Oculus Rift available for preorder for $599.99, shipping in March

I haven't been following Rift development, but I assume that there are plenty of existing games than can be retro-enabled to work with it, right? I keep seeing people say "3 software titles only" etc. Who is right?

I think there are quite a few VR games right now on dk1 and 2 that can be fitted to work with this version

Alien Isolation has non native support but I wouldn't be surprised to see it get retrofitted as well, either officially or unofficially.

Theres 2 official free games with preorders but I guarantee there will be a ton more on day 1

You don't need a $1000-1500 computer with specific parts to use an iPad for two fucking games.

Theres more than 2 fucking games, come on dude.

while goofy, I dont necessarily disagree

I dont think I posted about VR in any real capacity outside of "jeff gerstman liked the PS VR headset" but I was all in on getting a preorder done today

Dual HD screens and a new piece of tech. I guessed $700. I'm glad it's $600.

Why were people thinking less when a freaking new smart phone costs $500-$800.

Smartphones can make calls, surf the Internet, use apps without extra hardware. I can't use my Oculus Rift to get an Uber when I'm stumbling drunk out of a bar.

Hahaha wow! Oh the schadenfreude. No way in hell this sees mass market adoption with a price that high. You even need to pay out the ass for a computer to run the damn thing on top of this?!?! What the hell were they thinking? Yikes.

I know when I buy a new smartphone that there will be plenty uses for it. We don't know what will be available for this.

I agree with that. I'm just thinking in terms what these would cost to manufacture, not whether or not it's a good decision to buy one.

Judging by how the ship date is going up, they're not setting up a manufacturing chain for mass market adoption. They know what they're doing, they just haven't communicated it well enough.

Never had any interest in this gimmick, this basically makes sure other people join my corner. €700 is riduculous, they must be making sure this device stays within the tech addict niche.

Expected ship date: May 2016

hmm. clearly theres a market for it right now

They're obviously only shipping 10 per month to make it seeeeeeem like it's selling well.

/s
Seems to be out of the realm of mainstream pricing, but still selling well. These aren't mutually exclusive.

Is the price of this expected to be low just because it's related to gaming? Think about how insane the $500 price tag of the ipad seemed at the time

Of course the price will come down, if the market sustains until that point. All of the things you listed were niche when they first released, but the benefits of them all were easily understood, so the market accepted them, allowing the price to drop. VR cannot be directly compared. They needed to come out with a low entry price for market penetration, and they out priced themselves for that.

People were extremely hesitant to make the switch to HD for the longest time. They didn't see the point of making the switch from their current tech that worked perfectly fine. I worked in a video store and heard that into the early 2000s. People hated it when we started making the switch to DVD. No one saw the need for it.

Now I don't think VR is a lock to be a success and I definitely think it will take a few years if that's going to happen but I wouldn't be dismissing the technology wholesale based on the price we see today. That's what a few people in here are doing.

I can understand people not wanting to pay this price right now but suggesting VR is doomed based on it seems a little silly.

We won't know until the price comes down whether or not the mass market takes to it.

woooooof. something tells me PSVR is going to cost more than a PS4 if this thing is $599.

IDK. Sony tends to be ok selling at cost. I firmly believe Sony will come in at $399. Anything more and it is a non starter* for main stream consumers. I think Oculus is over playing there hand here and let the social media "I love Rift" nonsense cloud their judgment. But lets see where the chips land come holiday season.

*Unless you have a legit killer app... which no VR platform has yet

I'd check the order number itself. Mine said March on the final purchase page, but when I checked the order number on the site, it said April and I was sad.

Your order on the site has the expected ship month? I'm convinced my order is fucked. I can view it. The name, address and card info are correct but there is nothing but -- for price and I have no expected ship month. When I placed the order it said April on the screen but I have yet to receive an official confirmation email.

This generation of HMD's are not really targeted at mass adoption, not for years atleast

I can't understand why some think that this was coming in at $299 or so. That's crazy cheap. PSVR is coming it at the same price as a console and, power-wise, isn't near Oculus.

The fact is that Oculus will be the top of the range VR model and will have the price to match it, but it'll be able to do stuff that PSVR simply won't be capable of.

That said, Sony have a real opportunity here. If they go for $399 or below, they will become "the people's VR" i.e. the entry level VR that really pushes the medium into the mainstream.

Why? Because Oculus said that it will cost around the same as DK2. And because the differences between DK2 and CV1 are pretty small. Basically just better screen and some design differences.

New technologies like this depend on content support, but Blu-Ray and flat screen televisions aren't the same. There's a MASSIVE difference in cost and labor between what it takes for a studio to release their films in a new resolution, compared to a developer going through a 1-3 year development cycle to create a game that can only be played on VR peripherals. A studio can support a new format with little or no repercussions due to the fact that the same television show or movie can still be sold in traditional formats.

You are absolutely right that experiences designed from the ground-up for VR have a major business concern with adoption rates. VR isn't going to have that many users at first and so we will see those sorts of games (1) fetch a premium price or (2) utilize cheaper development strategies to offset the small market segment.

That said, we also need to consider games and entertainment experiences that are built (or modified) to support traditional display and also VR. Businesses can be profitable while supporting both markets. As an example, The Long Dark (really great game btw!) plans to support VR displays but also works fine on a regular monitor/TV. I'd imagine that TLD will translate very well to VR and can keep players immersed despite its development as a traditional game. Will VR require more development resources for the engine / UI / bugs / etc.? Sure, but it won't be as expensive as building from scratch.

VR display won't work well for every sort of game of course, but I'm sure there are great VR experiences that can be developed without sacrificing the economics side of the equation.

Yikes.

Firmly apply the brakes my man.

lol thanks, I am of 2 minds here until I have confirmation.

Here's my estimated breakdown of the bundle cost if it DOES cost $781 AUD

$79 - Xbox One Controller
$35 - Xbox Wireless Adapter
$100 - Tracking Camera
$39 - Oculus Remote
$69 - Eve Valkyrie
$39 - Lucky's Tale
$300 - Oculus Rift
$120 - Shipping

= $781

That seems reasonable BUT only if that really IS in AUD and NOT USD.

Why's it even bundled with the controller? Some won't even want it, and others either already have one or could've always bought separately.

I just don't get why the reaction is this huge. It may be more expensive than you thought but there has been almost no news stating anything other than VR is going to cost you a lot. I can only imagine the reaction if people weren't out there saying how VR was going to be expensive.

Too expensive. But then again, so is an iPhone.

If people see the value they will still be interested despite some not being able to afdord for now.

we dont know how many units they have in stock. Ofcourse there are people paying $600. Its a high price but not out of this world high. The question isnt if the people on day one bought it but how many people will buy it from now till month/ year X. You can have a great start and still fail if the mainstream doesnt agree with the price.

I don't understand? Looks like they've already sold out a couple of shipments worth so they're at the very least within sales expectations I would imagine.

Of course it's "selling out" you don't have to pay yet. I think the price is fucking stupid, but I even put in a preorder cause I can cancel if they don't follow through with better news.

Didn't Mark Zuckerberg make a big deal about selling these at cost to create a market? Seems a bit steep, although I admittedly have no insight into the cost of making the device.

It's not out of the question for me in terms of price, although I want a killer app before I take the plunge.

I'm not sure where all the doom is coming from in this thread. Company starts selling product for X price, tons of people are buying the product at X price, NeoGAF: "Wow this company is fucking doomed"

Right? $600 for a new hot tech item isn't really high at all.

That means the Rift might not be a great value to you, hell it isn't to me either at that price, but that is irrelevant to the discussion of why this thing is so expensive. It's expensive because the technology behind it is still very expensive. Oculus are selling this to the hardcore community first. There isn't a reasonable price at which the casual gamer would have jumped in on this, so why try and lure them in right now? You think casual gamers/consumers are sitting around with $1200 PCs hoping for a $200 VR headset?
