Oculus Rift available for preorder for $599.99, shipping in March

Yeah, I'll be waiting, don't have money.

It's good that they didn't compromise so much though.

Really curious how much they're intending to ship this year, not to mention at launch.

Reactions like this (though granted, are kind of few) are just stupid. You really have no clue about emergent technology, your anecdote means absolutely nothing and it would seem that you're happy it fails.

Yup, because emergent tech really depends solely on initial price point. History proves this point

The first iterations of :

  • TV
  • Computer
  • Cell phone
  • HDTV
  • printer
  • 3D printer
  • etc..

were all DOA.

I'm not saying VR won't suceed, or that later version of the OR will. But 600$ fucking dollars + not that many VR ready (good) games + 1000$ PC.

This hit of realism just made me change my initial prediction of PSVR's price from $99-$149 to at least $249-$299.

You were never even in the ballpark to begin with and I'd say you are still low.

You really thought that PSVR would launch at a price point near the Kinect? It would cost you that much just for the two Move controllers and the camera.

I mean, the PS3 did somewhat well at 600 bucks.....but this is just stupid :l.

If you want VR to really take off, you have to make it affordable, 600 isn't pocket change :(.

My bet is that they are hinging support from high-end PC gamers with a lot of money with initial release of Oculus Rift sets, then over time low the price to attract more casual PC gamers.

They are having a few things bundled with the Rift (some games, dev tools, ect) I think, so it isn't a complete waste for 600 bucks.

It's not just the price of the Rift, but how many people are going to be able to use it with the specs that it requires right now? And what market are they really going for?

If it's for niche power users, they'll probably do fine there. Is that enough to establish a viable business model on? I don't think it is... But I guess we'll find out.

And all of them are guaranteed to work with PSVR. No compatibility checks required. You'll also know that all PSVR games will be specifically designed to run on that hardware. You are not going to run into cases like on the PC where specific games could require a higher than minimum spec. If PSVR is priced as expected in the $349-$449 range then it really will be the best bet for most people to try out VR. In a year or so when VR PC prices come down and software library expands, you could get it then if you are still interested.

This is basically my plan. I'm thinking about ordering an OC just to scalp it. Lol But I'll get a PSVR to play for a couple years while I wait for OC/Vive v2.0 or 3.0. Hehe

Don't understand when I have a gtx 960 and a i5 4590 I can't run VR. Yet the PS4 can... Super confused!! I could afford this as well, but I'm not forking out for a new graphics card as well!

This is running a high-resolution screen and asking for a high framerate for the brain to become immersed in the illusion.

Obviously, that's impossible with the current state of the PS4's hardware, they are going low resolution and low framerate, using interpolation to achieve higher framerate on the unit.

I guess people just really believed this...

We set out to change all that with the Rift, which is designed to maximize immersion, comfort, and pure, uninhibited fun, at a price everyone can afford.

And we’re confident we can make the consumer version even more impressive, all without increasing price or sacrificing an ounce of quality.

From the original Kickstarter campaign, i know things change, but don't blame people for being surprised or disappointed at the 599.99 + high end pc

Whilst the price is quite a bit higher than I wanted and expected them to go for, I don't think it's that unreasonable for what it is. I paid £680 for a high end gaming monitor, this is:

- A head mounted display
- With lots of (presumably) good sensors
- With a camera
- With headphones
- With an Xbox One controller
- With two games
- With a remote
- With a (what appears to be) a fairly hefty case

For £180 less than my monitor (without shipping). Not saying they're directly comparable, but either way I'm paying a premium for a high end visual experience.

While I agree, I don't see why I am forced to buy headphones and the controller with the rift. I alredy have a good pair and several Xbox One controllers. Just wasted money imo.

The price I expected. and it's a fair price. Keep in mind of the items it comes with, and that they can't sell this thing at a loss like sony can. Also expecting their production costs are higher than Sony or HTC would be.

Hoping the big 3 in VR succeed. its what the industry needs.

Also sucks coming out first with a price for "new" tech.

Now I pray that PSVR is $350 or below :\

If its more then 300 bucks, it will bomb hard at retail unless they have a very impressive launch for the device and do the following:
-Push it everywhere and give consumers a chance to use PS VR at Demo Stations like the PS4
-Release a killer launch line up and pitch it as 'another TV' sorta like how they pitched remote play to people
-Have it be bundled with 2-3 games (No Mans Sky, RIGS, Dream Beta, ect)

Well that's out of my price range. We'll see how it goes.

PSVR will likely be as expensive, unless its produced as cheap as possible.

My specs are fine, just curious about whether or not they are going to tell me my USB 3.0 ports aren't compatible.

Running an OC'd 4770k and 970 (will upgrade to newest Nvidia card when they are released).

For anyone looking for the system checker, just go to https://shop.oculus.com/en-us/cart/ and it is right above the product listing. I missed it earlier because I ordered before reading anything (hooray for March).

Still never got my order confirmation after an hourish :/ I can look up my order number, but the page is pretty barebones.

What do other people's order status pages look like? Seems like mine should have the intended delivery month on it.

Whats funny is, PS VR is going to be around the same price. I don't see how people are thinking that it won't be. It comes with its own mini processing box, move controller, and the headset.

So, Oculus is $600 plus a capable PC. What are the chances of PSVR being cheaper?

It will be cheaper, but not by much.

So does this thing require 2 OR 3 USB 3.0 ports? I thought originally it was 2 USB 3.0 and 1 USB 2.0. But even the FAQ is stating 3x USB 3.0 ports and 1 USB 2.0 port.

I only have 2 USB 3.0 ports on this motherboard. Very confused why it says I don't have USB 3.0 ports in the compat tool unless I don't have enough of them.

Oh OK man thanks for the reply. Maybe new graphics card this year and VR next. Will give me a chance to see how it all goes as well.

Just would love to give us the a go as it looks awesome!

Imagine night. Then imagine day.

Why haven't any impressions reflected this?

People have been just as blown away by recent hands-on impressions of PSVR compared to how excited they have been after using the latest Oculus headsets.
The things that matter, the latency and feelings of 'presence', are all there. The image fidelity is not what's going to make or break a VR experience.

PSVR is a very good tech attempt by Sony, but no matter how cheap they make it, it simply doesnt interest me. I would not consider gaming with Oculus @ 90fps with a Nvidia 750ti, even less with a subpar PS4 performance. Oculus dev kits also has shown that the community for VR is really great, games got unofficial VR support, the mod/dev community is something that wont exist on PS4 so you're stuck with what Sony is feeding you.

But again, if the game or games aren't there to justify the purchase why would anyone invest $600 on the occulus?

Elite Dangerous?

I'm not saying Sony's vr solution is going to be better. I'm definitely saying it's going to be "cheaper". $200 cheaper.

People shouldn't deride those willing to pay for this first release. Without those guys the whole thing falls on its arse and VR won't reach a stage where it's affordable for the masses.

Don't get me wrong. I want vr to succeed at any price.

For a community that can be unsatisfied with a game running 1080p 60fps, i can understand the thinking on price for pc enthusists.

It's just not "consumer" priced.

Hell, $399 ain't consumer priced either...but i bet that price will be more "manegeable" for potential vr consumers.

I got my order in at 11:06 Eastern, said March delivery, but my order page doesn't show a date. Assume it will be delivered in the time frame listed immediately upon check-out, I guess.

They made it seem like launch stock was plentiful

I think they have had a core group supporting the project, but this thing has gotten a lot of coverage many tech products don't get since their original concept, so over a million preorders doesn't seem out of the question.

Rift was never going to make VR main stream so i don't know how anyone could have expect that in the first place .
None of the current companies going to do that .

Piece of gaming tech priced at $599? I...I feel like I experienced this before.

Well, at least I know not to adopt early technology with a first gen launch, casual users should just hold out until a new model and inevitable price drop, or look to competitors for better pricing.

To be fair, $1499 is just the same price for a high end computer but here you just replace the price of the monitor for the oculus.

That's true, and besides, an upper midrange gaming PC (which is where a GTX 970 is, it's not high-end) combined with Oculus Rift CV1 is going to provide a fantastic experience, although a pretty damn expensive one.
