are unstoppable lol

I honestly thought it would slow down because there wasn't really any exclusives this fall lol

Wow.. That's a fantastic number! Congratulations to Sony!

Now, let's get some games out and 2016 should be even more incredible.

Do we have updated Wii U/Xbone numbers? This has got to put PS4 LTD ahead of combined XbOne/WiiU right? Or very close at least. Now we know why MS didn't give an install base update in their PR number spin the other day.

I'm gonna guess around 45 million by the end of the year. Could be bigger if there's another price drop.

So you think it's going to sell less than 10 million for the year? I would guess much closer to 20. I would guess by end of 2016 they'll be around 55.

Are you serious? You expect 2016 wich should be the peak year to be lower than this and 2014?

Ps4 sales in 2016 should hit 20m sold through.

Ya know, this fucking "salt" thing has got to be the biggest killer of actual intelligent discussion and debate that we have had in years.

Everybody that doesn't jump on the Sony love bandwagon isn't fucking "salty". Shit is so incredibly childish. As is the personal investment I am seeing from some people in Sony's sales, it's like friggin listening to sports fans talk about how "we're" gonna do this or "we" did that when referencing a team of individuals who don't know nor care about them. Get a grip.

I'm glad this thing is selling. It's good for this entire industry to have a console with this kind of runaway success, but I also feel that for me personally Sony themselves haven't done a great job so far. The main point being SONY. There are tons of great 3rd party games on the PS4 and that is ultimately what sells consoles, it always has been. However me and many others associate the Playstation brand with a certain level of first party support. An area that Sony has excelled in in every other generation and one where they have been faltering quite a bit this gen so far.

A lot of their biggest franchises are MIA, and that is why I personally don't feel like it's a great platform for me at the moment. I buy Playstation consoles for Sony games. I also primarily play on PC so their exclusives are the absolute only thing I have the PS4 for.

I am well aware that many others aren't like this and if it's your one system then the lineup so far has been pretty damn solid, though it really wasn't until 2015 which saw tons of great stuff release for it.

I also don't think the whole "it has no games" thing is accurate at all. Obviously that's complete bullshit. But it looks to me like the idea of new hardware is selling it just as much as software this time around.

I just want Sony to start releasing the games in the franchises that I have cared about for years. The constant delays of Uncharted are really an underline to this point. I am always on board with devs taking time to make games the best they can be, but so far a lot of their best first party studios have barely shown anything. That's where the disappointment stems from for me personally.

Regardless, it's good that it's successful. I hope it keeps them on the route they are on now rather than the way they were last gen. And I SURE as fuck hope it shows people that consoles aren't going anywhere.

Damn. I would like to know which bundles performed best - like Uncharted one or Battlefront one. Congrats Sony on this amazing numbers. Cheers to a better 2016.

Also is this better than Wii numbers (at the same time frame)?

Sony loves to toss their numbers out every chance they get. We all get it. They sold a TON of consoles...now how about they fix their network and put out some damn games.
Looks like they finally have the games issue sorted out this year. Now they just need to work on the network problems which is the only legitimate issue some can have with PS4 right now imo.

It really is a good console. I might wish it was a bit more powerful, but every time I look at it, I want to play something. It just has that look for me. It's like the original PS1 or the N64. I just look at those and want to play them.

I still don't know if I should buy a PS4 or not, ugh.

I can barely keep up with all the PC, 3DS and Wii U releases, and a lot of PS4 games are being ported to PC too.

I guess we are still 1 year away from Slim. We will see what happens in the meantime.
Ps4 in 2016 should get a lot more unique compared to Wiiu and even PC. Sony's WWS are starting to show up, and a lot of titles have bigger audiences on console. I'd say it will be the best time to pick it up this year and next. There is a lot of cross over with PC. For beefy rig peeps, I recommend a PC and Nintendo platform, Sony towards the end of the gen usually does have a nice collection of platform exclusives, but it's not their bread n butter like Nintendo.

Yes, today at 5PM PST they'll have a conf: https://blog.sony.com/ces/ but I think they'll wait some more to reveal their price...Oculus hasn't moved yet. Maybe we'll get a date though?
I bet both Sony and Oculus will reveal price and release date today. If Oculus is going to open preorders today I assume they'll announce both price and date today. If they do it after Sony's conference, Sony may announce their release date in the conference and wait a few hours to send the press release with the price.

Buy it. Amazing console.

I don't think the whole "it has no games" thing is accurate at all. Obviously that's complete bullshit. But it's also pretty obvious that incredible software isn't REALLY what's moving these things entirely. It seems like people are buying consoles for the hardware more than the software right now, due to being stuck with the 360/PS3 gen for so damn long.

I just want Sony to get their act together and start releasing the games in the franchises that I have cared about for years. The constant delays of Uncharted are really an underline to this point.
