Guessing you didn't have that much fun with them? I am also concerned it will just sit on my desk after playing with it for a couple weeks.

I don't really understand the need to know the price ahead of being able to pre-order. You'll have months to figure out if you want it or can afford it before it launches. If it was about to start shipping and they hadn't announced the price, that would be weird... but basically they want to be able to announce the price and say 'available for pre-order now' in the same press release...

)I think this really depends more on content than anything. The DK1 and the DK2 were great, but the number of substantial experiences we're relatively thin.

I would've been angrier about this if not for Palmer Luckey's insistence that Oculus Rift pre-orders will not be limited, meaning there's much less time pressure. You might not be in the first shipment, but you will get a Rift if you pre-order, so you can think over your decision after learning what the price is.

Room scale still has a lot of question marks for me... least of all that I don't really have an appropriate space at home... but that said, I figure getting the touch controllers and a second camera and trying out some of those games will let me know if I want to spend whatever HTC and Valve are asking for a Vive, and if it can work inside my house.
Plus, it's always sounded more likely that Vive stuff would also work on the Rift (so long as you have touch) than it does that Oculus exclusive stuff will work on the Vive (though I know there is absolutely a chance there).
I was going to go that route anyways... but I'm sure this sways a lot of people to wait until they can try those things out with their free rift to at least get more a sense of what the Vive *might* be like in their living situation.
You can't buy it yet. By the time you can you will have all the information you need, and you will have time to figure out if you want to buy it or not before launch. Presuming they don't sell out day one (and it sounds reasonable to expect they have plenty ready for launch given what they've been saying) I don't see why you need to figure out whether or not you want to buy one before you can...
Most people like to make an informed purchasing decision. That usually means having an idea of the price before you actually go to a preorder page. Assuming high demand, you won't have much time to make a decision which isn't great.
The result may be lots of phantom preorders with people preordering first and then cancelling later if the original e isn't good for them. That might give oculus a nice big headline number to shout about but I don't think it is a good way to do things.

You won't have to order quickly, there will be plenty of stock I assure you.
Try this: Come up with the maximum cost you're willing to pay right now. Then when you load the page, if the number is higher then don't buy it.

Unless you go right to the pre-order page at 11am tomorrow, you are almost certainly going to see the price somewhere else first... but why does it matter where you see it? Why would people go to the page, see something more expensive than they can afford, but pre-order anyway just because they are at the page? That isn't how it works.
Pretend that they announce the price and release date at 11 am tomorrow but hold off pre-orders for another week. How does that make things better?
They just want to make sure that when they announce the price (and trust me, they will announce it in press releases and you will see it all over the goddamn internet) that people can pre-order already.
If you think the only way to find out what this thing costs tomorrow is to go to the pre-order page... you are very mistaken.

Most definitely. Great software support will definitely make or break frequent use with these VR headsets. It's also why I'm going PSVR route first as an entry-level headset to try and show friends/family. Cause I know damn well the software support will be there and porting from PC to the PSVR seems to be fairly easy based on what I've read so far. And it'll definitely be the most affordable and simple(plug-n-play) solution out of the major 3. It just makes perfect sense for someone who likes to get their feet wet in this VR space and upgrade later on when much better/cheaper PC hardware is available for VR build.

All I can say on that to Oculus's credit, is that software support for their other commercially launched product (the Gear VR) has been good so far. The launch lineup for the Rift looks pretty good, with plenty of games with support pledged in the pipeline.
Wish their store wasn't such ass.

They gave February 1 as deadline for Kickstarters to sign up for their free Rift, so that's my guess on ship date: February 1

You guys gotta stop perpetuating that rumor. I can't take the disappointment if it's not true!
It's bare bones. No search (that I remember off the top my head), no categories besides the default 3 so you end up scrolling through tons of pages, no review/comment section for apps.
It works, but it needs a lot of improvement especially if it starts getting more apps.

I'm really tempted to buy it but having not tried DK1/DK2 it's really down to pricing, I'm not convinced there's actually going to be much out there making use of VR even when Sony enter the market, certainly not enough to justify any sort of huge initial costs anyway. Everything seems to indicate it's not going to be all that cheap though so I may be passing on it until there's more reviews around too.

I hear that. PC VR will also have much more experimental/unpolished/adult software which won't make it to PSVR. I can't wait to experience those too once I've built a beast ass rig with VR in mind late this year or the next. I'm gonna consume all the VR software/experiences I can get my hands on lol.

Honestly, the only reason I can imagine is that the price is going to be very high, and they don't want the lead up to pre-orders being a bunch of negative commentary at how high the price seems. Price the immediate pre-order leads to more impulse buys.

I thought CV1 would make the DK2 prices plummet on eBay but maybe with high cost of entry for CV1 and high computer component cost there may still be a market for the DK2. Wondering if new content will work on it too or if DK2 dead after CV1 launch.
I had fun with DK1 and 2 and showed them off to quite a few people, but content was thin and its a bit of a pain to setup with my racing chair. All I really want is a sick music visualizer I can live in for a couple hours to chill out late at night.

Yep, I think there will be no issue. These price-antsy folks should settle down, we'll know tomorrow morning at the latest and you'll be ok if you don't find out before then. If you need time to think about it, then take the time once you know. It'll be fine.

"An informed purchasing decision" means not making a pre-order in the first place and wait until a few weeks afer the devices are out in the market, then read reviews, opinions, feedback and choose for yourself.

Well, as they did with backers getting free CV1's they could be very well underpromising and overdelivering for maximum customer satisfaction. But who knows, I just hope I can get my hands on it as soon as possible.
It's more like 7500 or so. Only DK1 Kickstarter backers are getting a unit for free.

It's weird, certainly. If you just use the app without the Gear VR on it's a lot better. More categories for one. I'm sure they'll improve it over time, and I'm sure the CV1 will launch with a better store... at least I hope so! It's something I should have mentioned anyways, so I'm glad you did. The store is jank, yes. What's in it is pretty good. That it could already do with a search function is a good sign for support in a weird way.

Well, if the Kickstarter addresses have to be updated by early February and are meant to be amongst the first to ship... you can still dream... at least until tomorrow morning.
If I have it by my birthday on the 26th of March, I'll be very happy. If I don't get it until very early April, I'll live.

I had a DK1 and it was really only used to show it off to a new person. I honestly didn't use it for any prolonged period of time. I tried a few games with it but never came back to a single one. With all that being said, I still want to buy this. Why.

Probably because there wasn't any real content for the dev kits aside from tech demos and underdeveloped indies. The few real games with any kind of support were usually a bitch to get working right.
This will be different. It will be a much more polished user experience with a lot more polished content to actually dive into.

I was originally more interested in the Vive but HTC just constantly shows that it doesn't know how to treat its customers AND they are far from a healthy company. At least Oculus should make it to next gen of VR headsets. Too bad. I'm sure their headset will be great though but they lost me.
