PlayStation 4 hits 35.9 million sold through to end users

And this was Patient 0.

Only question mark left for Ps4 is VR. They are going to have some hits in software this year more than likely. Uc4 Sfv, FF15, and another big Holiday with very strong 3rd party and Indy support. It's just what is VR going to do?

Sony low projected numbers?
Kinect like boost?
Wii like craze?
Complete flop?
As soon as we see the pricepoint we will be wiser.

I'm gonna assume PS5 is gonna be a clusterfuck a la PS3. Company execs never learn.

Hmm, I'm almost certain that Cerny will head up the project again. Most of what PlayStation doing going forward will integrate into PSNow and build a ubiquitous platform for all things PlayStation. The PS3 suffered from high costs and exotic design. The advances in technology and media delivery has made many of Sony's blunders harder to repeat. Couple that with the hopeful continuation of x86 based development, and you have hope for the future.

For those who were saying PS4 is lacking games and features, this is partly true. You think with close to 40 million people owning one, there would be a deluge of games. I dunno, I feel the same way. Although 2015 really saw forward momentum. The "lack of games", however has been in the back of my mind. It doesn't help there isn't much though in 2016 I am looking forward too.

As far as OS updates/features, cmon really? Sony released tons of updates but just this last one actually included anything good. Most of the features were ones that should have been available at launch though. My biggest beef: They can't include a better media player? I played an album and I couldn't sort by track. It was all alphabetical. No playlist support? We still can't copy media files to the HD and play them? Lame. "It only does everything": well except support DLNA and play media files well.

Oh and PSN broke again.

I hear impressions, and I'm only certain it won't be a complete flop, but dunnon where it will fall with so many question marks. I honestly think the writing is on the wall for X1, they will for the duration of the gen, have weak ROTW sales, timid sales throughout the year and strong holidays in U.S and UK. Nintendo I think will have another successful handheld debut, but VR may be the deciding factor whether Ps4 hits 100+ million or stays in the 70-80 by the time the gen comes to a close

Its an interesting question, may get a little lost in this thread. I think VR will have a very good launch, there are enough VR evangelists and people with deep pockets to drive sales.

VRs big challenge is 2017+, will they get the price to a point where the mass market will buy it and will the software support continue enough past this year.

Another PS3 won't happen again. We won't see such risks going into a gaming console anymore. Alienating developers is a mistake we won't see anymore either. Ps2 was pretty much based on a monopoly strategy and PS3 derived from that initially.

Its much more global now, with a lot of western engineers. The likes of Cerny won't let that happen. If PS5 is going to move less than PS4, its because MS or someone else struck gold. Or gaming is in a different place altogether.

as you can see above, I'm expecting PS4 to end higher than his projections, but let's not pretend he has no clue, I think that, even if I don't agree with his forecast, there is a theory behind his projections.

For example: PS4 is surely going better than PS3 in the West, but will probably lose 4 millions to PS3 in japan (PS3 ltd is around 11 millions I think, and with the actual sales it will probably be able to reach 6 millions ltd).
We also saw recently that the % of the other Asian markets (where the pS4 is growing compared to the PS3) are still veeeeeeeery lower than Japan)

more importantly, because western markets are way bigger than Japanese one for home consoles, I think that his theory (that could be wrong, of course) is that the main difference between PS3 and PS4 is the trajectory of the sales, and the shortened life cycle. Exaclty because PS4 was better positioned on the market compared to the PS3 (in general terms - price, lineup etc...; in terms of competition - lower costs than the Xone, way better product than the Wii U; and in terms of previous gen offer - PS3 sales were more stagnant than PS2 ones probably because the longer gen that PS360 offered somehow caused a gen fatigue at least for the more enthusiast gamers) we could see a faster penetration but also a shorter "tail", or in other words, a different sinusoid

note, me too I'm expecting higher sales (not around 99/100 millions as he said, but around 115 millions), but I'm open to different opinions, especially if coming from a user that usually sustain his projection with many data analsys.

People like to cling on japan way to much.
In the grand schemes of things, I am sorry japan, but that 4, 5 or 6 million will mean little. We are talking about the highest selling console of its generation. We already got confirmation that PS4 sold 1 million in just 2 years in the Middle East, while PS3 never did above half a million in 10 years. That certainty of Japan selling less is definitely already being countered by new markets like eastern Europe(Polish people play their Witcher 3 on PS4), Russia and waht not. PS4 is more popular then PS2, let alone PS3 in Spain and Italy for example.

Off-topic, but I'm playing through Until Dawn for the first time right now and Emily is so hilariously bitchy. I love her.
Agreed. Even my fiance, who is the nicest girl I've ever met, turned to me and said "I don't normally advocate hitting women, but I'll make an exception for Emily".

... And I love her for that so much. She has the best sections of the game too.

Until Dawn definitely made me happy with my PS4 over the holidays.

And you KNOW it!

I think it's very likely that the PS5 will be an "evolution" of the PS4 instead of starting from scratch like most gens.

Why are people still talking about the big exclusives? Why are people wondering why PS4 sells without exclusives?

The answer is really simple: multiplatforms sell consoles, not exclusives. Whoever has the best looking multiplatforms, more eye candy, best power, bigger balls and all that wins. It comes from the PC side of gaming. Everything needs to be best looking, best sounding and pew pew, that way you have the biggest e-peen and the brag rights.

Exclusives sell the console to the fans/core, but multiplatforms bring the casuals to the platform. There are way more casuals these days than core/fan gamers. Yearly franchises are the big money, not your Uncharted Gears of Ratchet & Turismo 7.

Times have changed.

Also grats to Sony. PS4 is probably my favorite console ever. I haven't played this much in years and years. And PS4 doesn't even have any games, still waiting for them!

PS4 does actually have DLNA support now.

Also, just to clarify something else, there are actually far more games out on the PS4 than both of it's console competitors. You could argue that not enough are to your taste, but it's factually incorrect to say it lacks games. Hell, at this point it probably has double the number of games compared to the other consoles.

Long live the king.

Damn tho...that's a ton of consoles. A little over two years in and we are already halfway to where we were in year seven.

There isnt much coming in 2016? What? I dont think we ever had this many games coming out, I cant keep up or play anywhere close to what I buy, which I do because of big discounts on PSN (which is also recent development).

As to the DLNA, there is Plex, which is free and easily the best media server.

I still don't know if I should buy a PS4 or not, ugh.

I can barely keep up with all the PC, 3DS and Wii U releases, and a lot of PS4 games are being ported to PC too.

I guess we are still 1 year away from Slim. We will see what happens in the meantime.

Wut? If 2016 looks weak for you mate, idk what to say.

It is going to be by far the strongest software year of the console, both in terms of multiplatform games and exclusives.

Its cool and all, but i dont understand why its still selling so well.

I mean since its launch, nothing really improved in OS or Services aka PSN. Some of the first Party games for my taste are really uninteresting and really dont provide much if you are multiplayer gamer.

I mean XboxOne IMO does it way better at the moment. Monthly OS Updates, we got a completly redesigned and faster UI, BC and the Games with Gold selection is way better too over the month and with BC even better.

Sure its great that its selling well, but i really cant understand it. Sure the Hardware is better. But cmon nobody can deny that Sony is really lazy so far.

Where are you from? Salt Lake City?

Well, he just quoted me with his opinion as well, nothing of bad. :p

PS3 did 14 million in its 7th year, you expect the PS4 (cheaper, more succesfull, dominant console, Sony more willing to lower price etc.) to do only 9 million in its 7th year? Even if PS5 is coming out that year, which is plausible. PS4 is not going to slow that much down, especially at a price range that even poor families can afford.

14,5m in 2018 would mean it is going back to PS3 level sales. in 3 years, not going to happen.

I expect the PS4 to peak in 2016, and then i expect a decline in 2017 and 2018, but more than the decline, i don't see PS4 selling like it did during 2015. That's why i thing those years will be over 2014, but under 2015.

PS3 / 360 generation was a phenomenal, with those console to increased all years since 2011... i jsut don't see this happen again.

For example, the PS2, even if at the end it got insane legs, it peaked in 2002, and is declined in 2003 and 2004.

But it got a boost in 2005 and 2006. PS2 slim.

I see PS4 to peak during the firsts year like PS2 ( 2016 ) but it won't have a boost in the years to come...

Of course i may be wrong, there are a lot o thing, games, price, PS5 release year...

Are you guys really expecting a date and price for PSVR at CES? I dunno... I think GDC is more likely.

edit: oh wait GDC is in mid-march. Might be a bit late if they indeed launch it in H1 2016.

So? Japane was a very tiny bit of my previous post, and me too my self anticipated that was insignificant compared to the other part of the reasoning
a reasoning I posted against, forecasting higher sales for the console in terms of LTD, but that doesn't mean that I know the truth and that my prediction is the correct one.
the point of my post was that even if I think that PS4 ltd will beat Wii and PS1 ones, there are also factors that could support the theory of a different sinusoid for PS4 sales compared to the previous one, so it's not a lock that PS4 will see the same growth the PS3 saw, exaclty because of...already stated reasons.

this one is better

LOL great
