Sonic 06 is 10 Years Old this Year

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Sonic 2006 did more for the world as a terrible game than it would have as a mediocre-to-good one.

It is so bad that people have literally donated to charity to watch people stream it. It made Sonic Team reconsider what the fuck they were doing. It finally put a line in the sand for Sonic story where the world just went "Yep, that's too far, pull it all the fucking way back."

Honestly, it's not really that much different from the Sonic Adventure games. Just as janky, just as glitchy.
Eh, its a lot different. If you want me to go into it.

It made Sonic Team reconsider what the fuck they were doing. It finally put a line in the sand for Sonic story where the world just went "Yep, that's too far, pull it all the fucking way back."
This backfired...alot actually.

Sonic Adventure and its sequel haven't aged well, but I'd gladly replay them a million times over Sonic '06.

The similarities in design are definitely there, but I can still play the Dreamcast games (somewhat) comfortably, even if they're still janky. Unlike '06 there's still passion behind what's there as well, even if it doesn't necessarily work.

Yeah this game was trash. There was a YouTube video many years ago (I think around 10-11 minutes long) that literally had "why Sonic 06 is a bad game" or something like that. So many glitches that the game to me looked unfinished.

I played this game on my friend's 360 after I watched that video and the uploader wasn't kidding - it sucks. Oh and the load times are extremely bad, no idea why.

GAFer Sega1991's video, Sonic the Hedgehog is a bad game, and here's why

Sonic Team: Next game

Only because they didn't want to release a AAA-Budget 3-5 hour game is why we got the Werehog. Otherwise it would of been normal Sonic stages and nothing more.

Consider Colors and Generations, with both games being composed of largely Sonic levels (Colors having 2 main acts, four side acts) and in the case of Generations, re-using the Modern Level assets for Classic Sonic levels and gameplay.

Making a game using the Modern formula is very expensive, so that was why they tried something new with Lost World and while that backfired, they have more then enough time to make a Modern-focused game that has a lot of levels.

Consider that the Generations team has been working on something since the release of Generations (2011-2016). That is a very long time to make a sonic game and Lost World finished development in 2013-Early 2014 (Nintendo DLC) so its very likely we got one Sonic with four-five year development cycle and another one that got 2-3 years development cycle. The next Sonic will have a lot of content to the point we won't need a gimmick to extend game length :).

Hey, at least Unleashed had (some) moments of merit and was (somewhat) competently put together. The day levels were fun and made even better in Generations, and the night levels were... playable. Not good, but better than anything in 06 that's for sure.

Hey man, don't fall into the cycle! Get out while you can brother. I played the SHIT out of Generations (I was the top 5th City Escape classic player at one point... yea) and have been a complete freak for the franchise since Sonic Adventure 2 warped my elementary-age mind, but I'm done! I'd advise you cut the money and run while you still have the chance.

Generations was good, no, it was actually a great game! I don't think we're getting anything quite like it for a while. I'd actually be surprised to see a new "traditional" Sonic come out for modern consoles as well. Sonic Boom seems to be making em a decent amount of cash, so I feel as though the series will remain dormant outside of that for a while. Not forever, but I think that it's in SEGA's best interest to wait a bit for people to... want a Sonic game, I suppose, before they start pumping out shovelware again. They really need to rethink this franchise if it's going to be accepted as quality again.

Oh wow, it's been 10 years? It feels like time just flew by! Put me in the "Was actually hype for it pre-release" boat; this game almost pushed me toward a PS3 5 years prior to me actually getting one. ... Which would've ultimately be a good thing, actually.

You're still crazy for liking this game
:P

Ah this game...too be fair, after watching several playthroughs, LPs, and commentaries of this game some levels have some decent level design. Parts of Kingdom Valley, Crisis City, and Radical Train all have some interest level design that if the game had polish it wouldn't be as much of a disaster.

Speaking of playthroughs, here are some others I've watched that are hilarious:

Don't forget Retsupurae's! Theirs was pretty great, too. They breeze through most of the more infamous parts, though; their biggest problems were
forgetting to save and Slowbeef's PS3 breaking
. Now that Jon & Arin are on
"showing up in the other's videos"
terms again, I wonder how long it'll be until the inevitable finale of their run?

I will be replaying this gem of a game again later this year, can't wait for the frustrating Silver sections.

It's a shame the game was so bad because the music is fantastic!

I'm so fucking old now.
Yep...

I used to work as a camp counselor during my high school summers. At the camp I wore a fucking Sonic hat! It was blue and had his face on it. One of the campers there became obsessed with me for it. I worked there for 4 years, and on the last day of my last year there, as he was walking to his bus after we said goodbye I just like... shouted to him. "Want it? Catch." He caught it. "Wow! Cool..."

I shit you not. It was like a coming of age experience.

I think it's time to let sonic die. It's been 10 years of mediocrity(probably more) highlighted by the recent absolutely terrible sonic boom. The series does nothing great, does no one feature better than any other game. There is no reason for it to exist right now, and to be honest, if ever after the first game.

To much points to something huge happening for Sonic this year and Boom isn't a part of it (though Sticks is playable in the new Mario & Sonic alongside Fire & Ice coming out this year).

Rumors of a new Sonic Team game have been rumbling for a while now, marketing for the anniversary has been largely Classic Sonic focused and the Generations Team and Colors Team have had a lot of time for make new projects using the Sonic IP. Now is a good time to be excited about the series again and even though I know that the chance for a great game might not be as high as I'm hoping....it feels nice to care about the series again.

For the past four years, I gave two shits about the series due to not owning Nintendo systems to play the new games. And....it bite. I love the series and Generations alongside Sonic Racing Transformed were a blast to play. I've been waiting to play a good Sonic game for a while now and with something coming out this year on consoles I know I will be getting (PS4), I have every right to be excited about the series this year :).

A bit extreme don't you think? Especially for sonic 2 and 3(& knuckles)

Coincidentally, it's been 10+ years that Sonic has been "dead", and 5+ years since the notion that "Sonic games were never good" was born.

Well, there it is.

There's always at least one.

Oh yeah, I've heard about that one! I might have to check it out, JUST for the 25th anniversary :P

While everyone is wishing for an Unleashed or Colors PC port, I'll be here secretly wishing for 06 to have a PC port as well.

It's the most "so bad it's good" game I can think of.

For 2006 that's false. They were quite decent, except maybe the human character models.

Even back then, the only thing I found to be visually good were the CGI cutscenes (which still hold up today).

Animations, facial expressions, effects, and lighting all looked very poor during gameplay and in in-engine cutscenes.

So I take it that Sonic's love child with a human is 10 years old now.

Edit: Make that 9. I forgot the pregnancy year.

I would like to post my personal favorite sonic 06 LP. The channel Retsuprae made a name for themselves doing mst3k style videos on bad LPs but they usually don't do LPs on the channel. What is so special about this LP is how genuine everything is. They had no clue about the game going into it besides it being considered bad so their responses are natural. (Their reaction hearing All Hail Shadow is easily one of the highlights) It's a long LP but worth checking out. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fED2EeaTVCM

This dude is pretty much our savior. Gistix and team are porting/recrating Sonic 06 to PC using Unity engine. They plan implementing some fixes and things that were in the beta while using the new engine to improve the looks a bit graphically.

Surprised no one ever made a thread towards it. Guess this game sucked that hard for many folks.

I'm interested to see how much better this would be if they finish it and do fix a lot of major issues.

I feel like the problems could run deeper than bugs. Not to say the game is unsalvageable, but if it actually stayed in development until it was ready I'd imagine there'd be some design iteration.

Game Grumps' Sonic The Hedgehog play is a legend, and yet it ended pre-maturely when Jon and Arin split, so even in giving us something great it still enrages me. Fuck Sonic '06.

Girlfriend and I played through this game last year and had a hell of a time.
Fully intend to play it again this year too.

it was one of the first games I had received with my 360 for Christmas, fun times...
even fully completely what the game had to offer lol
Same here. 1000G on this game. Everybody say it sucks, but I had a lot of fun with it.

The only good thing from this game is the music. It's amazing!!

Even if the bugs are fixed, the gameplay is still horrible. I replayed Generations not long ago, and there's a huge difference in mechanics' quality between 06 and Generations.

Did your parents never tell you about the hedgehogs and the hornets? The princess only kissed Sonic. They still gotta do the nasty in this year's sequel, Sonic 2016.
