PlayStation 4 hits 35.9 million sold through to end users

Basically they delivered what every gamer had been asking for forever. 'Strongest possible box at an affordable price - no gimmicks.'
So this...
PS3-Advert.jpg

... was a trap they prepared for Microsoft last gen.

Now I want to see Uncharted 4(and other exclusiver), PSVR and Japanese games making the best of this install base.

PS4 is gonna reach ~100M on the eve of the PS5 launch (~60M in the next 4-5 years is feasible), and maybe another 10-20M after the PS5 launch. It's not gonna do the 50M of the PS2(sub $99 consoles) post PS3 launch and also not tank like the PS3 did (specialized chips preventing steep price cuts).

Do we know if PS4 outsold Wii and PS2 on the same timeframe (would mean it's the fastest selling console 25 months after release)?

PS2 yes, Wii no.
Important to note that PS2 was available only in Japan for a while so that's why it's above it for now.

Indeed. Less is more.

Off-topic, but I'm playing through Until Dawn for the first time right now and Emily is so hilariously bitchy. I love her.

Agreed. Even my fiance, who is the nicest girl I've ever met, turned to me and said "I don't normally advocate hitting women, but I'll make an exception for Emily".

... And I love her for that so much. She has the best sections of the game too.

Until Dawn definitely made me happy with my PS4 over the holidays.

Haha. But hey, back in the day the fact that a PS3 was a blu-ray was damn cool and a boost over the competition. Now? No one cares. People expect all consoles to be able to stream movies & music, browse the internet and do all that smart-tv stuff. You can't sell a console using that to anyone anymore - it's just expected.

But 'This console plays games at a higher fidelity than that one, and get this - the better one is 100 dollars cheaper' - that's an unbeatable argument, right there.

Ye shall go wanting with your blatant attempts at nothing.

Sales threads bringing out the salt.
He is not being salty. Even Sony said they didnt know why it was selling as well as it was.

In 2014 I think someone at Sony said they didn't know why it was selling so well.
TBH it sounds like something Shu would say.

You were right:

Edit: tbh, Im not sure either why it is absolutely destroying the competition. I understand why it is "winning", but why is it DESTROYING the competition? and for SO long? Wtf?

I think the US takes a bigger share in the overall number of consoles sold during the holidays. December was a 5 week month too.

So 2 million!

You said "over 2m for sure" which mean you believe there is no way for sell under 2 million, and since 2 million, at least for me, seem already an hard prediction, yeah... btw:

I believe PS4 has sold 1.5 million during Black Friday, and 4.2 million in December... so, i will say 1.5 million in December NPD.

I can see 1.6m ( which was my first prediction) or 1.7m, 2 million can happen but is seriusly hard, definitively is not a given.

Woah amazing. What a beast. Not to mention there's still no big first party title yet. Uncharted 4 will be the first and I'm curious to see what kind of sales numbers it would bring.

By the time PlayStation VR launches they will have an install base of over 40 million PS4s to work with. Sony has a great chance to be the market leader with VR, I hope they dont fuck up with the price.

Price but especially support if Vita, Move etc are anything to go by.

Also, for be even more precise:

PS4 sales / shipments Yearly:

2013 - 4,200,000 / 4,500,000
2014 - 14,300,000 / 15,400,000
2015 - 17,400,000 / ?

We will know by end of January 2015 shipments. So far they are 9.40 million, i believe in around 8 million this quarter ( yes, i said 8 million :p ), so, gonna say 17.4 million shipped.

I believe PS4 will sell around 100 million LT.

My predictions:

2013 - 4,200,000
2014 - 14,300,000
2015 - 17,400,000
2016 - 18,000,000
2017 - 16,500,000
2018 - 14,500,000
2019 - 9,000,000 <---- PS5 year
2020 - 4,000,000
2021/2022 - 2,000,000

We will see.

PS3 did 14 million in its 7th year, you expect the PS4 (cheaper, more succesfull, dominant console, Sony more willing to lower price etc.) to do only 9 million in its 7th year? Even if PS5 is coming out that year, which is plausible. PS4 is not going to slow that much down, especially at a price range that even poor families can afford.

14,5m in 2018 would mean it is going back to PS3 level sales. in 3 years, not going to happen.

Yeah, hopefully they have more research now into why people are buying it.
And if I had to guess why it's doing so much better, it is just the most appealing to more people.
In Europe it was always going to do very well and Xbox would do okay but not great, and when it was cheaper in the US and UK I imagine most people didn;t see a reason to spend the extra money.
Also some people still think Xbox One doesn't play used games, or has to be connected online and haven't heard that's not like that.

He predicts it will finish second this gen behind Splatoon.

HAHAH you got me!

mmm, conservative imho.
I'm betting it will end its LTD around 115 millions, especially if VR will give it a boost in terms of "long tail" into the next generation

Price but especially support if Vita, Move etc are anything to go by.

Considering the wide applications of VR, you can see VR media being developed for the PS4 as well. There are already a nice number of games being announced for it and a studio dedicated to it as well. I think VR will get a push beyond vita, a handheld in a shrinking market, and move, a product released after the buzz had died down.

PS4 was being advertised and communicated the best. Xbox was TV, TV and more expensive. PS4 was like 'we are simply offering a gaming console'. And they struck gold. I also think they did an excellent job with their marketing being very big on nostalgia, showing the whole Playstation history et al. As a Playstation gamer since 1996, that really worked out for me after the somewhat alien Ps3 era. I felt they had another Ps1 or 2 on hand which wasn't overly expensive and would deliver.

Xbox had to repair a lot of stuff first while PS4 simply went on selling. The first period pretty much decided which is the de facto console.

Its cool and all, but i dont understand why its still selling so well.

I mean since its launch, nothing really improved in OS or Services aka PSN. Some of the first Party games for my taste are really uninteresting and really dont provide much if you are multiplayer gamer.

I mean XboxOne IMO does it way better at the moment. Monthly OS Updates, we got a completly redesigned and faster UI, BC and the Games with Gold selection is way better too over the month and with BC even better.

Sure its great that its selling well, but i really cant understand it. Sure the Hardware is better. But cmon nobody can deny that Sony is really lazy so far.

Considering their current sales trend and the games to be released in PS4 during 2016 I'd say they may be supply constrained during holiday 2016. They won't need a price drop, I assume they'll wait for 2017. Their gaming division is in a very good shape, but as a whole corporation Sony needs these extra profits.

But we don't know the profit margin for a theoretical PS4 Slim. Not until someone does a BOM teardown. Maybe it's considerably higher and they'd rather take the extra sales.

I'm gonna assume PS5 is gonna be a clusterfuck a la PS3. Company execs never learn.
Now I kinda miss the PS3 and its exotic architecture. I don't think Sony will ever do the same mistakes with PS5 that they did with the PS3, they suffered way too much for that to happen.

I think it's just better for the entire industry if we have simple easy to develop consoles available at a reasonable price point. That's a good business model. There's no need to complicate it.

as you can see above, I'm expecting PS4 to end higher than his projections, but let's not pretend he has no clue, I think that, even if I don't agree with his forecast, there is a theory behind his projections.

For example: PS4 is surely going better than PS3 in the West, but will probably lose 4 millions to PS3 in japan (PS3 ltd is around 11 millions I think, and with the actual sales it will probably be able to reach 6 millions ltd).
We also saw recently that the % of the other Asian markets (where the pS4 is growing compared to the PS3) are still veeeeeeeery lower than Japan)

more importantly, because western markets are way bigger than Japanese one for home consoles, I think that his theory (that could be wrong, of course) is that the main difference between PS3 and PS4 is the trajectory of the sales, and the shortened life cycle. Exaclty because PS4 was better positioned on the market compared to the PS3 (in general terms - price, lineup etc...; in terms of competition - lower costs than the Xone, way better product than the Wii U; and in terms of previous gen offer - PS3 sales were more stagnant than PS2 ones probably because the longer gen that PS360 offered somehow caused a gen fatigue at least for the more enthusiast gamers) we could see a faster penetration but also a shorter "tail", or in other words, a different sinusoid

note, me too I'm expecting higher sales (not around 99/100 millions as he said, but around 115 millions), but I'm open to different opinions, especially if coming from a user that usually sustain his projection with many data analsys.

Only question mark left for Ps4 is VR. They are going to have some hits in software this year more than likely. Uc4 Sfv, FF15, and another big Holiday with very strong 3rd party and Indy support. It's just what is VR going to do?

Sony low projected numbers?
Kinect like boost?
Wii like craze?
Complete flop?

I hear impressions, and I'm only certain it won't be a complete flop, but dunnon where it will fall with so many question marks. I honestly think the writing is on the wall for X1, they will for the duration of the gen, have weak ROTW sales, timid sales throughout the year and strong holidays in U.S and UK. Nintendo I think will have another successful handheld debut, but VR may be the deciding factor whether Ps4 hits 100+ million or stays in the 70-80 by the time the gen comes to a close

Yeah there's a lot of reasons why PS4 is the better choice for most people.
Sony still cares about having other stuff on their console, but they didn't push it because there was no real reason too.
