Marc Laidlaw has left Valve

This is what's wrong with Valve, as it currently stands they are nothing more than Steam with a few divisions that update existing software. The entire reason I started PC gaming was to play Valve games but the honeymoon period ended pretty soon. Valve are not the face of PC gaming, they have a platform that hosts everything but they'll never be the Nintendo, Sony or even Microsoft of the PC industry.

You entered PC gaming just to play first-person shooters (albeit excellent at that) exclusively?

People said the same for Shenmue 3 and yet...

...crowd-funding happened. Valve more than likely has the budget for HL3.
As far as we could tell, a varying margin of staff worked on the game but it was never beyond experimentation. I imagine if TF2 and Portal weren't as much of a raging success as they became, it may have spurred HL2: Episode 3's production further.

Got anything to back that up or are you just mad at HL3 not releasing ?

Steam client is a bloated disaster, Greenlight's a punchline of a service, SteamOS/Steam Machines/Steam Controllers are all basically DOA, Steam sales are a shadow of their former selves, the winter ARG was a waste of everyone's time, TF2 is made more by the community than by Valve at this point, the 75% cut they take selling user-created content for their games is an absolute ripoff, every new service or feature they roll out is half-baked at best, they haven't made a single player game in four years with no signs of that changing any time soon, and they keep making mistake after mistake without ever learning because all their failures are subsidized by the endless cash flow that is the Steam store. I also don't give a fuck about Dota or CS:GO, which I fully realize is Just My Opinion, Man, but the fact that all Valve makes now seems to be microtransaction-funded multiplayer stuff makes them all the less appealing to me, especially after watching how their business model shift kinda fucked one of my favorite games of all time (TF2). I'd almost call them the Nexon of the west but at least Nexon is prolific.

on point.

i don't begrudge them exactly; i've just moved on.

although the steam client being kind of pretty shittily designed shits me to no end

I don't think Valve are not working hard on games, it's just that they seem to be working on a few games for the sole reason of micro transactions and herding the community sheep down another item drop, social experiment path. It' so dull and manipulative. Here is the carrot, now dance!

Who knows, maybe they are saving the HL3 trump card for VR and they can work on whatever they like, talented or not but we can still view our displeasure.

I'll curse the day that DOTA became such a moneymaker for them, making them complacent and removing their "need" to make new games.

Oh sorry I take this all back now that they're making CS:GO gloves look nicer, that fixes everything

Yeah, we need to start moving on from Half-Life 3. It's not happening. Probably the same for a traditional Portal game.

Half-Life 2 and Portal/Portal 2 are some of my favourite games of all time but Valve is a different company now focused on other types of games and services. It is how it is.

Valve kinda sucks at services though. Steam client is sluggish and their support is the worst in the business :lol.

Valve now are precisely the company Crytek wanted to become when they were talking of services rather than products.

The Valve now would never have released Half Life 2

This whole thing literally comes down to "Valve don't make the games I like, so fuck them".
No, it comes down to "Valve no longer releases anything substantial and is instead focused on games as a service and community created content"

It's not like they're churning out awesome new MP only games or anything... They don't release anything substantial anymore and their entire current "active development" catalogue consists of games as a service.

If people want to blame a game for Valve's shift to GaaS it should be TF2, not Dota. That's where it all started. Specifically around Mannconomy.

really wish they would stop resting on their laurels and just make another video game

I don't even care what it is anymore, just do something, anything that shows you guys are still interested in making something other than money

"Man, I'm a big pachinko fan so I just don't understand why people want Konami to make video games. They still make great stuff, just not the stuff these other people want them to make."

its irrelevant if Steam is a monopoly, all that matters is userbase and all that cash flowing straight to Valve

The poster you replied to first never made a point they weren't making money on steam, just that their services isn't very great in some aspects.

yes, I agree with that. The Steam client is a bloated mess to me and using it isn't the best experience on my (admittedly not new) macbook.

Well exactly, I was just saying that they aren't going to change their "shit" services anytime soon because 11 million people log in every day. I said "and?" because saying Steam is a monopoly doesn't really mean anything in terms of what I was talking about. From my perspective anyway. Probably didn't come across that well

Half Life 2 was a different time when there was actual pressure on Valve to deliver from a financial standpoint. Now that they're raking in the billions from Steam the pressure isn't there anymore.

Right, I get what you're saying now. Your initial post just came off as defensive and as an 'argument' against the criticism for Steam.

Steam being a monopoly means a lot because what are those 11 million people going to flock to for a better digital games service? They just have to deal with Steam for now.

Whats not to say that HL3's story has not already been finalized and wrapped up?
Maybe it will be his magnum opus.
Can't go out on a bigger bang than that!

Didn't realise Dota 2, CS:GO and TF2 were basically pachinko, not video games.

Right. Obviously someone else would handle dialog and the particulars, but there's no reason to think that the broad strokes of the Half-Life story weren't worked out a decade ago.

It sucks to see Marc go but this doesn't really mean anything to me in regards to the future of Half-Life.
