Oculus Rift available for preorder for $599.99, shipping in March

Well considering orders are already pushed back to May, I would say that people are buying this
Sure I don't think anyone doubted there'd be early adopters, but you can't make any conclusions as to how many are actually being sold because orders are being pushed back. We really have no idea about manufacturing yields and quantities and any inventory builds etc.

So hopefully for Oculus it's enough early adopters to allow for more mass market penetration or it's at least going to look bad for the near term

At this point I'll probably just wait for the 2nd iteration of PSVR. Poor move by Oculus, although they may not have had a choice with how expensive the tech still is.

Just ordered mine, £530 delivered here in the UK. They dont take the money until it ships so i can always change my mind and cancel which is nice.

BUT people who think the PSVR will be $400 are living in a dream world!!!!!!

Unless Sony sells it at a deficit.

Doom and gloom.

A lot of companies do that.
Cheap marketing strategy.

I was sitting here with my credit card, hitting F5 to buy. I have a DK2. I haven't ordered.

€742 to order it is crazy. I paid half that for the DK2. It doesn't even come with the Touch controllers. How much extra are they going to be?

Yeah, i've been waiting for VR for the last 3 years, feverishly, and for 740€ it's just an absurd price to pay, for what content is there and considering in 2 years there'll probably be a better version out.

You can get a 970 or equivalent for around $300 now, which is the baseline for the rift.

I would want to go with a 6GB and mot 4GB card as I regret going 2GB with my 670. I hit texture memory limits way sooner than I would have liked.

Edit: I wast thinking 980, my bad. Yeah 970 is 300-400 range. Still going to wait for impressions...most importantly in iRacing and DiRT

They really should have held some sort of press conference instead of just dumping it on the website and letting people go wild with this.

Being honest, everyone getting a Rift right now is a hero. VR will live or die within the first 2 years and early adopters will determine it.

Seriously, has everyone got an e-mail confirmation? My order went through 15 minutes after preorders opened, but I still haven't got one :/

So I never got the confirmation page but it shows o preordered under orders and doesn't let me preorder another one. I got no email, no ship date nothing.

What do I do, just wait and hope?

Guess I'll be waiting for PlayStation VR. Is $400 too hopeful for a current-gen console version of the tech? I imagine Sony are aware of the potential marketing and perception advantages that these circumstances have presented to them. $500 seems like the ceiling at this point. I hope.

Even still, I can't argue too much with the price. I haven't experienced the latest VR tech, but still... this is literally virtual fucking reality.

What the fuck it's 699€ here, they're insane.

Worst part being that it's already obsolete and you'll need the new revision next year. Lol.

I am starting to understand why some people think only Sony can lead the VR way. Clunky and not optimal but the only ones that can actually bring it to a large audience.

Over 400 euros though and I doubt anybody would. It's still really expensive. 300 would be the right entry point, they said they will lose money on it.

There will probably be only one PSVR in the PS4 life span. You are looking at 2020 at the earliest for the second iteration.

An article on HDTV in 1998.

Doomed.

DVD players were $1000 when they launched.

It's what you pay for adopting a new tech early.

This won't be the one the mass market will embrace. No one is expecting that.

I can remember not even thinking I would be able to own a plasma TV because of how much they were when they first came out. Something like $5,000 for the smallest ones.

The price will come down. As an early adopter of most consoles, I know we pay so future iterations can be more cheaply manufactured.

Did you just place that preorder, or did you get an order through right at zero minute?

I got in right away and got to the final screen early while it was showing March, but every attempt at finalizing payment failed with a generic error message until another ~30 minutes or so passed. During that time of attempting over and over again, the finalization page changed to show April instead of March, but when the order finally went through I got March after all, possibly because I was held earlier in the queue due to getting to the final step quickly.

This is why the prices on these things weren't announced any earlier. $599 is a high barrier of entry combine that with supply constraints and limited software, do not buy an Oculus Rift at launch.

No, lol. Taxes vary per state. It can range from 6% to almost 10%. Some states have no sales tax as well.

More than likely some people will not be paying taxes on this if bought directly from Oculus, since online can only be taxed in states that have a distribution center.

I was joking^^ I know that the US has very low taxes. With taxes that would be 650$ if we take 10%. Let's say 670$ with shipping. That 625€. Hmm...

The fact that Oculus is apparently charing over 750€ (some say even 800-900€ :/) is just ... disgusting.

*shrug*

Whatever wording you choose to use, the Oculus is objectively a better device. How much that matters to a person is utterly subjective.

Maybe, but i don't see the better games right now. And that's what matters the most for people!

The market for consoles is significantly larger than VR headsets. Also, the PS4 was launch ed at a small profit not a loss. MS screwed themselves with the pack-in of the Kinect pricing-wise.

I expect that Sony has already run the numbers and expects to sell X amount at $500 and Y amount at $400. Does the difference between X and Y make up for the revenue shortfall? If you price at $400 and you lose money on every sale you are in trouble because the licensing fees will not be large enough to make up for the loss however small it may be. The number of units sold will be too small to make up for it. A lot of people that will buy at $400 will also buy at $500 because that's what early adopters do.

This isn't like a console where you expect to sell 80 million and make licensing fees on game sales. The market is exponentially smaller. You price the base product at a level where you aren't already in the hole.
But if you don't have the install base quickly developers are not going to develop for it and once development starts to dry up its hard to put it back on track. So I m sure Sony will not want to make it a failure

Doom and gloom.

That would mean something if we knew what the amount of Day 1 stock there was. Posting shit like this (not against you Split) is just click bait kind of shit. If they said, we have 100,000 units that will ship day 1 and then said those sold in xx amount of time, at least there would be a reference to go by.

And to think that price is without the touch controllers lol.

This should help people put Vive's price into perspective. Vive ships with its controllers and two mounted cameras. Damn Vive is going to be like $899 at minimum.

I'm calling it now.

PSVR $399

In line with my predictions, but that's probably the highest point for the top SKU. I'm calling $299-399 for a value-added box (camera and "PSVR Move(s)"), while standalone PSVR should be $199-$299 for those of us who have cameras.

The coming weeks should be intersting. I say "weeks" instead of "months" because I think this $599 confirmation is going to push Sony to announce a price sooner than expected. I'm liking a $249/$349 (standalone/bundle) and $599-649 PS4+PSVR bundle. Assuming a PS4 pricedrop by then too. ;)

This meltdown right now is funny to me. I'll enjoy that meltdown as well. I can tell there are many young ones on the board who had a lot of hopes and dreams...seeing it being shattered to the realities of the world...priceless. :)

It's sad you take pleasure in the displeasure of others. Probably have a lot of emotional issues/baggage.
