Sonic 06 is 10 Years Old this Year

This game sucks.

Honestly, this was one of the first games I was actively following in development. I was so hyped for a next-gen Sonic the Hedgehog. I was impressed by the graphics, the gameplay, the new character, Blaze not being in a handheld game and even Shadow returning. I'm not lying when I say that this game sold me on an Xbox 360. Yeah I was really dumb back then.

The problem is that it's unfinished. There is zero polish to this game. It's buggy, janky, slow, and succumbs to some really stupid hangups. Super Mario Galaxy came out around the same time on less powerful hardware and looks and plays a thousand times better than this. It's really hard for me to describe in words how this game feels besides "not good" you really have to see it for yourselves.

There are some other big problems with the game. There are too many characters, the art direction is awful, they screwed up the design of Eggman big time, the load times are atrocious, and the music is weak compared to the rest of the series.

To me this is the low point of the series. I know recent games are also disliked but Lost World "got" Sonic more with its cartoony artstyle and light-hearted story, and Boom was just a bad idea coming and I saw that coming from a mile away.

I could go into a lot more. If you want to know why this game is disliked so much this review will do the job for you.

Man I just can't believe this game is 10 years old now. What are your memories of the game?

Edit: Oh god I forgot to mention there's bestiality in this game. I'm not joking. There's a love story between a human and an anthropomorphic animal that culminates in a kiss between the two. Uggh that really turned me off the game.

My brother got into the first boss fight with Silver and kept getting thrown against the wall and a ring kept flying back into Sonic, so it was an inescapable endless loop of getting grabbed locked. I laughed my ass off and neither of us played the game since then.

I remember seeing it demoed in stores early last generation. I was eager to get a machine that could play it. Eventually I realized how much it sucked.

Alright, I think this is officially the time to call it on Anniversary threads. Already ridiculous 5 days into the year.

Why was it just named, Sonic the Hedgehog?

Was it supposed to be some kind of reboot, but ended up being crap?

This game is an utter classic, pure gold condensed into a single disk :D!

To be serious, the game is so-bad-its-good to me personally; the level design has its moments, the music is amazing and Sonic & Blaze can be fun to play as at points. The game is a complete mess and its, um....'story' is quite something.

It was a great wake-up call that Sonic Team really needed to re-focus Sonic for future games and its good to see the series improve over time :).

You have to start from the lowest point to get to get better.

It's probably the only game I've ever completed out of spite. Despite everything I actually kind of enjoyed Silver's stuff? It was the least broken section of the whole game.

I actually bought a copy for a few quid quite recently.

It's bad.

Like, really bad.

It's not the worst game ever, but it's bad to the point of being funny.

Like, loops having no gravity meaning you can just stand upside down.... how nothing works as it should..... how that Shadow fight is so badly designed....

This game gets a lot of flack but I don't truly understand why.

The story sucks in many ways.
It's full of glitches.
The graphics are mediocre even for the time.
Loading times are awful.

But honestly? It's just mediocre and a far cry from terrible. It's like semi-playable shovelware but with a big name attached. There are far, far worse games out there. There's actually some fun to be had in this game from exploiting the glitches.

This was one of the early games that started my doubt for the games media. A lot of them were beyond normal levels of hype for this game and it turned out to be a turd. Before then I realized that certain sites might not be for me and the like but after this game I never really trusted any games media again before ditching it all together after GTA IV came out and ruined it forever.

It's crazy how this game is still relevant

It was a recognised IP and massively hyped. One of the first "next gen" (at the time) TV ads I remember seeing "Welcome to the Sonic Age".... but it's one of the most disappointing games in existence because it came off the back of Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 (for the record, those games are not as bad but still pretty shitty, I can't understand why anyone holds them in any sort of regard) which fans of the series enjoyed and it had a really amazing look to transform Sonic into HD for the first time.... then it bombed.

i remember liking the demo
then again i was 11
The demo was better than the final game, because it only consisted of a reasonably-sized Sonic portion without a highspeed section. Still have it on my 360.

I've finally completed Sonic 2006 in 2014 (meaning all Achievements) and had it since a week before release (review copy). I was super pumped for it and was incredibly let down when I finally got to play it. It was one of two reasons for me to buy a 360 at launch (the other being Kameo, which was worth it) and I was never let down this much. It certainly beats my disappointment with Yoshi's Story, which was my biggest one up until then.

The worst game I've ever played. I remember getting it for $20 right after I got my PS3 and thinking "what the fuck is this". I've never played a game where I felt less in control, where every moment was just like…ugh. Then there's the whole beastiality shit that someone thought wasn't the worst possible idea for a sonic game. A perfect example of how to fuck up in every way really.

The game actually has one good level and one of the best 3D Sonic ones.

Crisis City

Tornado mach section at the end with WOW THAT TORNADO'S CARRYING A CAR begs to differ.

All of Sonic '06's levels are all sorts of god awful. Even if they weren't glitchy or awkwardly split up by loading times, there's still a ton of bullshit level design like enemy bridges over bottomless pits, ring trails also over bottomless pits (I think there's a section in Kingdom Valley that does this and the ring dash is mapped to the same button as the downward bounce thing and oh my god it is TERRIBLE).

Crisis City in Generations level-design wise seems to ignore a lot of what was in the original level beyond a few moments and it's all the better for it. No clue why people feel the need to make excuses for the game when even SEGA seems to want you to forget about it.

Don't play Sonic Boom. :P

Most of the issues with Sonic 2006 were not really apparant before release. Games media did pan the final game though, rightfully. Not to say you can trust games media because of this, for other Sonic games they proved to be clueless, but reporting positively about an upcomming game and then negatively when it releases because it turned out shit despite good ambitions is fine imo.

I don't understand why:

Proceeds to list a bunch of reasons why.

Me and a buddy played through a few Silver levels a while back. It was simultaneously one of the most hilarious and painful things ever.

If I had a friend who was willing to endure it with me I'd play through to the very end just for the experience.

You're still crazy for liking this game
:P

Ah this game...too be fair, after watching several playthroughs, LPs, and commentaries of this game some levels have some decent level design. Parts of Kingdom Valley, Crisis City, and Radical Train all have some interest level design that if the game had polish it wouldn't be as much of a disaster.

Speaking of playthroughs, here are some others I've watched that are hilarious:

PokeCapn Playthrough (aka the most famous err....infamous?
Game Grumps Playthrough (UNFINISHED T_T)
HellfireComms Playthrough
Brainscratch Comms playthrough
SomecallmeJohnny Playthrough w/Multiplayer, Amigo levels and Super Hard Mode

This dude is pretty much our savior. Gistix and team are porting/recrating Sonic 06 to PC using Unity engine. They plan implementing some fixes and things that were in the beta while using the new engine to improve the looks a bit graphically.

Surprised no one ever made a thread towards it. Guess this game sucked that hard for many folks.

I liked how the control was greatly improved; the wall running bit looked great and I like how Sonic kept momentum after jumping (hitting a speed-panel and jumping in the air) like the Adventure games.

Will keep my eye on this, so thank you for the heads up :). No one made a thread due to many hating Sonic on Gaf (or at least it appears to be that way), so the thread would be de-railed with people dissing on the series or saying how 06 is a shitty game (which it is).

OP, props for linking the Clement review. It is pretty much the analysis of this game, like what the Plinkett reviews are to the Star Wars prequels. If you want to be educated and entertained at the same time, give it a watch.
